Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can play classic PlayStation 1 RPGs on a modern PC with a PS1 emulator such as DuckStation, using either an original disc or a supported game image. Check your PC against the emulator’s requirements, download it from its official project links, and follow its setup wizard. A compatible controller is optional.
Choose an emulator
For most players, DuckStation is the practical starting point: its project describes it as a PS1 emulator focused on accuracy and game support, provides builds for major desktop platforms, and documents a setup wizard. That does not guarantee every RPG will work perfectly; compatibility can vary by game.

| Emulator | Best suited for | What the project documents |
|---|---|---|
| DuckStation | Players looking for a straightforward setup | Platform releases, a setup wizard, and disc and image workflows. DuckStation project repository |
| PCSX-Redux | Developers, researchers, and people interested in debugging or reverse engineering | The project describes itself as in progress and says it has not reached its first stable release. PCSX-Redux README |
For a general play setup, start with DuckStation. PCSX-Redux is a reasonable alternative if its development and research orientation is what you want.

DuckStation’s project documentation lists support for x86-64, AArch32/ARMv7, AArch64/ARMv8, and RISC-V/RV64 CPUs. For hardware rendering, it lists OpenGL 3.1, OpenGL ES 3.1, Direct3D 11 Feature Level 10.0, or Vulkan 1.0 support. These are requirements stated by the project, not independent performance-test results.
#1 Best Overall
- Mint condition.. Very Rare
For Windows, DuckStation specifies Windows 10 or 11, version 1809 or newer. Check the graphics support as well as the operating-system version if the emulator will not start or a rendering option is unavailable. See the official DuckStation documentation for current requirements; project details can change.
Download and run DuckStation
- Open the official DuckStation project repository and use its linked releases for Windows, Linux, or macOS. Avoid third-party download bundles.
- On Windows, use the installer or archive workflow described by the project.
- Launch DuckStation and follow the setup wizard. Consult the project’s current documentation if your platform’s screens or available options differ.
Set up a controller—or use another input device
A controller is optional. DuckStation documents SDL-, XInput-, and DirectInput-compatible controllers; you can change bindings in Settings → Controllers. The precise mapping depends on your device.
If you want to use a DualSense controller, PlayStation documents USB and Bluetooth connection support for Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11. Some features vary by device and connection; see PlayStation’s PC gaming support page.
Start a game from a disc or image
DuckStation documents both direct disc playback and game-image workflows. Choose a legally obtained disc or a supported image, then use the emulator’s game-starting controls to select that source. Exact menu labels can change between releases, so refer to the current project documentation if the option is not where you expect.
When a PAL game needs an SBI file
Some PAL-region PS1 games use LibCrypt protection and may need matching CD subchannel data in an SBI file. This is not required for every game. DuckStation’s documentation says to place the matching SBI file beside the image with the same base name. For example, a game image named Example.cue should have its corresponding file named Example.sbi in the same folder.
CHD images and subchannel information
DuckStation also supports CHD images with subchannel information built in. Consult the emulator’s documentation for image-format details and any game-specific requirements.

Understand what you need to supply
The emulator, a PlayStation BIOS, and a game disc or image are separate things. DuckStation says its retail BIOS is not supplied with the emulator. The official pages cited here do not establish what BIOS extraction, game copying, or circumvention is permitted in every jurisdiction or circumstance. Obtain and use BIOS and game data only as allowed by your local rules; owning an original disc should not be treated as blanket permission for every copying or circumvention action.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- PlayStation Classic includes 20 preloaded games
- There are also two wired controllers, a scratch card, and an included HDMI cable.
- A perfect console for fans with a lot of taste and for a new generation wanting to experience the dawn of PlayStation for the first time. Playstation Classic design
- Same famous logo, button layout and outer packaging, but this mini console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation and includes an HDMI cable to connect directly to a TV.
- The USB AC adapter is not included or sold separately. You can use your own USB AC adapter for smart devices, the required specification is 5V/1.0 amp/5W or higher.
Troubleshoot the common setup issues
- The emulator will not launch: Check that the Windows version meets DuckStation’s stated minimum and that your system has a listed graphics API. Consult the current requirements in the official repository.
- The controller is not responding: Confirm that the device works with your PC, then review its bindings under Settings → Controllers. DuckStation lists SDL, XInput, and DirectInput compatibility.
- A particular PAL game has a protection-related error: Check whether that title uses LibCrypt and requires a matching SBI file. This requirement is title-specific, not universal.
- A game does not behave as expected: Compatibility is game-specific. The available project descriptions do not justify a promise that every PS1 RPG runs flawlessly.
