Turn on Prefer fuel-efficient routes in the Google Maps mobile app, choose the engine type that best matches your vehicle, then compare the efficient route with the fastest option and its estimated arrival time. Google Maps weighs estimated fuel or energy efficiency alongside traffic, road conditions and route simplicity; the efficient route may take longer.
Turn on fuel-efficient routing

Open the Google Maps app on your phone or tablet.

Tap your profile picture or initial, then go to Settings > Navigation.

Go to Settings > Your vehicles and choose the engine type that most closely matches your vehicle.

Enter your destination and request driving directions. If Maps offers alternatives, compare the green-leaf route with the fastest route and check the estimated arrival times. The feature is available only in selected countries or regions. Google’s help page does not provide a complete current list, so the setting may not appear for every user or location. The desktop directions page explains how to view alternate routes but does not document this eco-routing setting for computers. Choose the vehicle profile that fits
The engine setting affects which route Maps identifies as efficient. Use the closest available match rather than treating the green leaf as a vehicle-specific measurement.

Petrol/gas or diesel: select the corresponding fuel for an internal-combustion car.

Hybrid: choose this for a hybrid or plug-in hybrid that mostly runs on fuel.

Electric: choose this for an electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid that mostly runs on electricity.

Motorcycle: Google currently assumes a petrol/gas-powered motorcycle; its engine-type setting applies to cars.

Google gives broad examples of why routes may differ: diesel vehicles can have a relative fuel-economy advantage on motorways or highways, while hybrids and EVs can be more efficient in stop-start city driving and on hills because of regenerative braking. These are general tendencies, not guarantees for a particular vehicle or journey. Google Maps Help: Use eco-friendly routes
Why the fuel-efficient route may take longer
With the preference on, Maps considers efficiency along with live traffic, route simplicity and road conditions. When there is more than one option, it can highlight the most efficient route as well as the fastest. Google says it recommends the efficient route when its arrival time is roughly the same as the fastest route; when savings are small or the time increase is significant, Maps may show relative fuel or energy savings to help you compare. With the preference off, Maps recommends the fastest route, but it may still mark the most efficient alternative with a green leaf based on the selected engine type. The leaf is therefore a relative route comparison, not a promise that a trip will use a particular amount less fuel. Google Maps Help: Use eco-friendly routes

Google says its fuel- and energy-efficiency estimates use information from the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and data from the European Environment Agency. Factors include average vehicle consumption in the region, hill steepness, stop-start traffic patterns and road types such as local roads and motorways. Google also considers live traffic, route simplicity and road conditions. It does not publish a universal conversion from the route comparison into guaranteed liters, gallons or money saved, or a numeric real-world savings guarantee. To decide whether the alternative suits this trip, compare its arrival time and any displayed relative savings, then consider the route’s roads, hills and current traffic. A route that looks more efficient in Maps can still be a poor choice for your schedule or circumstances.
Plan EV charging separately
Google explicitly says energy-efficient EV routes do not include charging stops. If the trip needs charging, plan those stops separately and confirm the route and range work for your vehicle. Google Maps Help: Use eco-friendly routes
Google’s vehicle-profile help describes additional EV features for compatible vehicle profiles, including charging-station filtering and battery predictions. Those predictions depend on the vehicle information supplied and do not adjust to live driving conditions, so they are not a substitute for checking the trip against your actual battery, conditions and charging needs.
