Download the emulator from its official project site, open a game file you are legally entitled to use, configure the two-screen display and controls, and save progress inside the game. The main setup difference is BIOS and firmware: melonDS needs files dumped from an original DS or DS Lite for firmware boot, while DeSmuME documents internal BIOS and firmware for basic game loading.
How do I play DS games on my PC?
Use a Nintendo DS emulator, which is software designed to run software made for another device. DeSmuME and melonDS are documented options; melonDS specifically targets DS and DSi emulation. Their official project pages are the safest places to check current builds and supported operating systems. For melonDS, use its official downloads page rather than an old third-party download mirror.

- Choose and download an emulator. Get DeSmuME from its official project site or melonDS from its official downloads page. Check the project page for the current build and operating-system support.
- Check whether your chosen boot mode needs system files. melonDS firmware boot requires BIOS and firmware files dumped from an original Nintendo DS or DS Lite. DeSmuME documents built-in BIOS and firmware for loading and running games; external images are used for a fuller original-system boot and additional behavior. See DeSmuME’s documentation and the melonDS project repository for the relevant project details.
- Open your game file. Start the emulator and use its game-opening workflow to select a game file. DeSmuME’s Windows manual describes loading a ROM, but that manual is old, so menu labels may differ in current builds. Consult the documentation for the version you downloaded rather than assuming an older screenshot matches your interface.
- Arrange the screens and controls. The DS uses two screens and touch input. Choose a display arrangement and map controls that make sense for your game using the options in your emulator version. Exact menu paths and the way individual games use touch input vary; the available project documentation does not establish one current layout or control mapping that fits every title.
- Save your progress. Use the game’s own save function. DeSmuME also documents save states, which capture an emulator session so you can resume from that point. A save state is separate from the game’s ordinary save system, so use normal in-game saves as well.
Which DS emulator should I use?
The clearest documented difference is how each handles system files and booting. The sources cited here do not provide a controlled, current comparison of compatibility or speed, so they do not establish that one emulator is universally better.
| Emulator | System files and boot setup | Where to check current downloads |
|---|---|---|
| melonDS | For firmware boot, requires BIOS and firmware dumps from an original DS or DS Lite. See the melonDS project repository. | melonDS downloads page |
| DeSmuME | Its documentation says built-in BIOS and firmware can load and execute games; external images provide additional original-system behavior and a fuller DS boot. See the DeSmuME documentation. | DeSmuME project site |
Choose based on the setup you want and the current platform support listed by the project. Do not treat an emulator’s ability to open a game file as proof that any particular download source for that file is authorized.

Do I need BIOS files for melonDS or DeSmuME?
It depends on the emulator and boot mode. For melonDS firmware boot, the project requires BIOS and firmware files dumped from an original DS or DS Lite. DeSmuME’s documentation describes internal BIOS and firmware that can load and execute games, with external images enabling more of the original boot behavior and additional features. Follow the documentation for the emulator version and mode you choose; these sources do not establish a universal system-file requirement for every setup.

Nintendo’s US support FAQ says games offered through peer-to-peer networks or links to third-party file-hosting services are unauthorized copies. Nintendo of America Support states: “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” The same FAQ says Nintendo does not currently offer or authorize a product for playing or downloading its game files on personal computers. Nintendo UK separately describes its position on emulator software, unauthorized copies, and circumvention in its legal information. These are Nintendo’s statements, not a complete legal analysis of every emulator, personal backup method, or jurisdiction. Owning a cartridge does not by itself settle whether copying or circumvention is lawful where you live; check the applicable local rules. This guide does not direct you to ROM download sites.
