How to Play Original PS1 Games on Modern Hardware

A documented PS3 model may play some original PS1 discs, but the exact model and game matter. PS4 and PS5 require an official digital release, while PlayStation Classic only runs its 20 built-in games.

If you want to use your original PS1 disc, a compatible PlayStation 3 is the documented PlayStation-hardware option in this guide. Sony’s manual for PS3 model CECH-2501A says it can play PlayStation-format software, but also warns that not every title is guaranteed to work. A PS4 or PS5 is not a general PS1-disc player; on those consoles, look for an official digital release of the specific game instead.

The important distinction is whether you want to play the disc you own or simply play the same game. Those are different routes, with different compatibility checks, costs and limitations. The right answer depends on your exact game, console model, region and display.

Start with the key distinction: original disc or same game?

Many people asking how to play an old PlayStation game on a modern television are really asking two different questions. The first is, “Can I put my original PS1 disc into hardware I already own?” The second is, “Can I play that game today, even if I need a digital copy?” Those questions do not have the same answer.

An original-disc solution must accept the physical PlayStation-format disc and run that particular title. A digital solution does not read your disc at all. It depends on whether Sony currently offers that game in your region, and whether access is included with a plan or requires a separate purchase. Treating a digital listing as a license attached automatically to your old disc can lead to an unpleasant surprise.

Mcbazel PS2 to HDMI Adapter for PlayStation 2 & 1, HDMI Converter Supports 4:3/16:9 Aspect Ratio Switch, 480p/720p Output, Plug & Play, Compatible with PS1/PS2 Phat & Slim
  • WORKS WITH PS2 & PS1 — PHAT AND SLIM — Connect your PS2 (both original Phat and Slim models) or PS1 directly to any modern HDTV, monitor, or projector via HDMI. No drivers required. Just plug in and play your classic game library on your modern display within minutes.
  • WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PICTURE — This adapter converts your PS2/PS1's analog AV signal to HDMI so it works on modern TVs. The PS2 hardware outputs a standard-definition signal (480p max) — the adapter upscales this to 720p for a cleaner look, but cannot go beyond the console's own limits. Great for retro gaming; not a 4K upgrade.
  • 4:3 / 16:9 ASPECT RATIO SWITCH — One button to toggle between classic 4:3 and widescreen 16:9 display. Supports 480p and 720p resolution output. Low-latency signal processing for responsive, lag-free gameplay — ideal for action and rhythm games where timing matters.
  • POWER REQUIRED — PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING — This adapter requires an external DC 5V/1A USB power source to operate. A USB cable is included; a USB power adapter is NOT included. Use any standard phone charger or plug into your TV's USB port. No power = no signal output.
  • IMPORTANT — PS2 AND PS1 ONLY — Works exclusively via the PS2/PS1 AV output port. Does NOT support PS3, PS4, or PS5. Does NOT work with HDMI capture cards, splitters, or passthrough devices — connect directly from console to TV. Not compatible with BlackMagic brand displays.

Use the comparison below before buying another console, subscribing to a service or troubleshooting a disc that may simply be incompatible.

Route Uses your original PS1 disc? What to verify Connection and access Best fit
Compatible PS3 model, such as CECH-2501A Yes, for PlayStation-format software on the documented model; compatibility is not guaranteed for every title. The exact PS3 model and the particular game. Connect the PS3 using a video connection supported by both the console and television. No subscription is implied by the disc route, but hardware condition and purchase price vary. You want to try your existing disc on PlayStation hardware.
Official PS4 or PS5 digital release No. You need the game’s digital version. Whether the exact title is currently offered in your region, and whether it requires a subscription or separate purchase. Use the current PlayStation Store or Classics Catalog listing. Access terms and price are title-, region- and plan-dependent. You want to play on a current console and are comfortable using a digital copy.
PlayStation Classic No. It has no disc drive. Whether the game is one of its 20 built-in titles. HDMI output; no official way to purchase or add more games. Your game is included and you want the Classic’s simple mini-console.

These options are not interchangeable. In particular, PS5 support for supported PS4 games does not mean that a PS5 can play PS1 discs. Sony’s PS5 materials describe PS4 and PS5 game support, while Sony’s PS5 safety guide excludes PlayStation-format software from playable discs.

Play an original disc on a compatible PS3

Sony’s manual for the CECH-2501A PS3 model says that PlayStation-format software can be played on that console. The manual also says, “Operation of all PlayStation® format software titles is not guaranteed.” That qualification is essential. The documented capability does not establish that every PS1 game works, and it does not establish that every PS3 model has the same capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PS3 route is therefore a carefully qualified option, not a universal backward-compatibility promise. If preserving the experience of using your own disc matters most, begin by confirming the hardware model and then investigate the specific game. Do not buy a random used PS3 solely because it carries the PlayStation name.

Check the console and game before you set up

  1. Identify the PS3 model. Read the model number on the console’s label and compare it with the model covered by the documentation you are using. CECH-2501A is a documented example, not a promise about all PS3 systems. Similar-looking consoles can have different capabilities.
  2. Check the exact game. Do not assume that a general statement about PlayStation-format software guarantees your particular title. Confirm compatibility for the specific game and console combination if reliable title-specific information is available. A statement that one title runs does not prove that another does.
  3. Confirm the disc format and condition. Make sure you are testing an actual PlayStation-format game disc, not a soundtrack CD, a video disc or a damaged copy. Inspect for visible dirt, cracks or deep scratches. Never use a cracked disc.
  4. Check what display connection you can use. Connect the PS3 using a video connection supported by both the console and your television. The cited manual establishes PlayStation-format software support for its model; it does not establish that every modern TV setup will work without checking the available connections.
  5. Power on the console and insert the disc. Wait to see whether the disc appears in the PS3’s game interface. If it appears, select it to try launching the game. If it does not appear or fails to start, record exactly what happens rather than assuming the entire PS3 route is impossible.
  6. Test methodically. If you have another known-good PS1 disc, try it. A second disc can help distinguish a title-specific compatibility issue from a dirty disc or a failing drive, although one successful test still does not create a universal compatibility guarantee.

What the model warning means in practice

“Operation of all PlayStation® format software titles is not guaranteed” is not a minor footnote. It means the manual’s statement should be read as a supported possibility for that model, with exceptions possible at the title level. It does not provide a percentage of games that work, a complete compatibility list or a promise that a disc will behave exactly as it did on an original PlayStation.

That also means a failed launch has several possible explanations. The title may not be compatible, the disc may be damaged, the PS3’s drive may be unreliable, or the particular display connection may need attention. A single failure cannot identify which explanation is correct.

If the disc does not start

  • Recheck the printed model number. A similar-looking PS3 is not enough to establish that its compatibility matches CECH-2501A’s documented capability.
  • Inspect and gently clean the disc using appropriate disc-care practices. Do not use a cracked disc, and do not keep forcing a disc that the drive cannot read.
  • Try another PS1 disc known to be in good condition, if one is available. If no disc is recognized, hardware or connection issues become more plausible; if another game works, the original title may be the limiting factor.
  • Look for information specific to the game and the PS3 model. The manual’s warning means that a general compatibility claim cannot settle every title-level case.
  • Check the television input and cable path. The documentation cited here does not guarantee that every modern display accepts every signal from every older console setup.
  • Do not conclude that a PS5, PS4 or PlayStation Classic is a replacement disc player simply because the PS3 attempt failed. Each route has separate limitations.

The evidence does not provide a universal PS3 compatibility list or a percentage of PS1 titles that work. Treat the PS3 route as model- and game-dependent, not as a guaranteed substitute for an original PS1.

How to choose a used PS3 for this purpose

If you do not already own a PS3, the model number should be the first filter when comparing listings. A seller’s description such as “backward compatible” is not enough by itself. Ask for a clear model number and compare it with the Sony documentation you intend to rely on. Keep the compatibility warning close to any purchase decision: even a documented model is not guaranteed to run every PlayStation-format title.

Also assess the condition of the physical console. A compatible model with a failing optical drive may be less useful than a different unit in good condition, while a clean-looking exterior cannot prove that the drive reads your game. Test the exact disc when possible. If you are buying sight unseen, treat the ability to return the unit as important, because title-specific operation is not guaranteed.

There is no single official price that applies to every used PS3 or every game. Listings vary by model, condition, accessories and region. Compare the total cost of the console, a suitable video cable if needed, shipping and any return protection with the cost of an official digital release. The lower purchase price is not automatically the lower-risk route if your particular title does not work.

Play a PS1 game on PS4 or PS5 without its disc

Putting a PS1 disc into a PS4 or PS5 is not the way to play it. Sony’s PS5 safety guide explicitly excludes PlayStation-format software from playable discs, and Sony’s PS4/PS5 media support page lists CD among unsupported disc formats. Do not infer PS1 disc support from the fact that a PS5 can play supported PS4 games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In other words, a PS5’s ability to run supported PS4 games on disc or digitally is a separate feature. It should not be expanded into a claim that the console reads original PlayStation discs. If your goal is to keep using the physical copy, look at the qualified PS3 route instead.

If you want to use a current PlayStation console, look for an official digital version of the exact game. Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide describes original PlayStation games in the Classics Catalog. Catalog availability can vary over time and by plan, so a title’s presence should be checked in your region at the time you want to play. A catalog listing is not a permanent guarantee that the game will remain available.

Check the digital option before subscribing or buying

  1. Search for the exact title. Use the PlayStation Store or the current Classics Catalog listing for your region. Watch for similarly named sequels, remasters or regional versions.
  2. Open the game’s own listing. Confirm that it is the correct release. Read the page for the access method rather than relying on a search result or an old article.
  3. Check plan and purchase terms. The guide identifies Classics Catalog games and says availability varies by time and plan. A particular game may require a qualifying plan, a separate purchase or another condition stated on its listing.
  4. Check the current price if payment is required. Prices and plan terms are not universal, so use the live listing for your region instead of assuming that a price from another country or an older promotion still applies.
  5. Confirm availability immediately before choosing the route. Catalogs can change. Do not assume that another region’s catalog or an older listing reflects what you can access now.
  6. Verify the console account and region you will use. A listing visible in one region does not establish that the same title is offered to your account.

A digital version is a separate release, not playback of your original disc. Owning the disc alone should not be treated as proof that you have access to a digital copy, and buying a digital copy should not be described as making the physical disc compatible with a PS4 or PS5.

What the PlayStation Classic can—and cannot—do

The PlayStation Classic is a small, HDMI-connected console with 20 preloaded games. It cannot read PS1 discs, and Sony says there is no way to purchase additional games for it. It is therefore an option only if the game you want is among its built-in titles; it is not a way to use or expand a PS1 disc collection.

Sony’s 2018 PlayStation Classic FAQ gives its dimensions as 5.8 × 1.3 × 4.1 inches and describes it as 45% smaller than the original PlayStation. Sony says it outputs at 720p or 480p, with additional upscaling potentially performed by the display depending on the display model. The FAQ also lists virtual memory-card slots and a restore-point feature.

Those specifications explain why the Classic can be convenient on a modern television, but they do not make it a general-purpose PS1 player. HDMI output tells you how the Classic connects; it does not mean that the console accepts your own game discs. The fixed library is the deciding factor.

Some of the included games are based on PAL versions. Check the official included-game list and the relevant game details rather than assuming every entry is the same release you owned. Regional version differences can matter for language, content, timing or other behavior, so “the title is included” and “it is the exact edition I remember” are not automatically identical claims.

The Classic’s 20-game limit is also a practical requirement. If your game is absent, there is no official purchase path that turns the unit into an expandable library. Choose it for the included collection and its simple HDMI setup, not as a backup plan for an arbitrary disc.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Display and connection checks

Modern televisions vary in the inputs and signal handling they accept. For a PS3, verify which video connection the console provides and which input your display supports before buying cables or assuming the screen is at fault. The Sony documentation cited for the PS3 establishes software support for the named model; it does not promise universal compatibility with every modern display.

The PlayStation Classic has HDMI output, and Sony specifies 720p or 480p output. Sony also notes that the display may perform additional upscaling depending on the display model. Consequently, two televisions can present the same Classic output differently, even though the console itself is operating within its stated modes.

Keep the troubleshooting order simple: select the correct television input, confirm the cable is seated, verify that the console powers on, and then test the game. Do not use a display problem as evidence that the title is incompatible, or a disc-recognition problem as evidence that every PS1 game fails on that console.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming all PS3 models are equivalent. The CECH-2501A manual is model-specific. Always read the actual model number.
  • Assuming one successful game proves every game works. Sony explicitly warns that operation of all PlayStation-format titles is not guaranteed.
  • Putting a PS1 disc in a PS5 because PS4 discs work. PS5 backward compatibility for supported PS4 games is not general PS1-disc support.
  • Confusing a CD with a supported game disc. Sony’s PS4/PS5 media page lists CD among unsupported formats, and the PS5 safety guide excludes PlayStation-format software from playable discs.
  • Buying a PlayStation Classic for an unlisted game. It has 20 built-in games, no disc drive and no official way to add purchases.
  • Assuming a digital catalog listing is permanent. Availability varies by time, region and plan.
  • Assuming the disc grants digital access. A digital release is a separate option with its own listing and terms.
  • Ignoring regional editions. Some Classic entries are based on PAL versions, so check the specific included release.
  • Trusting an old price or subscription description. Check the current listing for your region before spending money.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Write down the exact game title and edition. Include the region if it is printed on the case or disc.
  2. Decide whether the original disc is essential. If yes, focus on a documented, compatible PS3 model and title-specific verification. If no, compare the current digital listing with the fixed PlayStation Classic library.
  3. Check the hardware model before purchasing. For a PS3, do not rely on the family name or a seller’s generic “backward compatible” wording.
  4. Check the disc’s physical condition. A cracked or deeply damaged disc should not be used as a compatibility test.
  5. Check your display connection. Confirm that the television has an input compatible with the console and that you understand the Classic’s 720p/480p output behavior if choosing that unit.
  6. Check region, plan and price for digital access. Use the live store or Classics Catalog listing, not an old screenshot or another region’s page.
  7. Keep expectations qualified. No route described here guarantees identical behavior across every game, console and display.

Do not assume that. The documentation cited here is for CECH-2501A, and the warning about unguaranteed operation applies even there. A model-specific and title-specific check is required.

Can I play old PlayStation games on PS4?

Not from your original PS1 disc. Look for the exact game in the official digital offering available to your region. Check whether access requires a plan or a separate purchase.

Is the PlayStation Classic a PS1 disc player?

No. It has no disc drive. It runs 20 preloaded games and Sony says there is no way to purchase additional games for it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many games are included with PlayStation Classic?

Twenty games are preloaded. Check the official list to see whether your title is included, and check the release details because some entries are based on PAL versions.

Does PlayStation Classic connect to a modern TV?

It uses HDMI output. Sony specifies 720p or 480p output and notes that a display may perform additional upscaling depending on the display model.

Bottom line

If you need to use the original disc, start with a documented PS3 model such as CECH-2501A and verify the particular game; Sony does not guarantee every PlayStation-format title. A PS4 or PS5 is not a general PS1-disc solution, but either may be suitable when the exact game has a current official digital release in your region. The PlayStation Classic is the simplest HDMI option only when your game is one of its 20 built-in titles. Check the model, title, region, display connection and access terms before you spend money.
