Start with the event organizer’s current closure map, then check the city or transport authority’s notice for the same event date. Compare affected streets and closure times with your whole trip, choose a route or travel mode that avoids restricted areas, and check the official updates again before leaving. Leave extra time and follow signs, barriers and staff directions: a map or navigation app cannot authorize entry to a closed road.
Find the current notice for the exact event and date
Search the official event website for its traffic, transport or road-closures page. Use the map or leaflet for the edition you are travelling on; a route and its restrictions can change from year to year. Then cross-check the city or transport authority’s notice, which may list local access rules and diversions beyond the course itself.

For example, the London Marathon Events road-closures page provides closure information, resident-area details, vehicle-crossing information and a leaflet for 2026. The Chicago Marathon street-closures page directs readers to the course map and Chicago OEMC event notifications for its 2026 event. These are event-specific examples, not interchangeable closure plans.
Check the whole journey, including times and access
Do not plan from the race-course line alone. Identify which streets your trip uses and compare them with closure start times, expected reopening times and any setup or parking restrictions. Check connecting roads, official crossing points, access to your destination and nearby bus diversions. Some arrangements close roads in phases or include named detours, so a street just off the course may still affect your trip.

Official notices illustrate why checking both place and time matters: the City of Boston’s 2026 Boston Marathon traffic advisory gives municipal restrictions and a map, while the Hong Kong Government’s January 12, 2026 traffic and transport arrangements describe affected route sections, phased closures and diversions. Their details apply to those events and dates only.
Choose a travel mode, then compare workable options
If you can, decide whether to travel by rail or other public transit before choosing a driving detour. Rail may remain practical near a course even when buses are diverted, but check the transit operator’s event-day notices separately. The Copenhagen Marathon traffic page advises avoiding the course where possible, points to metro, S-train and regional trains, and notes that buses may be affected.

If you must drive, use the official map to check restrictions along the entire route, not just at the race crossing. The Copenhagen organizer puts it plainly: “If you must drive on race day please use the course map to view all traffic restrictions on your route.” Consider each realistic option against these factors:
- Whether it crosses a closed road or uses an official crossing point.
- Whether your travel time falls within the closure window or near a stated reopening.
- Transit availability and diversions, especially the difference between bus and rail services.
- Access to your final destination and any parking restrictions.
- The chance of queues or delays on nearby roads.
These are practical checks, not a universal ranking of routes. The best option depends on the event’s current restrictions and your destination.

Recheck before departure and obey live controls
- Open the organizer’s event page and the relevant city or transport authority notice shortly before leaving; look for updates to the map, closure times or diversions.
- Check the transit operator’s notices too if using public transport, particularly for bus changes.
- Allow extra time, especially if travelling through or near the event area.
- At the scene, follow posted signs, variable message boards, barriers, police, stewards and traffic controllers. Do not enter a closed road because a navigation app routes you there or runners have passed.
Roads may reopen in stages, and barriers can remain until officials consider traffic safe. The organizer’s map helps with planning, but live controls determine where you may travel.
Why the official notice takes priority
Closure hours, reopening times, crossing arrangements and service changes are specific to an event edition and can be revised. The Copenhagen Marathon says roads may reopen in stages; Chicago and Boston also direct travellers to current information and posted instructions. Treat a map as a planning aid, not a guarantee that a road will be open at a particular moment.
There is no single closure rule that applies to races everywhere: the examples above cover Copenhagen, Chicago, Boston, London and Hong Kong, and their arrangements differ. Use the notice for your city, event, date and travel mode.
