How to Play Classic PlayStation Games on PS5 (PS1, PS2 and PS3 Guide)

PS5 does not generally play original PS1, PS2 or PS3 discs. Check PlayStation Plus Premium’s Classics Catalog, then look for a separate PS4/PS5 Store release or compatible PS4 edition.

Most original PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs do not run directly in a PS5. To play a particular classic, first look for it in the PlayStation Plus Premium Classics Catalog, then check the PlayStation Store for a separate PS4 or PS5 release. Catalog entries may be downloadable or stream-only, availability varies by country and changes over time, and PS3 classics in the catalog are streaming-only.

What “classic PlayStation games” means on PS5

There are three different ways an older PlayStation game can be available on a PS5, and they are easy to confuse:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • A Classics Catalog version: An eligible title included with PlayStation Plus Premium. Depending on the listing, you can download it or stream it. The catalog is a changing service library, not a permanent purchase.
  • A separate digital release: A publisher may sell a modern PS4 or PS5 version, remaster or remake through the PlayStation Store. This is bought separately from PlayStation Plus.
  • A compatible PS4 edition: More than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS4 and PS5 in digital or disc form, according to PlayStation’s compatibility information. A PS4 edition can therefore be a route to an older game, but it does not make an original PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc compatible.

PlayStation’s supported route for legacy games is a catalog listing or a modern release rather than general backward compatibility for original PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs. Before buying anything, identify the exact game and check the Store or catalog listing for your account’s country.

Can a PS5 play original PS1, PS2 or PS3 discs?

PS1 discs

Original PS1 discs are not a general supported playback method on PS5. Inserted discs should not be treated as a way to unlock the corresponding classic in the catalog or Store.

PS2 discs

PS2 discs likewise do not generally work as PS5 games. If the title has a catalog version, remaster or PS4 release, use that supported edition instead.

PS3 discs

PS3 discs are not a supported way to play PS3 games on PS5. Even when a PS3-era game appears in the current Classics Catalog, the catalog version is streamed rather than installed locally.

A PS5 with a disc drive can read supported PS4 and PS5 game discs, but the presence of a drive does not add PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc compatibility. The digital PS5 model cannot accept discs at all.

Route 1: Play a game from the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog

The US PlayStation Plus plan page lists the Classics Catalog as a Premium benefit. The selection, membership benefits and included games differ by country and can change, so verify the game in the Store or catalog for the region attached to your PSN account. A title can also leave the service.

Check the exact title on your PS5

  1. Write down the game’s exact name and confirm the country or region of the PSN account you will use.
  2. From the PS5 Games home screen, select PlayStation Plus.
  3. Open Benefits, then choose Classics Catalog.
  4. Search for the title or browse the catalog. Open the game’s individual listing rather than relying on a similarly named entry.
  5. Read the listing for the required membership tier and the available action: Download, Stream or both.

PlayStation’s support guide documents separate Download and Stream actions for eligible catalog games. If the title is absent, that does not prove it is unavailable everywhere; catalog selection is regional. Search the Store for the exact title before deciding that the only option is a subscription.

Download versus stream

Catalog option What happens Important limitation
Download The supported catalog version is installed on the PS5 and launched from your game library. Access remains tied to the applicable active membership and the title remaining in the catalog.
Stream The game runs on PlayStation’s streaming service and video is delivered to the console. Requires a broadband connection; PlayStation lists a minimum 5 Mbps speed for streaming.
PS3 catalog classic The game is streamed rather than downloaded. PS3 classics in the catalog are streaming-only.

For supported games, PlayStation states that 1080p streaming requires at least 15 Mbps. Those are published service thresholds, not a guarantee of identical image quality or latency on every home network. Wi-Fi congestion, other household traffic and the distance to the streaming service can still affect play.

What streaming does not support

PlayStation’s Classics Catalog support page lists several functions and devices as unsupported while streaming. These include broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, PSVR, PS Move, mouse, keyboard and third-party controllers. Queues may also occur when streaming demand is high. Check the current support page before relying on a particular accessory or sharing feature: PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog support.

Route 2: Buy a separate PS4 or PS5 release

If a game is not in the Classics Catalog, search the PlayStation Store for the exact title. The result may be a digital PS4 edition, a native PS5 edition, a remaster or a remake. Availability and price are title- and region-specific; Sony’s general catalog pages do not establish a universal price or guarantee that an unnamed game is currently sold.

How to verify the Store edition

  1. Open PlayStation Store on the PS5 and search the exact game title.
  2. Inspect the platform labels. Confirm whether the product is PS4, PS5 or both.
  3. Read the description to determine whether it is the original emulated release, a remaster, a remake or a different edition.
  4. Check the account’s currency, age rating, included downloadable content and any upgrade terms before purchasing.
  5. After purchase, download the edition shown in your library. Do not expect the original disc to substitute for this digital license.

A Store purchase is distinct from catalog access: it is not dependent on the game remaining in the subscription catalog, although the account and the Store license still govern access. The game may also differ from the original in resolution, controls, save features, language support or included content, so read the edition details rather than assuming it is a bit-for-bit copy.

Route 3: Use a compatible PS4 edition

PlayStation says more than 4,000 PS4 games are ready to play on PS4 and PS5. If the classic you want has an official PS4 release, that version can be played digitally on any PS5, while a physical PS4 disc requires a PS5 model with a disc drive. This is a PS4 backward-compatibility path, not evidence that the original PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc will run.

Digital PS4 edition

Buy or redeem the PS4 version through the Store, then select it from the PS5 game library. Some products include both PS4 and PS5 entitlements; the product page is the authority for that particular title.

Physical PS4 edition

Insert the PS4 disc into a disc-drive PS5 and install the supported PS4 game. The disc normally needs to remain inserted when you play because it acts as the license. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot use this route.

Choosing the right route

Question Classics Catalog Separate Store release Compatible PS4 edition
Is the exact game available? Only if listed in your region’s current catalog. Only if a PS4 or PS5 product is sold in your region. Only if an official PS4 version exists.
Download or stream? Listing determines it; PS3 catalog classics are stream-only. Normally downloaded; the individual product controls the details. Digital versions download; physical versions install from disc.
Payment model Requires the applicable active Premium membership. One-time Store purchase for that title. One-time digital purchase or a physical disc.
Does access persist if the title leaves a catalog? No catalog guarantee; access follows membership and continued inclusion. The Store license remains separate from catalog rotation. The purchased or owned PS4 edition remains the relevant license.
Original legacy disc required? No. No. No; a compatible PS4 disc is a different product.

Use the catalog route when the exact game is included and you accept subscription-based access. Prefer a Store release when you want a title-specific purchase or the game is absent from Premium. Choose a PS4 edition when that is the only supported modern release or when you already own the compatible PS4 version.

Membership, region and catalog changes

Do you need PlayStation Plus Premium?

For the US service, PlayStation identifies the Classics Catalog as a Premium benefit. A lower PlayStation Plus tier does not automatically provide access to every classic. The game’s current listing and your local plan page determine the requirement, so check both before subscribing or renewing.

Why a friend can see a game you cannot

PlayStation Plus benefits and catalog selection vary by country. The account’s region, not merely the physical location of the console, controls which Store and subscription listings you see. A game can also be removed or replaced over time. Use your own PS5 listing as the final availability check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Subscription access is not ownership

A downloaded catalog game remains tied to the applicable active membership and to the game’s continued inclusion. Downloading it does not convert it into a permanent Store purchase. If the membership expires or the title leaves the catalog, the license can stop permitting play.

What to check before spending money

Start with the game, not the subscription. Write down the exact title, original platform and any alternate names, then search both Classics Catalog and PlayStation Store while signed in to the account that will play it. This avoids paying for Premium when the game is sold separately, or buying a modern edition that is unavailable in your region.

  • Confirm the edition: A listing labeled PS4 may be an untouched port, an emulated release, a remaster or a remake. Those can have different graphics, controls, save systems, language options and downloadable content.
  • Confirm the hardware: Digital products work on either PS5 model, but a physical PS4 release needs the disc-drive model. The Digital Edition cannot read any disc.
  • Compare access terms: Premium is recurring access to an eligible catalog, while a Store purchase is a title-specific license. Neither option is guaranteed to match the original disc release exactly.
  • Check the account region: Store currency, age-rating rules, catalog selection and plan benefits follow the account’s country or region.
  • Check the listing date: Catalog games can leave, and a title visible in an older video or article may no longer be included.

There is no universal price for a classic game or for Premium. Prices, taxes, discounts and plan terms depend on country and change over time, so use the price shown in your own PlayStation Store and plan page. Do not assume that owning a PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc entitles you to a digital copy.

Version, save and control differences

Even when the title name is identical, a catalog release and a separately sold PS4 or PS5 edition can be different products. Read the individual description for save-transfer support, trophy support, display options, included expansions and language availability. A remake may change the story presentation or gameplay, while a remaster may alter resolution, audio or controls. The official listing, not the original box, determines what is included in the PS5 version.

Streaming adds another layer: the game is executed remotely, so local installation space is not the limiting factor, but network quality and service demand affect responsiveness. Downloaded catalog and Store versions use local console storage and can be played without an active streaming session, but catalog downloads still require the applicable membership and continued inclusion.

Streaming checklist before you start

  • Confirm the game’s listing says Stream and that your membership includes the required catalog benefit.
  • Measure the connection used by the PS5. PlayStation publishes 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for streaming and 15 Mbps for supported 1080p streaming.
  • Pause large downloads and other high-bandwidth activity on the network.
  • Use a controller supported by the streaming service; PlayStation lists third-party controllers among unsupported devices while streaming.
  • Plan for a queue during busy periods and for the possibility that broadcast, Share Play, Share Screen or Remote Play will not be available.

The speed figures are minimum service thresholds. They do not measure your controller response time or promise a particular resolution in every session.

Troubleshooting common problems

The disc is rejected or nothing happens

Confirm that it is a PS4 or PS5 disc supported by your PS5 model. An original PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc is not a general PS5 compatibility route. Look for a catalog listing or a Store release instead.

The game is missing from Classics Catalog

Search the exact title in PlayStation Store, verify the PSN account region, and check whether the game has been removed from the current catalog. Do not assume a listing seen on another country’s account is available to yours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is a Stream button but play is unstable

Check that the connection meets PlayStation’s published minimum, reduce competing network traffic and retry later if a queue is shown. A connection can exceed 5 Mbps and still suffer from congestion or latency.

The game is installed but will not launch

Check the membership status associated with the account that downloaded it and confirm the title is still included. A catalog download is governed by the subscription license, not simply by the files stored on the console.

A PS4 disc will not install

Make sure the PS5 has a disc drive and that the disc is an official PS4 game. A PS4-compatible edition is separate from an original PS1, PS2 or PS3 release.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put an original PS1 disc in a PS5 and play it?

No. Original PS1 discs are not a general supported playback route on PS5. Check Classics Catalog and PlayStation Store for a supported digital or modern release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do PS2 discs work on PS5?

Generally no. A PS2 title must have a current Classics Catalog entry or a separate PS4/PS5 release to be played on PS5.

Can I play PS3 games on PS5?

Only through an available supported release. PS3 discs do not work, and PS3 classics included in the Classics Catalog are streaming-only.

Is PlayStation Plus Premium required for every classic game?

The US Classics Catalog is a Premium benefit, but a title may also be sold separately in the PlayStation Store. Check the game listing and your local plan page because benefits vary by country.

Can I download a classic game instead of streaming it?

Some eligible catalog entries show Download, while others show Stream. PS3 catalog classics are streaming-only. The individual listing determines the available action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What internet speed does PlayStation require for streaming?

PlayStation lists a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps for streaming and at least 15 Mbps for supported 1080p streaming. Those thresholds do not guarantee perfect latency or image quality.

Will a downloaded catalog game keep working after my Premium subscription ends?

No. Downloading stores files on the console, but play access remains tied to the applicable active membership and the title’s continued inclusion in the catalog.

Can a PS5 Digital Edition use a physical PS4 copy of a classic?

No. Physical PS4 editions require a PS5 model with a disc drive. The Digital Edition cannot read discs.

The Bottom Line

PS5 does not generally read original PS1, PS2 or PS3 discs. Find the exact game in the PlayStation Plus Premium Classics Catalog, check whether it downloads or streams, and verify regional availability. If it is absent, look for a separate PS4/PS5 Store release or a compatible PS4 edition. Remember that catalog access is subscription-based, PS3 catalog games are streaming-only, and PlayStation’s published streaming minimums are 5 Mbps (15 Mbps for supported 1080p).
