To play an M3U8 file, open it in a media player that supports HLS—VLC is a practical option for desktop and Android—or use a compatible browser or native player for a stream URL. An M3U8 is a playlist or stream index, not necessarily a video file: it may point to separate media segments, so the playlist and everything it references must be accessible.
What an M3U8 file contains
M3U8 is a playlist format commonly used by HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). A playlist can identify a stream, list different variants, or point to media segments such as .ts files. HLS supports live and on-demand audio and video, and can adapt delivery to network conditions. Apple describes HLS as a system that “dynamically adapts to network conditions by optimizing playback for the available speed of wired and wireless connections.” Apple Developer: HTTP Live Streaming (HLS)

The file extension alone does not tell you that the media is self-contained or playable. Apple’s authoring guidance identifies .m3u8 as the HLS playlist extension and recommends the MIME type application/vnd.apple.mpegurl for playlists. Apple’s HLS authoring specification
Choose the right way to open it
- Local file: You have an .m3u8 file saved on your device. Open that file in a compatible player; any separately referenced media files may also need to be present and reachable.
- Network URL: You have a web address ending in .m3u8. Open the URL in a player or browser that supports that HLS stream. The URL may depend on network access, authorization, or other delivery conditions.
Play an M3U8 file with VLC
On Windows, macOS, or Linux
- Install VLC from VideoLAN’s official download page, which provides downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- For a local playlist, use VLC’s open-file option and select the .m3u8 file. For a network playlist, use its open-network-stream option and enter the stream URL. Menu names and locations can vary by operating system and VLC release.
- Start playback. If it fails, check the playlist and the resources it references before assuming the file needs conversion.
On Android
- Install VLC for Android from VideoLAN’s official Android page.
- Open the authorized network stream URL in the app, or open the local .m3u8 file if Android and the app have access to it.
- If playback does not start, check that the stream is still available and that the playlist’s referenced media can be reached.
VideoLAN lists network-stream support, including HLS, for VLC for Android. The exact file-access steps can depend on Android and app versions.

Play an M3U8 stream in a browser or Apple device
Apple documents HLS delivery in a webpage using an HTML <video> element whose source is an M3U8 URL. That is a route for a webpage developer or a site that has implemented HLS playback; it does not mean that pasting every M3U8 URL into every browser will work. Browser support can depend on the browser, device, codecs, stream setup, and any access restrictions. Apple’s example and deployment guidance are at Deploying a Basic HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) Stream.
Why an M3U8 link may not play
- Confirm what you have. A local playlist file and a network URL require different opening steps. Make sure you are opening the actual file or the complete URL in a player that supports the intended use.
- Check playlist and segment access. HLS playback relies on the playlist and the media resources it references. A playlist may load while one or more segments are unavailable, which can still prevent playback.
- Check local file relationships. If you received a local playlist separately from its media files, its relative references may no longer point to the right locations. Keep the referenced files together in the expected folder structure or restore their original paths.
- Check player and format compatibility. Try a player that supports HLS and the stream’s media formats. Apple’s authoring guidance covers playlist and segment formats, but an .m3u8 extension does not guarantee that every player can decode the referenced media.
- Check access and availability. A login requirement, expired link, authorization rule, or unavailable source is an access problem. Switching players does not grant permission or restore a stream that is no longer available.

Do you need to convert the M3U8?
Usually not just to watch it: start with a compatible player. Renaming .m3u8 to .mp4 does not convert the stream or combine its media segments. If you need to inspect, create, or process HLS media, FFmpeg documents an HLS muxer that creates playlists and segments. That is a technical media workflow, not a prerequisite for ordinary playback.
