Connect an external USB Blu-ray drive, insert the disc, and open it in playback software. In VLC Desktop 3.0, choose Media → Open Disc → Blu-ray, select the drive, then click Play. That is the basic workflow, but it does not guarantee that every commercially released or Ultra HD Blu-ray disc will play: drive support and software support are separate requirements.
What you need
- An external Blu-ray optical drive: A computer without a built-in Blu-ray drive needs a compatible external drive to read the physical disc. Check that the manufacturer lists support for your operating system and Blu-ray discs.
- A suitable connection: Match the drive’s connector to a port on your computer. An adapter is needed only if the connectors do not match; it is not universally required.
- Playback software: VLC can open a Blu-ray drive through its disc dialog. Commercial discs may require additional software files, so a connected drive alone may not be enough.
Before buying, check the drive’s listed disc formats as well as the computer’s ports and operating-system compatibility. If you want to play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, confirm UHD reading support explicitly; ordinary Blu-ray support does not establish UHD compatibility. The documentation cited here does not verify specific drive models or a universal UHD playback setup.

Play a Blu-ray disc in VLC
- Connect the external Blu-ray drive to the computer and wait for the operating system to recognize it.
- Insert the Blu-ray disc into the drive.
- Open VLC and choose Media → Open Disc.
- Select Blu-ray as the disc type, then select the drive containing the disc.
- Click Play.
VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop User Documentation 3.0 describes selecting Blu-ray in the Open Disc dialog and choosing the disc device. The steps explain how to open a disc; they are not a promise that every title will play.

If a commercial Blu-ray does not play
A failure does not automatically mean the external drive is defective. VideoLAN’s Windows FAQ says that additional files are needed to enable playback of commercially released Blu-ray discs in VLC. The drive reads the disc; the playback software must also support the disc and its protection.

Protection schemes can add further complexity. MakeMKV’s BD+ and SVQ documentation explains that BD+ processing involves executing code and using decryption keys; the vendor says its software includes a virtual-machine implementation but does not include BD+ keys. MakeMKV also states that, starting with version 1.5.8, it automatically downloads required SVQ files for discs that need disc-specific SVQ. Those are vendor statements about MakeMKV’s BD+ processing, not a guarantee that every protected disc will work in a given player or setup.
Choosing an external drive
Compare drives against the computer and the discs you actually own. The cited documentation does not establish compatibility for any particular drive model, so use the manufacturer’s specifications rather than assuming every USB Blu-ray drive will suit every computer.

Quick troubleshooting
- The drive is not listed in VLC: Confirm that it is connected, recognized by the operating system, and that the disc is inserted. In Open Disc, select the drive containing the disc.
- A commercial disc is detected but will not play: Check the player’s documentation for commercial Blu-ray support and any required additional files. VideoLAN identifies this as a separate requirement for commercial discs in VLC on Windows.
- You are trying to play an Ultra HD Blu-ray: Verify UHD-specific drive and software compatibility before buying hardware or troubleshooting; standard Blu-ray instructions do not establish a working UHD route.
