Plan an AI-assisted film by deciding what each scene needs to accomplish, building a visual plan, then assigning AI only bounded tasks that people can review and revise. Keep human control of narrative, shot selection, continuity, and final approval—from the first storyboard through the finished delivery.
1. Start with the story problem, not the tool
Before choosing a model or generating material, identify what the audience needs to learn or feel in each scene. For every scene, write down its dramatic purpose, essential visual and sound information, and the change it creates in the story. These decisions give you criteria for judging generated material; without them, a technically striking clip can still be the wrong shot.

Mark which elements are essential to the story and which can be explored or substituted. A location, prop, transition, or temporary sound bed might be a candidate for AI assistance. A character’s defining action, a key emotional beat, or a crucial continuity detail may need tighter human direction or a different production method. The choice depends on the script and what you can approve—not on whether a tool can produce something plausible.

Write a scene brief
- Purpose: What must the scene communicate or change?
- Audience experience: What should viewers notice, understand, or feel?
- Must-match details: Which character, costume, prop, setting, movement, or sound details must remain consistent?
- Production constraint: What specific gap might AI help address?
- Approval test: What would make an output usable, and what would rule it out?
Keeping this work human-led is consistent with the findings reported by Zhang et al. in a 2025 survey: artists emphasized human intervention for narrative coherence and stylistic control.

2. Build the visual plan and storyboard
Develop a treatment, mood references, and storyboard before generating shots. Adobe describes Firefly Boards as a way to create storyboards and align on a project’s visual direction before production. The storyboard should do more than establish a look: it should show why each shot exists and what visual information it must carry.
For each planned shot, specify the subject, framing, action, setting, and relationship to the shots around it. Note any visual references that should guide generation, along with details that must not change. A reference is a guide, not proof that a generated clip will reproduce its character, composition, or movement reliably.
Make continuity visible
- Record the characters’ appearance, wardrobe, props, and screen direction.
- Note the setting, lighting character, palette, and framing choices that carry across shots.
- Describe the action clearly enough to compare movement between takes or generations.
- Keep a short list of intentional exceptions, so an inconsistency is not mistaken for a creative choice.
Plan for iteration rather than expecting a first result to match the storyboard. In Zhang et al.’s 2025 survey, 110 artists rated choosing an appropriate video-generation tool 6.45 out of 7 for importance and generating multiple iterations 6.05 out of 7. In a separate survey of 100 artists, consistent character movement received an importance rating of 6.62 out of 7, while current tool performance on that task was rated 4.55 out of 7. These are self-reported ratings from surveyed artists, not objective product benchmarks or measurements of the whole film industry.

Choose AI for a defined job, not as a general-purpose “make my film” step. Potential uses include previsualization, placeholder imagery for a difficult-to-source shot, filling a production gap, or creating a specific element for the edit. Adobe describes examples such as a missing prop or a location that is unavailable within budget; those examples describe possible use cases, not a guarantee that generated imagery will match photographed footage.
Before you begin, write a task brief: what material you need, where it will be used, what reference inputs are allowed, what must stay consistent, and who has authority to accept or reject the result. Decide in advance whether the output is exploratory, a temporary editorial asset, or a candidate for the final film. That distinction helps keep placeholder work from silently becoming approved final work.
Compare tools against the actual task
There is no single best tool for every stage. Compare candidates on criteria that affect this production rather than treating a feature list as a ranking.
| Selection criterion | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Task fit | Does it address the specific need—storyboard, reference image, video, sound, or editing? |
| Continuity and motion | Can you direct and assess the character, setting, and movement consistency this scene requires? |
| Iteration and local editing | Can the team compare alternatives and refine a usable result rather than accept a single output? |
| Project integration | Can the result fit the edit and the production’s export requirements? |
| Rights | What terms apply to the model, your inputs, and the generated output? |
| Provenance and disclosure | Can you keep a useful record of how an asset was made and what went into it? |
| Cost and connectivity | Do credits, cost, and network requirements fit the schedule and budget? |
These criteria synthesize capabilities and artist-reported concerns discussed in Adobe documentation and Zhang et al.’s 2025 survey; they are not a comparative product test.
4. Generate, compare, and curate
In Adobe Premiere’s Generative Media Tool, editors can select a timeline range, enter a text prompt, optionally provide reference frames, and generate video clips or sound effects as editable clips. Treat each result as a candidate: compare it with the scene brief and neighboring shots, revise the prompt or references where useful, and generate alternatives when the first result misses the need.
Use an editorial review pass
- Check story fit: Does the clip communicate the intended beat and preserve the scene’s point of view?
- Check continuity: Compare faces, clothing, props, setting, screen direction, and movement with the storyboard and adjacent material.
- Check motion: Look for changes or artifacts that distract from the action or make a cut difficult.
- Check technical suitability: Confirm the result is usable in the edit and does not introduce a problem for the intended sequence or delivery.
- Choose, revise, or reject: Keep the candidate only if it meets the approval test; otherwise refine the prompt or references, try another iteration, or use another production approach.
Keep selection with the editor or designated creative lead. Generation can expand the set of options, but it does not decide which take best serves the story.

5. Edit for story, picture, and sound
Use the edit to make the film coherent, not merely to assemble generated outputs. Select takes for meaning and performance, control pacing, and check scene-to-scene continuity. Adobe describes Premiere’s generated video and sound effects as editable timeline clips, which supports treating them as material to shape in context rather than finished scenes that need no editorial judgment.
Give generated music a defined role
Adobe positions Premiere Generate Music for instrumental background, temporary tracks, and rough cuts. Its FAQ describes four variations for comparison and says generated assets are retained in a generation-history bin. Adobe also states the generated tracks are 48 kHz. Confirm current product terms and credits before relying on the feature for a release.

For an original score, artist collaboration, or signature soundtrack, Adobe says human musicians remain important; its FAQ describes Generate Music as a tool for editors, not a replacement for musicians. Licensed-music workflows remain supported.
A 2025 Zhang et al. analysis of MIT AI Film Hack projects found AI-generated music and sound effects in 12.5% of projects in 2023 and in over 50% in 2024 and 2025. Those figures apply to the projects analyzed in that study, not to film production industry-wide.
6. Check rights, permissions, and provenance
Keep a production record as assets are created and approved. Record the tool and model used, prompts and reference inputs, source footage and its permissions, performer approvals, retained generated assets, and meaningful human edits. This gives the team a traceable account of an asset’s origin and the decisions made about it.
Do not assume one provider’s content policy applies to another model. Adobe says its Firefly models are trained on licensed and public-domain content and that it does not train them on customer content. This is Adobe’s statement about its own approach, not a description of all generative models. Check the terms for the particular model and service being used, including the rights relevant to your intended production and distribution.

For a digital simulation of a person’s voice or likeness, establish the necessary permissions and agreements before use. SAG-AFTRA’s statement concerns its members and its union-contract position: it says an agreement to digitally simulate a member’s voice or likeness to create a new performance falls within that position, and advises members not to assign those rights without a basic minimum agreement with the union. It is union guidance, not a general legal ruling. Consult the applicable contract and qualified counsel for the production’s territory and circumstances.
7. Complete a final approval and delivery check
Before delivery, review the finished film against the intended story, technical requirements, and production records. The exact delivery specification depends on the project and distributor, so confirm it with the receiving party rather than assuming a generated asset or editing feature guarantees compliance.
- Confirm the selected shots support the story and the approved creative direction.
- Review continuity and movement across cuts, including any generated characters or effects.
- Check that sound choices serve the edit and that music and other assets have been cleared for their intended use.
- Verify performer permissions and relevant model, input, and output terms for retained material.
- Ensure the asset and approval records are complete enough for the production’s needs.
- Review the final export against the delivery requirements provided for the project.
The workflow is successful when AI has accelerated a defined task without taking control of the film’s story, continuity decisions, or final approval.
