Choose a tree suited to your local climate and planting site, set its root flare at or slightly above ground level, and keep the root ball and nearby soil moist while the tree establishes. During the first year, check soil conditions instead of following a fixed watering calendar: rainfall, heat, soil drainage, tree size, and local water rules all affect when to water.
Choose a tree and site that work together
Before you buy a tree, consider the conditions where it will grow—not just its appearance or size in the nursery. Match the species to your local climate and soil, and check that there is room for its mature height and spread. A tree poorly suited to its location can create problems long after planting.

If you are unsure what will thrive in your soil or climate, ask a local nursery or extension service. Local advice matters because the right species and care schedule depend on regional conditions.

Plant the tree without burying its root flare
Prepare a broad planting hole
Dig a hole at least twice as wide as the root ball, but no deeper than the root ball, following University of Maryland Extension guidance. A broad hole gives roots room to grow into the surrounding soil. Keep the ground beneath the root ball firm so the tree does not settle lower after planting.

Find the root flare and set the planting height
The root flare is the point where the trunk widens and transitions into the main roots. If it is hidden by soil or growing medium, gently uncover it before setting the tree. Position the flare level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Do not bury the trunk flare: planting too deeply can create long-term problems.
Backfill and water
Once the tree is positioned, return soil around the root ball and firm it enough to remove large air pockets without compacting it heavily. Water thoroughly at planting so the root ball and surrounding soil are wetted. A slow hose trickle is one practical way to soak the root zone rather than letting water run off the surface.

Water by checking soil, not by following a universal schedule
New trees need regular supplemental water while their roots establish, but no single weekly amount or interval works for every location. Check both the root ball and the soil nearby; the surface can look dry while soil below it remains moist, or the root ball can dry out even when surrounding soil is damp.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Check moisture in the root ball and several inches into the nearby soil, including below the mulch.
- Water when the soil is drying, taking recent rainfall, heat, drainage, and local restrictions into account.
- Apply water slowly enough to soak the root zone rather than run away from it.
Extension recommendations differ because they address different climates. Oregon State University Extension describes routine, thorough watering with frequency adjusted for soil and weather, and its Oregon guidance notes that regular watering may be needed beyond the first year. University of Florida IFAS gives a more frequent schedule during the initial months and recommends weekly watering afterward until establishment; that is Florida guidance, not a universal timetable. Use local extension advice where you need a region-specific schedule.

Establishment can take longer than one year. Texas A&M Forest Service recommends watering for at least two years in its guidance, so do not assume that reaching the first anniversary means a tree no longer needs attention.
Mulch to protect the root zone, not the trunk
Organic mulch helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds around a young tree. Spread it over the root zone, but leave the trunk and root flare clear. Mulch piled against the trunk can contribute to disease, insect, rodent, and root problems, as UNH Extension warns.

Recommendations for mulch depth vary among sources and regions. Follow local extension guidance rather than treating one depth as appropriate everywhere. Keep mulch from forming a mound against the trunk—a “mulch volcano”—and check soil moisture beneath it before watering. Local wildfire restrictions may also affect which mulch materials are appropriate.
Stake only when the tree needs support
Staking is not automatic. Use support if the tree needs help staying stable because of its condition or exposure at the site. If you stake it, use flexible ties that allow some movement and avoid constricting the trunk. Remove the supports once they are no longer needed, generally within the first year, following University of Florida IFAS guidance.

Prune lightly while the tree establishes
At planting, limit pruning to branches that are dead, damaged, crossing, or rubbing. Avoid severe pruning: removing too much foliage reduces the tree’s leaf area while it is establishing. If a structural problem is not straightforward to assess, seek advice from a qualified local arborist rather than making large cuts by default.
Quick Recap
A practical first-year care routine
At planting
- Confirm that the species suits the local climate, soil, and available space.
- Set the root flare at or slightly above surrounding grade.
- Water the root ball and surrounding soil thoroughly.
- Apply mulch over the root zone while keeping it away from the trunk and flare.
- Stake only if the tree needs added stability; prune only dead, damaged, crossing, or rubbing branches.
As the tree establishes
- Check moisture in both the root ball and adjacent soil, including beneath the mulch.
- Water when those areas are drying, adjusting for rainfall, heat, drainage, and local water restrictions.
- Keep mulch clear of the trunk and root flare, and remove stakes when support is no longer needed.
- Continue monitoring after the first year if local conditions or the tree’s establishment needs warrant it.
