Compare quieter streets and paths, check your bike and equipment, then ride the route once in daylight before making it part of your workweek. Start with one or two commute days—or a mixed-mode trip—and adjust as you learn what works for you.
Choose a route for comfort, not just distance
Your driving route may not be the best cycling route. A slightly longer trip on slower streets or a separated path may feel easier than a shorter route with fast traffic and complicated junctions. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends choosing routes with less traffic and slower speeds, and notes that a bike lane or path away from traffic may be the safest option. Cycling UK likewise describes options ranging from quiet routes to balanced and fastest routes.

Compare at least two candidates. Look beyond the distance estimate and check:
- Traffic: How fast and busy are the roads, and are there quieter alternatives?
- Facilities and junctions: Does the route use bike paths or lanes, and are crossings and turns manageable for you?
- Terrain and surface: Consider hills, rough surfaces, and any sections where you may need to slow down.
- Time and conditions: Estimate how long the ride will take at a comfortable pace; consider lighting and visibility at the time you expect to travel.
- Alternatives: Identify another route or a transit option in case of a closure or a difficult stretch.
Route planners can help you find possibilities, but a line on a map cannot tell you how a busy road or junction will feel in practice. Cycling UK explains that cycling routes can use quieter backstreets and facilities instead of the obvious motor route. See Cycling UK’s route-planning advice and its guidance on staying safe when riding to work.
#1 Best Overall
Rehearse before your first workday
Try the route on a daylight weekend before depending on it for a work arrival. Ride at a comfortable pace rather than racing the estimated time. Note the turns, crossings, surfaces, and any sections that feel stressful, then decide whether to change the route or practise a particular maneuver.
- Ride the candidate route when you have time to pause and reassess.
- Notice where you need extra time or confidence, especially at junctions and crossings.
- Choose a fallback route or a transit option before you need one.
- Revise your plan if the route feels uncomfortable; the shortest option is not compulsory.
If traffic handling is the main concern, practise away from traffic first, consider a cycling skills class, or ask a more experienced rider to accompany you. Local class availability varies.

Check your bike and prepare your gear
Before setting off, make sure the bicycle fits you and is in working order. NHTSA’s basic equipment check includes the brakes, tires, handlebars, and seat. Wear a correctly fitted helmet; check local law for helmet requirements. For riding at night or in poor visibility, use a white front light, a red rear light, and reflectors, and consider reflective clothing or accessories. Check local lighting rules as well. Bright or reflective gear can help others see you, but it cannot guarantee visibility in every situation.

Keep loose clothing and laces clear of the drivetrain. A lock is useful if you will leave the bike at work; waterproof luggage or clothing may help in rain, though conditions can make a ride unsuitable. Prepare clothes, food, and your bag the night before so the morning does not become a last-minute packing exercise.

Ride predictably and stay focused
On the road, travel in the same direction as traffic, obey signs and signals, and signal turns. Scan ahead for traffic and surface hazards, and ride in a predictable way. Avoid phone use and headphones that take your attention away from traffic. Visibility equipment is only one part of a safer ride; your positioning and attention matter too.
For context, NHTSA reports that 1,103 bicyclists were killed in traffic crashes in the United States in 2024. That national count is not an estimate of your personal risk, and route planning alone cannot prevent every crash. Use it as a reason to plan carefully, not as a prediction about any individual commute. See NHTSA’s bicycle-safety guidance.

Make arrival part of the plan
Before your first ride, check what the workplace offers and decide how you will handle the practical details:
- Where can you lock the bicycle securely?
- Is there a place to store a change of clothes, or a shower if you want one?
- How will you carry a laptop, lunch, and any work essentials?
- What will you do if the weather changes or rain makes the ride unsuitable?
Plan the routine around the facilities you actually have. If a full ride both ways feels like too much at first, try a shorter or quieter route, commute one or two days per week, or combine cycling with transit. These are flexible ways to build a routine, not rules about how quickly you should progress.

Check local rules before you ride
Helmet, lighting, and sidewalk rules vary by location. The guidance here draws on U.S. federal advice and UK cycling guidance; it does not establish the law where you live. Check your local transport authority or applicable law for requirements, especially before riding at night or using a sidewalk.
