Purchase or download the game, then return to the HOME Menu. Open its software tile once the download is complete.

Check the game’s own settings for available button-layout, screen, save or load options. Hamster’s release announcement describes customizable button layouts and screen settings, plus save/load functionality for the series; the options available can depend on the game. Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
No Nintendo Switch Online membership requirement for Console Archives is established in the available reporting. These are described as individually released eShop games, so check and follow the purchase terms on the specific title’s listing rather than subscribing on the assumption that it is needed. The subscription process below is for Nintendo Classics, a separate service.
Console Archives and Nintendo Classics are different

For Nintendo Classics, Nintendo’s stated route is to choose Nintendo Switch Online, open Nintendo Classics, select a library, and download that library’s software from eShop. That is not the route for buying a Console Archives release.

Availability, languages and examples
Availability changes over time and may differ between eShop regions. A February 6, 2026 report identified Cool Boarders and Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos as initial Console Archives releases on Switch 2, reported available worldwide at that time. These examples are a dated snapshot, not a complete current catalog. Nintendo Insider’s February 2026 report.
Language support is title-specific. An August 19, 2026 report said Rhapsody II: Ballad of the Little Princess was scheduled for digital release on Switch 2 and PS5 on August 20, 2026, with an English UI and manual but Japanese-only game text. Check the current eShop page for the title you intend to play. RPG Site’s report on the release and language details.
Controllers and Switch compatibility
The standard controllers included with Switch 2 are enough to begin unless the individual game listing says otherwise. Nintendo says a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but compatibility does not mean a separate controller is required for Console Archives. Nintendo also notes that some original Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible on Switch 2; that general backward-compatibility guidance does not confirm whether any particular Console Archives title is available.
