Java Edition and Bedrock Edition do not connect directly to each other’s standard multiplayer servers. To let Bedrock players join a Java server, the server owner can install Geyser, which translates Bedrock connections for that Java server. Bedrock players then connect to the server’s Geyser address and UDP port.
Can Java and Bedrock play together?
Not directly on ordinary multiplayer servers. Minecraft says the two editions use different servers, so Java and Bedrock players cannot simply join the same Java or Bedrock world. Minecraft’s edition guidance also makes clear that Realms are edition-specific: a Java Realm and a Bedrock Realm or Realms Plus world are not interchangeable.

The documented cross-play route is a Java server running Geyser. Geyser is server software that lets Bedrock clients connect to a Java server; it is not a setting a player turns on in Minecraft and is not a Realm option.

- A Java server that accepts a client version supported by the current Geyser release.
- Geyser installed on that server, or a separately run Geyser proxy connected to it.
- A Bedrock listener reachable from the internet or local network, using a UDP port permitted by the host.
- Players with the right game edition, account permissions, internet connection, and any required console online subscription.
Decide first who will administer the server. If you rent or use a managed host, check whether its server software supports Geyser and whether it allows an incoming UDP listener. If you self-host, you will need to configure the listener and make its port reachable through your network and firewall.

How to add Geyser to a Java server
Geyser documents two broad approaches: install it within a compatible Java server deployment, or run it as a standalone/proxy service that connects to the Java server. The exact installation package and steps depend on the server software and host, so follow the matching instructions in Geyser’s setup guide.
- Check version compatibility. Compare the Java server version with Geyser’s current supported-version information. As checked on October 3, 2026, Geyser listed Bedrock 26.30–26.51 and Java 26.2 support, and said it emulates a Java 26.2 client. The Java server must accept that client version. These values change as Minecraft updates; verify the live Geyser supported versions page before installation. Older Java servers may need compatibility software such as ViaVersion, depending on the server version and deployment.
- Install Geyser in the appropriate place. Use the instructions for your server software if installing it as a server component, or configure the standalone/proxy setup to reach the Java server. Installation and updates are the server owner’s responsibility unless a hosting provider manages them.
- Configure the Bedrock listener. Geyser’s documented defaults are address
0.0.0.0and port19132. Use the host’s required port if it assigns one. Bedrock uses UDP, so the configured port must accept UDP traffic; opening only a TCP port is not sufficient. - Make the listener reachable. Permit the chosen UDP port in the host firewall and any applicable network firewall or port-forwarding rules. Ask the host whether the port is exposed to outside players, and do not assume the Java server’s address or port is automatically the Bedrock listener.
- Test the connection. Geyser documents the server-side command
geyser connectiontest <ip> <port>. Run it with the target address and configured Bedrock port to diagnose reachability before inviting players. - Give Bedrock players the connection details. Share the server address and the Geyser Bedrock port. Players must use the Bedrock multiplayer server-adding or joining flow and enter the listener’s details, rather than trying to join a Java Realm.
How Bedrock players connect
On a supported Bedrock device, add or join a multiplayer server using the address of the machine or host running Geyser and the configured Bedrock port. Use the port assigned by the host if it differs from Geyser’s default of 19132. If the server is reachable only on a local network, players outside that network will not be able to join until the owner makes the listener externally reachable.

- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Console access to arbitrary third-party servers has platform-specific considerations. The available official guidance does not establish one universal procedure for Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, so check current instructions for the specific console, operating system, and Minecraft version rather than assuming the same server-entry steps work everywhere.
Accounts, permissions, and console subscriptions
Geyser does not remove Minecraft’s normal multiplayer requirements. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements page says players need the matching edition for the game type, the latest Minecraft release, and a stable internet or LAN connection. Console and mobile players need to sign in with a Microsoft account; child accounts need multiplayer permissions enabled.

- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Minecraft states that console online multiplayer requires Xbox Game Pass Core on Xbox, PlayStation Plus on PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch Online on Switch. These platform requirements are separate from installing or configuring Geyser. If the group is using a Realm instead of a Geyser-connected server, players also need an invitation from the Realm host, and the Realm must match their edition.
Java account authentication and Floodgate
Geyser’s documentation describes Floodgate as an option for allowing Bedrock users to join without owning a paid Java Edition account. It is an authentication and server-setup choice for the owner, not a requirement for every Geyser installation. Follow Geyser’s setup documentation for the supported configuration and its implications for the server’s authentication choices.

What carries over—and what does not
Geyser can work with server-side mods, but its setup guidance says mods that require installation on each player’s client do not work through this arrangement. Do not assume that a Java modpack, client-side mod, or every Java-specific feature will be available unchanged to Bedrock players. Confirm compatibility for the server software and features you intend to use before building the world around them.
Which Geyser setup should you choose?
| Approach | Who manages installation and updates | What to verify | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Install Geyser within an existing Java server | The server owner or hosting provider, depending on the service | Compatible server software, permission to install the component, and an externally reachable UDP listener | Owners who already operate a compatible Java server and want the bridge alongside it |
| Run Geyser as a standalone/proxy setup | The person administering the proxy and Java server | Proxy-to-server connectivity, listener reachability, port rules, and version compatibility | Owners who prefer a separate bridge service or whose deployment calls for a proxy |
Both approaches depend on a working Java server and a reachable Bedrock UDP listener. A host that does not permit the required listener may not support this arrangement without a different hosting or network setup.

Troubleshoot common connection problems
- Bedrock cannot find or join the server: Confirm the address and Bedrock port are correct, UDP is allowed, and the port is reachable from the player’s network. The Java server port alone may not be the Geyser listener port.
- The connection test fails: Check the listener address and port in Geyser’s configuration, then verify host-level port allocation, firewall rules, and network forwarding. Ask a managed host to confirm that the assigned UDP port is exposed.
- Players see a version or protocol error: Check Geyser’s live supported-version page and confirm that the Java server accepts the Java client version Geyser emulates. Older server versions may require a compatible version bridge, but the correct choice depends on the installation.
- A modded feature is missing for Bedrock players: Determine whether the feature is server-side or requires a client-side Java mod. Geyser’s documented setup does not make client-installed Java mods work on Bedrock.
- A console player cannot use the connection flow: Verify the console’s online subscription, Microsoft account sign-in, and multiplayer permissions, then consult current instructions specific to that console and game version. The procedure for third-party servers is not universal across consoles.
