To play a DVD movie on an HP laptop, you need both a working DVD drive and an app that can play DVD-Video. Check whether your exact laptop model has an internal optical drive; if it does not, connect a compatible external USB DVD drive. Then open a DVD playback app. Windows 10 does not include a preinstalled app for DVD or Blu-ray movie playback, according to HP Support.
How to play a DVD on an HP laptop
- Check for a drive. Look for a disc tray or slot, then confirm the exact laptop model’s specifications on HP Support. Not every HP notebook has a built-in CD/DVD drive.
- Connect an external drive if needed. Choose one that supports your disc type and connects to a port on your laptop. For example, HP lists its USB External DVDRW Drive as compatible with computers that have an open USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port; check the product’s current specifications before purchase.
- Insert the disc and open a compatible DVD playback app. The drive provides access to the disc, but it does not by itself guarantee movie playback. Check the app publisher’s documentation for compatibility with your Windows version and disc.
- Choose the movie in the app if playback does not start automatically. Windows may recognize the drive or display files on a data disc even if no installed app can play a DVD-Video movie.
DVD-Video playback is distinct from opening files on a data DVD. DVD support also does not establish Blu-ray support: a Blu-ray disc requires a Blu-ray-capable drive and compatible playback software.

Does your HP laptop have a DVD drive?
Check the sides of the laptop for a disc tray or slot, then verify the exact model on HP Support. HP notes that several notebook models do not come with CD/DVD drives. If yours has no internal drive, an external USB DVD drive is the hardware option.

Before choosing an external drive, check its supported disc formats, the laptop’s available USB port, and the cable or power arrangement in the drive’s specifications. HP’s cited USB External DVDRW Drive page lists a USB Type-A cable in the package and a one-year limited warranty for that specific product; these details should not be assumed for other drives or current listings. A DVDRW drive name does not mean DVD playback software is included.

Why won’t an HP laptop play a DVD?
No internal drive or external drive
If the laptop has no optical drive, inserting a disc is not possible until you connect a compatible external DVD drive.
The drive works, but there is no movie playback app
Windows 10 does not include a preinstalled application for DVD or Blu-ray movie playback, HP says. If a disc appears in Windows but the movie will not start, install or open a compatible playback app and check its publisher’s documentation. Do not assume that Windows Media Player will play DVD-Video.

The disc is Blu-ray, not DVD
A DVD drive and a DVD playback app do not prove Blu-ray compatibility. Verify both the drive’s supported formats and the playback app’s support for Blu-ray.

What to do if the DVD drive is missing in Windows
If the drive does not appear in File Explorer, first confirm that your HP model actually has one or that an external drive is connected. If the hardware should be present, troubleshoot drive detection rather than changing movie-player settings. HP’s guidance covers checking recognition in BIOS and Device Manager and running hardware troubleshooting. Microsoft notes that driver or configuration problems can cause a CD/DVD drive not to appear in File Explorer or to show an error in Device Manager; its listed fixes do not resolve every case.

- Confirm the hardware. Check the laptop’s model specifications or confirm that the external drive is connected to a supported port.
- Check whether Windows detects the drive. Use HP’s model-specific support guidance to check BIOS and Device Manager. If Device Manager reports an error, follow the relevant Windows troubleshooting guidance.
- Use instructions for your Windows version. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but interface labels and steps can differ across versions and builds. Follow current guidance rather than assuming Windows 10 screens match Windows 11.
- Check HP drivers by model. Search HP Support for your exact product and installed Windows version. For a compatible computer running Windows 11, HP advises using Windows Update if its support page does not list drivers; HP does not guarantee that Windows Update will have every driver or that all software will function.
