An SEO migration is safest when you treat it as a controlled URL and infrastructure change, not as a launch-day redesign. Before changing anything, document the URLs and search performance you have, map every important old URL to its intended destination, test the new site, deploy direct permanent redirects, remove staging restrictions, and monitor old and new properties in Google Search Console. That process reduces avoidable losses, but it cannot guarantee unchanged rankings or traffic while search engines recrawl and reprocess the site.
Google’s Site Moves and Migrations documentation recommends preparing and testing the destination, configuring redirects, and watching both sites after launch. Use the sequence below as an operational plan for a domain, subdomain, URL-path, protocol, CMS, or hosting change.

First, define what is actually moving
The controls you need depend on whether public URLs change. A hosting switch with identical URLs is operationally different from a domain move, even if both are called a “migration.” Write the exact scope down before engineering work begins.
URL-changing migrations
A domain change, subdomain change, URL-path redesign, or HTTP-to-HTTPS move creates old and new URL versions. Search engines and users need a clear connection between those versions. Your plan must include an old-to-new URL map, permanent redirects, updated canonical references, a new sitemap, and validation of crawlability and indexing.

Infrastructure-only changes
Moving hosts or servers while keeping the protocol, hostname, paths, and parameters unchanged follows a different path in Google’s guidance. There may be no redirect map to build, but you still need to test DNS and server responses, preserve robots.txt and sitemap availability, check that the site remains crawlable, and monitor Search Console and traffic through the cutover.
| Change type | Do public URLs change? | Primary SEO controls | Change of Address |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domain move | Yes | One-to-one URL map, 301/308 redirects, new sitemap, Search Console monitoring | Relevant when the move is an eligible domain change |
| Subdomain move | Yes | URL map, permanent redirects, crawl and index checks | Relevant when the move is an eligible subdomain change |
| Path or information-architecture change | Yes | Map every changed path, redirect directly to final URLs, update canonicals and internal links | Not the normal control |
| HTTP-to-HTTPS | Yes | Protocol redirects, secure canonical URLs, secure sitemap and asset checks | Not the normal control |
| CMS or platform change with new URLs | Yes | All URL-changing controls plus platform launch testing | Usually not applicable unless the domain or subdomain also changes |
| Hosting or infrastructure change with identical URLs | No | Server, DNS, crawlability, uptime and Search Console validation | No |
Control the scope before you schedule a cutover
Google recommends changing one major element at a time. Combining a domain move with a redesign, taxonomy rewrite, content pruning and CMS change makes a traffic change difficult to diagnose. If a bundle is unavoidable, document each change and create a separate acceptance test for it.
Set a migration owner and rollback decision
Assign one person to approve the URL map, one to deploy redirects and infrastructure, one to validate content and analytics, and one to watch Search Console after launch. Define in advance which technical failures justify pausing the rollout or restoring the previous site. A rollback plan is useful only if the old site, data and redirect configuration can actually be restored.

Choose a launch window
Where practical, launch during a lower-traffic period when engineers and analysts are available. This does not make crawling faster, but it gives you time to identify broken redirects, accidental blocking or server overload before a peak business period.
Decide between an all-at-once and staged move
Google generally recommends moving all URLs together for small and medium-sized sites. Large sites can move sections to make troubleshooting more manageable. A section test is not proof that the complete migration will behave identically: different sections can have different crawl rates, link profiles, templates and traffic patterns.
Build a baseline you can compare after launch
You cannot tell whether a migration caused a problem unless you preserve a reliable “before” view. Create a dated export and keep it outside the production system so it remains available during the cutover.
Collect the complete URL universe
Combine URL lists from the CMS, current XML sitemap, server logs, analytics, Search Console and a fresh crawl. Each source reveals different URLs: logs can expose crawled addresses missing from the sitemap; analytics identifies landing pages; Search Console shows search impressions and indexed examples; a crawl reveals links, status codes and technical directives.

Prioritize URLs by business and search value
Mark pages that receive organic sessions, impressions, conversions, external links or substantial internal links. Include image, PDF and feed URLs when they are part of the public site and have search value. Do not restrict the map to pages currently listed in the sitemap.
Save technical snapshots
For the old site, record at least the URL, status code, title, canonical target, indexability directive, internal-link count, organic landing-page sessions, conversions and last-crawl information available to your team. Save the crawl file, analytics export, Search Console performance export and sitemap. These records let you distinguish normal reprocessing from a deployment error.
Create an old-to-new URL map
The URL map is the migration’s source of truth. Every old URL should have one explicit outcome: a direct new destination, an intentional retirement, or a documented exception.
Map one old URL to its best final destination
For a page that remains available, map the old address to its exact new address, including the correct path and protocol. Redirect directly to the final URL rather than sending a visitor through several intermediate addresses. Keep the mapping in a version-controlled spreadsheet or database so developers, content owners and QA use the same rules.
Handle removed content honestly
If an old page has a genuinely relevant replacement, redirect to that replacement. If no equivalent exists, do not send every obsolete URL to the home page merely to avoid a 404. An irrelevant destination gives users and crawlers a poor result; record the retirement and return the status your content policy calls for.
Include variants and edge cases
Account for trailing-slash variants, uppercase and lowercase paths where your server treats them differently, legacy parameters, pagination, file extensions, old campaign URLs and alternate hostnames. Decide how query strings are preserved or discarded and test those rules with real examples from logs.
| Map field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Old URL | Exact scheme, hostname, path and relevant query pattern |
| New URL | One final canonical destination, or “retire” when no relevant replacement exists |
| Redirect status | 301 or 308 for a permanent move, with the rule or application responsible |
| Priority | Traffic, links, conversions or strategic importance |
| Validation result | Observed status, final URL, content match and crawl date |
Prepare and test the destination before cutover
Build the new site in a test environment that reflects production as closely as possible. Google’s migration guidance calls for preparing and testing the new site before launch.

Remove staging barriers at the right moment
Staging sites commonly use a robots.txt disallow rule, authentication or a noindex directive. Those controls can be appropriate before launch, but they must be removed or changed when the public site goes live. Add a launch check that requests robots.txt and representative pages from outside the internal network and confirms that the production response is crawlable.
Verify content, templates and URLs
Crawl the test site and compare it with the baseline. Check that important copy, headings, metadata, internal links, images, downloadable files and structured page elements survived the platform change. Confirm that canonical references point to the intended new URLs, not staging addresses or old paths. Generate the production XML sitemap from the final host and inspect it for status errors or old URLs.
Test server capacity
Google notes that a new site may receive heavier crawling after a move. Large sites should coordinate with their hosting provider and confirm that the application, database, cache, firewall and rate limits can handle the additional requests. Load testing should include redirect traffic and crawler-like requests, not only logged-in user journeys.
Engineer direct, permanent redirects
Deploy redirects on the old URLs before or at the instant the new URLs become authoritative. Use server-side permanent redirects such as 301 or 308 where possible. Google Search Central states that “301 and other permanent redirects don’t cause a loss in PageRank.” That statement describes PageRank treatment; it is not a promise that rankings, impressions or traffic will remain unchanged during reprocessing.
Keep every redirect to one hop
Each old URL should resolve directly to its final new URL. Avoid chains such as old HTTP URL to old HTTPS URL to new domain to new path. Googlebot can follow multiple hops, but Google advises keeping unavoidable chains low—ideally no more than three and fewer than five. Chains add latency, increase failure points and make diagnosis harder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTest status and destination behavior
For representative high-value URLs and samples from every rule, request the old address without relying on a browser cache. Confirm the permanent status, the Location header, the final status and the content at the destination. Test links with and without trailing slashes, common parameters, mobile or alternate host variants, and URLs that previously produced errors. Verify that redirect rules do not loop or send unrelated pages to the home page.
Keep redirects operational after launch
Do not remove the old host as soon as the new site appears in search. Users, external links and crawlers can continue to request old URLs while the transition is processed. Keep the old domain and its redirects available and monitor both properties; Google’s documentation does not establish one universal retention period.

Launch with a controlled runbook
Use an ordered runbook so a missed setting does not depend on memory during a stressful release.
- Freeze the approved map. Record the version of the old-to-new mapping, content release and redirect configuration that will go live.
- Deploy the new site and redirect rules. Make the old URLs resolve to their mapped destinations in one hop wherever possible.
- Remove temporary crawl restrictions. Check robots.txt, meta robots and HTTP headers for accidental disallow or noindex settings inherited from staging.
- Update canonical references and internal links. They should use the intended new scheme, hostname and paths, not old URLs or staging hosts.
- Publish and submit the new XML sitemap. Ensure it contains the new canonical URLs and is reachable from the live site.
- Run smoke tests. Request key old URLs, key new URLs, navigation paths, forms, assets and error pages from an external network.
- Open Google Search Console. Inspect representative new URLs, check indexing and crawl reports, and monitor the old and new properties separately where applicable.
- Use Change of Address when eligible. For a qualifying domain or subdomain move, submit the tool only after redirects work. It does not apply to every platform, path or infrastructure change.
Use Search Console and crawl data to validate the move
Search Console is the primary free tool named in Google’s guidance for submitting a sitemap, inspecting URLs and monitoring indexing. Verify ownership of the relevant old and new properties before launch so historical comparisons are available.

Choose high-traffic pages, pages with external links, a sample from each template, recently published content, a removed page and several parameter variants. URL Inspection can reveal whether Google can fetch the page, which canonical it selected and whether indexing is pending or blocked.
Crawl both sides
A crawler such as Screaming Frog SEO Spider can check redirect coverage, chains, loops, broken internal links, status errors and canonical targets at scale. Compare the crawl with your URL map rather than treating a successful homepage request as proof that the migration is healthy.
Check the sitemap and reports for contradictions
A sitemap listing old URLs, canonicals pointing to the old host or internal links that still use retired paths sends mixed signals. Correct the source templates or generation rules, then recrawl. Search Console errors should be triaged by pattern and volume, with high-value landing pages handled first.
Monitor the first days and weeks
Track the old and new sites against the baseline instead of relying on one total traffic number. Segment organic landing pages by host, directory, template and country where that helps isolate a rule or section.

Allow for Google’s processing time
Google says medium-sized websites can take a few weeks or more for new URLs to gradually replace old URLs in results, and larger sites can take longer. There is no fixed crawl frequency; processing depends partly on URL volume and server speed. A dip during this interval is not by itself proof of permanent damage, but a technical error should be investigated immediately.
Best Value
Diagnose common migration failures
Old URLs return 404 or 5xx instead of redirecting
Compare the failing addresses with the map and server rules. Check whether the request reaches the intended virtual host, whether a path-normalization rule runs before the redirect, and whether the application is generating an error before the web server can respond. Restore the direct rule, then retest a sample and the complete high-priority set.
Redirects loop or chain
Trace each Location header until the final response. Loops usually arise when HTTP-to-HTTPS, hostname normalization and path rewrites are owned by separate layers. Consolidate the logic so the old URL points directly to the final canonical address, and remove rules that send the destination back through the old layer.
New pages are not being indexed
Inspect an affected URL for robots.txt denial, noindex headers, authentication, a wrong canonical, a non-200 response or a sitemap omission. Confirm that the page is reachable through internal links and that the server is not returning intermittent errors. Fix the blocking condition before requesting reprocessing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Traffic falls sharply on a subset of pages
Compare the affected landing pages with their map entries, final content, canonical targets and redirect status. A pattern confined to one template or directory often points to a rule or deployment defect rather than a site-wide algorithmic change. Correct the technical cause and continue monitoring impressions, clicks and conversions while Google recrawls.
The server struggles after launch
Use logs to separate crawler requests from user requests, identify expensive redirect or application paths, and coordinate capacity changes with the hosting team. Keep essential pages responsive and avoid adding new migration rules without testing their effect on request volume.
Plan ownership, documentation and optional help
Keep the final URL map, redirect configuration, sitemap version, launch timestamp, Search Console property list, crawl exports and incident log together. Future teams need to know why a redirect exists and which old URL set it covers.
For a large or highly regulated site, an independent technical SEO migration audit or implementation service can review the map, test environment, redirect deployment and monitoring plan. The value is in specialist execution and verification; no service can guarantee that rankings or traffic will remain constant.
The practical outcome to aim for
A successful migration is not one in which every keyword stays at the same position on launch day. It is one in which every important old URL has a deliberate destination, the new site is crawlable and technically coherent, redirects work in one hop, Search Console and logs show healthy recrawling, and the team can identify and correct anomalies quickly. Isolate major changes, preserve your baseline, launch with a tested runbook, and give Google enough time to process the new URL set.
