You can translate Japanese Android games with Google Translate when the game lets you copy text, Google Lens for text inside screenshots, or an OCR overlay for recurring on-screen text. These tools help you understand menus and dialogue; they do not change a game’s language or guarantee a polished translation. First check whether the game is available to your Google Play account, since store access and translation are separate issues.
Check whether you can install the game
Search the exact title in Google Play while signed in to the account you plan to use. A game’s listing and availability can vary by Play country, which is an account and store setting; a translation app cannot make an unavailable listing appear. Check Google’s guidance on changing your Google Play country and the game’s current listing before troubleshooting installation.

Availability can also depend on the specific title and account. Do not assume that switching countries, using a VPN, or installing an APK will resolve access, payment, account, or device-compatibility issues.

| Method | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Google Translate Tap to Translate | Text the game allows you to select and copy | Does not translate text embedded as pixels in an image |
| Google Lens | A screenshot or image containing dialogue, labels, or menu text | Usually requires pausing or leaving the game to inspect the image |
| OCR translation overlay | Repeated translation of game screens during play | Requires reviewing permissions and may struggle with stylized or changing text |
Use Google Translate for selectable text
- Open Google Translate and enable Tap to Translate in its settings.
- In the game, select and copy a Japanese text string using Android’s normal text-selection controls.
- Tap the Translate bubble that appears and read the English translation.
Google’s Translate text in other apps instructions state: “Tap to Translate works with text, not with images.” This option is useful only when the game exposes text for copying; many games render dialogue and menus as part of the screen rather than selectable text.

Use Google Lens for text in a screenshot
- Capture a screenshot of the Japanese menu or dialogue.
- Open the screenshot in Google Lens.
- Select the text or the part of the image you want to translate, choose Translate, and set Japanese as the input language and English as the output language if needed.
Lens can translate text selected from an image, including a selected region rather than only the entire screenshot. A clear, unobstructed screenshot gives text recognition a better chance. This is a straightforward choice for a one-off line, but it interrupts play while you inspect the image. See Google Lens translation guidance.
Use an OCR overlay for repeated translation
An overlay can read text from the screen and display a translation without requiring you to copy each line or open a screenshot. The available modes and permission requirements vary by app, so check the current Play listing and the app’s own disclosures before enabling access.
Screen Translate
The Screen Translate Google Play listing describes full-screen, selected-region, automatic, and subtitle modes, as well as on-device OCR recognition for Japanese. Its listing says the app uses Android Accessibility Service to read on-screen text for translation, and that text is sent to the selected translation engine or remains on-device when on-device OCR is used. These are developer-provided disclosures, not an independent audit of data handling.

The Gaminik Google Play listing includes Japanese among its supported source languages. It says the default Universal Translation Mode does not use Accessibility Service, while Chat Translation Mode does. Check the mode you intend to use and its permissions rather than assuming that every feature handles screen content the same way.

PlayTranslate
The PlayTranslate public repository describes live or instant translation with overlay or notification output. It also notes that custom fonts or graphics may prevent support for some games and that internet access can affect translation quality. Its page contains mixed setup directions, so use current release documentation and review permissions before installing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose an approach and set expectations
- Text access: Use Tap to Translate only if the game lets you select and copy the text. For text baked into the screen, use Lens or an OCR overlay.
- How often you need translation: Lens suits occasional lines; an overlay may be more convenient for recurring dialogue and menus.
- Japanese recognition and processing: Check whether an app supports Japanese OCR and whether recognition happens on-device or uses a selected online service.
- Permissions and privacy: Review why the app requests accessibility or overlay access and what its listing says about sending or processing captured text.
- Screen design: Stylized fonts, visual effects, dense menus, animation, and rapidly changing text can make OCR harder.
The cited feature descriptions do not establish which option is most accurate, and machine OCR and translation are not a substitute for official localization. If a line matters, verify it with another method or a person who knows Japanese rather than treating a machine translation as definitive.
