The easiest way to play Counter-Strike 1.6 with friends in 2026 is to create an in-game listen server. Use Create Server for a small same-LAN match. If friends are in different homes, run an internet listen server or a standalone Half-Life Dedicated Server (HLDS), allow its UDP port through the firewall, and forward that port from the router. Port 27015 is the usual starting point, but the port shown by the running server is authoritative.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted CS 1.6 servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Choose the right way to host
CS 1.6 has three practical multiplayer arrangements. The correct choice depends on where the players are and whether the host must keep playing while the server runs.

| Situation | Recommended method | Host setup | How friends join |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyone is on the same home, dormitory, or campus LAN | In-game Create Server (listen server) | Choose a map and player limit, start the game, and allow the executable through the local firewall | Find Servers → LAN, or connect to the host’s private IPv4 address |
| Players are in different homes | Internet listen server | Set internet mode, choose a password, allow the server through the firewall, and forward the server’s UDP port when the router requires it | Add the host’s public IP and port in the server browser/Favorites |
| You want a persistent server or the host should not play | Standalone Half-Life Dedicated Server (HLDS) | Install GoldSource dedicated-server software and configure the map, slots, password, LAN mode, and port | Connect to the server’s public IP and port |
Valve describes listen servers as suitable for small LAN games rather than public servers. Standalone HLDS is the advanced option for GoldSource internet hosting, including Counter-Strike 1.6.
Listen server or HLDS: which is better?
| Consideration | Listen server | Standalone HLDS |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | Fastest: select Create Server in the normal game menu | Requires separate GoldSource server files and launch settings |
| Host participation | The host launches the game and can play in the match | The server runs independently, so nobody needs to occupy a player slot |
| Best audience | A small private LAN or an occasional internet session | A group that wants a persistent internet server or more administration |
| Administration | Basic map, slot, password, and session controls | More direct control over startup options, maps, slots, password, and configuration files |
| Public hosting | Not intended as a public server | Designed for advanced internet hosting, but still secure it if the group is private |
For a one-night game, the listen server avoids unnecessary setup. Choose HLDS when the server should remain available after the host closes the normal Counter-Strike client, or when a non-playing administrator should manage it.

What everyone needs before starting
- A legitimate installation: install the Steam Counter-Strike product on every computer. Counter-Strike is sold as an online multiplayer game, and the Counter-Strike 1 Anthology bundle is one official way to obtain the classic release.
- A compatible build: all players should use the same current Steam game installation. Mismatched or unofficial executables can produce protocol, map, or authentication problems.
- Network access: LAN players need to be on the same router or wired/wireless subnet. Remote players need an internet connection and a host whose inbound traffic can reach the game.
- Firewall permission: Windows may ask whether to allow
hl.exeor Counter-Strike on a private network. Approve the private-network rule for the host and clients. - A private game plan: decide who hosts, which map and player limit to use, and whether a password is required. A password prevents strangers from entering a friends-only server.
How to play CS 1.6 over LAN
A same-LAN match does not normally need port forwarding or a public IP. The host creates a listen server and the other computers discover it locally.
Host: create the listen server
- Install and launch Counter-Strike 1.6 on the host PC.
- Choose New Game or Create Server from the main menu.
- Select the map, round settings, and maximum number of players, then start the server.
- When Windows Firewall prompts you, allow the game on the private network. If no prompt appears, open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection → Allow an app through firewall and permit the Counter-Strike executable on private networks.
- Give friends the server password if you set one. Keep the password limited to the group.
Friends: find and join the LAN game
- Open Find Servers and select the LAN tab.
- Select the host’s server and click Connect.
- If discovery does not show the server, find the host’s private IPv4 address. On Windows, the host can run
ipconfigand look for an address such as192.168.1.25under the active adapter. - Open the in-game console and use
connect 192.168.1.25:27015, replacing the address and port with the values used by the host. If the server uses another port, that port must be supplied instead of 27015.
All machines must actually be on the same subnet. A guest Wi-Fi network, client isolation setting, or a VPN that changes routing can make two computers appear connected to the same internet service while preventing LAN discovery.

How to play with friends in different homes
Remote play requires an internet-reachable server. An internet listen server is quick for a one-off session; HLDS is better when the server should remain online independently of the host’s game client.
Internet listen-server procedure
- On the host, open Create Server, choose the map and player limit, and select the internet rather than LAN mode if the menu offers that distinction.
- Set a strong player password. Do not leave a private game open with an easily guessed password.
- Give the host computer a stable private address. A DHCP reservation in the router is useful because a forwarding rule aimed at an old address stops working after a reboot.
- Note the server’s UDP port. 27015 is the common/default starting point in Valve’s server documentation, but a changed launch option or configuration file overrides it.
- Allow the Counter-Strike executable and the selected UDP port through the host computer’s firewall.
- In the router’s administration page, create a UDP port-forwarding rule from the selected external port to the host’s stable private IPv4 address and the same internal port. Save the rule and restart the server if required.
- Find the host’s public IP address from the router status page or the internet connection details. Share that address and port privately, for example
203.0.113.24:27015. The example address is documentation-only; use the host’s real public address.
Forwarding a port is not always necessary when the host is on a network that already permits inbound traffic, but most home routers use NAT and need an explicit rule. The router’s port-forwarding page may call the fields External Port, Internal Port, Protocol, and Destination IP.
How friends connect remotely
- Open Steam’s server browser and go to Favorites → Add server by IP address.
- Enter the host’s public IP and port, then add the server.
- Select the entry and connect. If the server is password-protected, enter the password when prompted.
- If the browser does not refresh immediately, open the game console and run
connect public.ip.address:27015, substituting the actual address and port.
Friends should test from a genuinely separate connection, such as a phone hotspot. Trying the public address from inside the same home can fail when the router lacks NAT loopback even though players outside the home can connect normally.

What port does CS 1.6 use?
UDP 27015 is the documented default starting point for Valve’s dedicated-server setup and the common value used by CS 1.6 guides. It is not a universal guarantee: the active server command line or configuration can select another port. Always verify the value in the server console or configuration before telling friends what to enter.
Recommended Free Tools
| Setting | Typical value | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Server UDP port | 27015 | Where clients send game traffic; forward this port to the host when required |
sv_lan |
0 for internet play |
0 permits internet connections; a LAN-only setting prevents remote clients |
| Client port | 27005 by default | The local port used by an individual game client |
| Multiple-client range | 27005–27032 | Values Valve documents for assigning a different client port to each PC behind one router |
Do not confuse the server port with a client’s local port. The router forwards the server’s listening UDP port to the host computer. The clientport option only separates game clients that share one home connection.
Running a standalone HLDS server
Use HLDS when the group wants a server that persists without a player hosting from the normal game menu, or when you need clearer administration of maps, slots, passwords, and configuration. It is a GoldSource server, not a Source-engine server, so follow Counter-Strike 1.6/GoldSource instructions rather than Source-game guides.
Basic launch pattern
Install the legitimate Half-Life Dedicated Server files, then launch hlds.exe with the Counter-Strike game directory, internet mode, a map, player limit, and port. A typical Windows command is:
hlds.exe -game cstrike +sv_lan 0 +map de_dust2 +maxplayers 10 -port 27015
The command illustrates the required pattern; choose the map and player count that fit your group. If you select another port, use that value consistently in the firewall rule, router forwarding rule, and the address friends enter. Watch the server console for the listening port and startup errors before sharing the address.

Keep a private HLDS server private
- Set a player password in the server configuration or startup options.
- Use a reasonable maximum-player value instead of exposing unused slots.
- Share the public address only with the group and avoid unnecessary public listings.
- Back up configuration files and map customizations before changing them.
- Do not download an untrusted non-Steam build or an unknown executable. Obtain server software from legitimate sources and scan third-party files before use.
Several players behind the same router
When two or more CS 1.6 clients play from one home connection, Steam documents assigning distinct clientport values. The default is 27005; choose a different value for each computer within the documented 27005–27032 range.
Assign a unique client port
- Close Counter-Strike on the affected PC.
- Open the game’s Steam launch-options field.
- Add a value such as
+clientport 27006to the second PC,+clientport 27007to the third, and so on. Leave the first PC at 27005 unless it also needs a change. - Restart the game and test the server list and connection. Do not assign the same value to two clients on the same LAN.
This setting is different from the server’s forwarded UDP port. You normally forward one server port to the host; client-port changes address local collisions when several game clients share one router.
When port forwarding does not work
Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT)
Some internet providers place customers behind CGNAT, so the router receives a private or shared address and cannot accept unsolicited connections from the public internet. Port forwarding in that situation appears configured but remains unreachable. Ask the provider for a public IPv4 address, use a provider-supported gaming solution, or let someone with a reachable connection host.
Blocked inbound ports
An ISP or school, workplace, dormitory, or public Wi-Fi network may block inbound traffic. Test the server from a phone hotspot or another unrelated network. If outside players still time out while local players connect, the block is probably upstream of the host.

Costs, convenience, and managed hosting
The basic listen-server route uses the legitimate game installation each player already owns and the host’s existing network connection. HLDS adds server software setup and ongoing administration rather than a different game license. If nobody wants to manage a router or keep a PC online, a managed CS 1.6 host is an alternative category, but plans, limits, locations, and prices vary; compare the provider’s current terms instead of assuming a fixed cost.
Relay products can solve NAT or CGNAT problems without exposing a router port, but they introduce a third party between players. Confirm that the service supports GoldSource traffic, understand its privacy policy, and test performance with the actual group. A relay is optional, not a Valve requirement.
Pre-match test plan
- Start the server with the intended map, player limit, password, and internet or LAN mode.
- Read the server console or configuration to confirm the active UDP port instead of assuming 27015.
- Join once from the host PC and once from another machine on the same LAN.
- For an internet game, have one friend test from a separate network, such as a mobile hotspot. This avoids a false failure caused by missing NAT loopback.
- Test the password and ensure an extra player is rejected when the configured maximum is reached.
- Close and restart the server once to confirm that the DHCP reservation, firewall rule, and forwarding target still point to the same host address.
- If multiple local clients will play, set their unique
clientportvalues before the scheduled session.
Testing from outside the host’s network is especially important: a server can appear healthy to local players while CGNAT, an upstream firewall, or an incorrect public address blocks everyone else.

| Symptom | Checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| Server is missing from the LAN tab | Confirm every PC is on the same subnet, disable guest-network isolation, allow the game through the private firewall, and try the host’s private IP with connect. |
| Remote friends time out | Recheck the public IP, UDP port, router forwarding target, firewall rule, and sv_lan 0. Test from a phone hotspot to distinguish a local NAT-loopback problem from an actual reachability failure. |
| Only one home PC can connect | Give each client a unique clientport between 27005 and 27032, then restart the game. |
| Friends join and are immediately kicked | Verify the password, maximum-player limit, map compatibility, and the server console log. A full server or a wrong password can look like a network failure. |
| Players experience high latency | Use a wired connection for the host, stop large uploads and downloads, and choose a host geographically close to most players. |
| The host cannot join its own public address | Use the host’s private LAN address from inside the home. Many routers do not support NAT loopback, so failure on the public address does not prove that outside players cannot connect. |
A reliable private-match checklist
- Install the same legitimate Steam CS 1.6 build for everyone.
- Decide whether the match is LAN-only, internet-hosted, or HLDS-based.
- Choose a map, player limit, and private password.
- Record the active server UDP port; begin with 27015 only if the server confirms it.
- Allow the game and port through the host firewall.
- For internet play, reserve the host’s private IP and forward the UDP port.
- Set
sv_lan 0for remote play. - Give friends the public IP or DNS name plus the port, and have them add it under Favorites.
- If several clients share one router, assign unique
clientportvalues. - Test from outside the host’s network before the scheduled match.
For a quick gathering on one network, Create Server is all you need. For friends across the internet, the decisive pieces are a reachable host, the correct UDP forwarding and firewall rules, internet mode, and the exact port shown by the server. HLDS is worthwhile when you need the game world to stay online independently of any player’s session.
Frequently Asked Questions

Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can we play CS 1.6 over LAN without port forwarding?
Yes. Put every computer on the same router or subnet, create a listen server, allow the game through the private firewall, and join through Find Servers → LAN. If discovery fails, connect to the host’s private IPv4 address and active server port.
What port does CS 1.6 use?
UDP 27015 is the common and documented default starting point, but the running server configuration is authoritative. Check the server console or launch options, then use that exact port in the firewall rule, router forwarding rule, and friend connection address.
How do I connect to my friend’s CS 1.6 server?
Ask for the host’s public IP or DNS name and UDP port. Add it under Steam server-browser Favorites, select it, and connect. You can also open the console and run connect followed by the address and port. Enter the password if the server requests one.
Why can LAN players join but online friends cannot?
Check that sv_lan is 0, the firewall allows the executable and UDP port, and the router forwards the same port to the host’s stable private IP. CGNAT, blocked inbound traffic, or an incorrect public IP can still prevent outside connections.
Why does only one CS 1.6 PC work behind our router?
Steam documents separate clientport values for multiple clients sharing a LAN. Leave one at 27005 and assign the others different values, such as 27006 and 27007, within the 27005–27032 range, then restart each game.
Can I host if my router uses CGNAT or will not allow port forwarding?
Not with ordinary inbound forwarding. Ask the ISP for a public IPv4 address, let a friend with a reachable connection host, or evaluate a third-party relay such as Porthole: Local Port Sharing. Check compatibility, privacy, performance, and current pricing before relying on a relay.
The Bottom Line
For LAN play, use Create Server. For friends in different homes, use an internet listen server or HLDS, set a password, enable sv_lan 0, allow the firewall, and forward the server’s confirmed UDP port—usually 27015. Assign unique client ports when several PCs share one router, and test from an outside network before game night.
