If not, DOSBox is a practical option for many games made for DOS—but it does not solve every old Windows game or guarantee that every RPG will run unchanged. The right route depends on the game, edition, and the media you have.
Choose a route for your game

For a storefront game, check both the game’s system requirements and the storefront client’s operating-system support; Steam recommends checking both. Check for a modern release first
A current digital edition is often the least hands-on route because its publisher may package an emulator or other compatibility layer and provide instructions. For example, GOG’s Ultima 4+5+6 listing says the collection is powered by DOSBox and lists Windows and Mac OS X. Its changelog records verification for Windows 10 and Windows 11 on 20 March 2025. The same listing notes a special macOS limitation for Ultima IV. Those details are specific to that collection; check the listing for the edition you intend to use.
Use DOSBox for DOS games without a suitable package
DOSBox emulates an Intel x86 PC environment, including sound, graphics, mouse, and joystick support, so many DOS games can run on modern computers through it. Its DOS-like prompt is sufficient to install and run many DOS games, but the project warns that it cannot run every PC program. Install the emulator that fits your setup
DOSBox Staging’s current installation guide covers Windows, macOS, and Linux. It lists requirements of 64-bit Windows 8, 10, or 11; macOS 12 (Monterey) or later on Intel and Apple silicon; and a modern x86_64 Linux distribution on a laptop or desktop released after 2010. These are DOSBox Staging requirements, not a promise that every game will work on those systems. DOSBox Staging installation guide
Some storefront DOS games include a private DOSBox copy. Installing DOSBox Staging separately does not replace those bundled copies, so follow the storefront edition’s instructions if you are using one.

Mount only the game media you need
DOSBox does not automatically expose your computer’s folders or drives inside its emulated environment. The manual’s mounting instructions explain how to make a game folder, CD-ROM, or disc image available to DOSBox. Identify which kind of copy you have, then follow the manual or the specific game’s current guide to mount the relevant media. Avoid exposing unrelated folders or drives.

Try the game with the default emulated settings first. If it needs adjustment, DOSBox documents cycle controls and other configuration options; change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped. Save your game before experimenting, and save progress often while testing. The DOSBox manual cautions that it cannot run every PC program, so a failure may reflect a game-specific compatibility limit rather than a setting you have overlooked.

If your copy is on a CD or DVD
Check whether your computer has an optical drive and whether it can read the disc. DOSBox’s manual covers mounting CD-ROM media. If your computer lacks an optical drive but you intend to use the original disc, an external USB DVD drive is an optional way to read it. You do not need one for a digital release.
If the game was made for Windows
Do not assume DOSBox is the answer just because a game is old. First check the exact edition’s official support page or storefront notes for your operating system. The available compatibility details here do not establish one reliable method for all old Windows games, so avoid applying DOS setup instructions to a Windows title unless its own guidance calls for them.

Keep the edition and your files in mind
Compatibility belongs to a specific release, not just a game title. Record which edition you installed and keep any installer and game-specific instructions you may need again. If preserving an original copy matters to you, retain its files and note whether your setup depends on a disc, a disc image, or a bundled emulator.
