Contexto is a word-guessing game where you try to find a hidden word by following clues about meaning. Each guess gets a rank: the lower the number, the closer its meaning is to the answer, and rank #1 is the answer. The key is to follow promising ideas and contexts—not to look for words with similar spelling.
How do you play Contexto?
Enter a word as a guess. The game returns a rank showing how closely that word relates in meaning to the hidden answer. Use the result to choose your next guess, and keep going until you reach #1.

- Type a broad, familiar word to probe a possible topic or category.
- Check its rank and note your closest result so far.
- If the rank is promising, try words connected by meaning, category, use, or context.
- If the rank is far away, switch to a different idea instead of making spelling-only changes.
- Repeat until a guess reaches rank #1.
For example, the Contexto.games rules page illustrates a path from “music” (8,342) to “water” (2,201), “river” (412), “harbour” (47), and “port” (3). The changing ranks point toward a related semantic area; the words do not need to resemble one another in spelling. See the current Contexto.games page and its rules and examples.
What do the numbers mean?
A rank is an ordinal position in a list ordered by closeness of meaning. Lower is better: #3 is closer than #47, and #1 is the hidden word. It is not a percentage or a linear score, so the difference between two ranks does not measure a fixed amount of semantic distance.

On the Contexto.games page, the displayed labels are:
| Rank on Contexto.games | Displayed label |
|---|---|
| #1 | Secret word |
| #2–10 | Extremely close |
| #11–100 | Very close |
| #101–500 | Close |
| #501–1,500 | Getting warmer |
| #1,501 and above | Far away |
The game page also displays an exact number alongside a label. Track the number, not just the color or wording: your best rank gives you a concrete point of comparison as you test new ideas.

How to choose better guesses
Use broad guesses to find a direction
An opening guess is a probe, not a commitment. Start with a familiar word, then use its rank to decide whether to explore that territory or try a different one.
Follow meaning and context
When a guess improves, branch into nearby concepts. Think about what the word belongs to, what it is used for, where it appears, or what is commonly associated with it. In the example path, “river,” “harbour,” and “port” move through connected settings and ideas toward the answer.
Rank #3
- Add a blue disc to block opponents and lift discs higher
- Features blue Blocker Disc: This game includes blue Blocker Disc that open doors to new strategies
- Features blue Blocker Dics: this game includes blue Blocker Dics that open doors to new strategies
Change course when guesses get colder
A weak rank still tells you something: that particular direction is not close. Try another category or relationship rather than changing a letter, searching for a rhyme, or guessing a similar-looking word. Contexto’s feedback is about semantic closeness, not spelling resemblance.
Compare against your best rank
Keep your strongest result in view. A new guess that moves from a high rank to a lower one has found a more promising trail; a higher rank is less close than your current best. This comparison helps you decide which branch to explore next, but it cannot guarantee a solution in a set number of guesses.

Which rules and schedule apply?
The rank bands and vocabulary count depend on the specific version. The Contexto.games page describes a vocabulary of 38,437 words and displays the bands above; those figures should not be assumed to apply to every game or site using the Contexto name. Its page describes a daily game, but a puzzle number and date shown at one moment do not establish a universal reset time or the current puzzle for every player.

The published rules explain the feedback as closeness in meaning, but do not specify an exact ranking algorithm or establish that every Contexto version uses the same vocabulary or implementation. Treat the numbers as practical clues from the version you are playing.
