Solar panels alone generally will not keep a home powered during a utility outage. Backup requires an inverter that can operate independently of the grid, stored energy, and equipment that isolates the home from utility lines. A grid-connected system with battery backup is also different from a fully off-grid system; the right design depends on what you want to power and for how long.
What does a home solar-and-battery system need?
A typical system combines equipment that generates, manages, stores, and converts electricity. The exact arrangement depends on whether the home stays connected to the utility and whether backup is intended for selected circuits or the entire house.

| Component | What it does | What to check when planning |
|---|---|---|
| PV modules | Convert sunlight into direct-current (DC) electricity. | Available roof or ground area, shading, orientation, slope, and structural suitability affect production. |
| Mounting and racking | Secure the modules to a roof or ground structure. | Confirm the structure is suitable and that the installation meets local requirements. |
| Charge controller | Regulates charging from the PV array to help protect battery health. | Confirm compatibility with the array and battery equipment. |
| Battery bank | Stores energy for use when solar production is low or unavailable. | Compare usable energy, operating limits, chemistry, temperature requirements, and manufacturer compatibility. |
| Inverter | Converts DC electricity to alternating-current (AC) electricity for ordinary household loads. | For backup, it must support the intended independent or islanded operating mode as well as the loads it will serve. |
| Transfer or isolation equipment | Separates the home’s backup system from utility lines when operating independently. | Confirm the approved isolation method and whether backup serves the whole home or selected circuits. |
| Optional backup source | A generator or another source can provide energy when stored solar energy is insufficient. | Check whether the system supports the source and how it is intended to operate with the other equipment. |
DOE’s Solar and Resilience Basics puts the outage issue plainly: “Technically, residential solar panels alone are not enough to make your home resilient.” Panels generate power, but a conventional grid-connected inverter generally shuts down during an outage to avoid energizing utility lines. Independent operation requires equipment designed for that mode and a safe way to isolate the home from the grid.

No. A grid-connected home with batteries can still use utility service when available; a fully off-grid home is designed to operate without it. Do not describe one as the other: they serve different needs and require different system planning.

| Configuration | Relationship to the utility | What it means for an outage |
|---|---|---|
| Grid-tied solar without storage | The home remains connected to the utility. | Panels alone generally do not provide household power during an outage. |
| Grid-tied solar with battery backup | The home remains connected to the utility when it is available. | Suitable inverter and isolation equipment can let the system serve backup loads independently. A critical-load panel may mean only selected circuits receive power. |
| Off-grid solar and storage | The system is designed to run without utility service. | Generation, storage, and loads must be planned around periods with little or no solar production; an optional generator or other backup source may also be used. |
How should you decide what the system must power?
Start with the job you need the system to do, not a generic “whole-house” capacity. A system meant to shift some daytime solar energy into evening use has a different target from one intended to keep essential circuits running through a prolonged outage or to operate without the grid.
- Choose the operating goal. Decide whether you want to use stored solar after sunset, cover short outages, support selected essential circuits for longer outages, or operate fully off-grid.
- List the loads. Record the appliances and circuits you want backed up, how much electricity they use, and when they run. Separate essential loads from optional ones and identify equipment with high starting or surge demand.
- Check simultaneous demand. Consider which loads may run at the same time. Compare that demand with the inverter’s continuous and surge power ratings; battery energy capacity alone does not establish that the inverter can run a particular combination of equipment.
- Estimate energy over time. Compare the loads’ energy use with usable battery energy and expected solar production. Account for the timing of use and periods when sunlight is limited. A PVWatts estimate can help estimate solar production for an address, but it does not by itself establish the performance of a complete off-grid system.
- Verify the equipment as a system. Check battery charge and discharge limits, inverter operating modes, PV input limits, temperature requirements, and the manufacturers’ compatibility information. Also consider monitoring, service, warranty, expandability, and replacement availability.
- Confirm local approval requirements. Ask the local authority having jurisdiction and utility what permits, inspections, interconnection steps, and qualifications apply before choosing equipment or starting work.
How long can a home battery run the house?
There is no responsible runtime estimate without the system’s usable stored energy, available solar generation, and the amount and timing of household use. A battery shifts energy from one time to another; it does not create energy. Running fewer loads changes how quickly stored energy is used, while weak solar production can limit how much energy is replenished.

When reviewing a proposed system, distinguish battery energy capacity from the inverter’s ability to supply power at a particular moment. Ask for an estimate based on your actual loads and the conditions assumed, such as whether solar is expected to recharge the battery during the period. A single runtime number without those assumptions can be misleading.

What happens when the battery is depleted?
Battery limits and inverter behavior govern what happens when stored energy runs low. Some systems may shut down at a low-voltage cutoff. Whether morning solar can then recharge the batteries and restart the system without an AC grid signal depends on the exact inverter, battery, and system configuration. This feature is often called black-start capability; verify it in the manuals for the specific equipment rather than assuming it is available.

- Ask the local authority having jurisdiction which building, electrical, fire, and storage rules are currently adopted for your site. Model codes and example code editions do not establish what applies locally.
- Ask the utility about interconnection procedures and requirements for equipment that operates alongside the grid.
- Confirm isolation and circuit coverage with the system designer. Backup equipment must prevent unintended backfeed to utility lines; a critical-load subpanel can limit backup to selected circuits.
- Check qualifications. Licensing requirements vary by state. DOE identifies NABCEP as a voluntary credentialing program, not a substitute for applicable state or local requirements.
- Review the exact manuals and listings. Confirm compatibility, installation location, temperature limits, operating modes, and maintenance requirements for the chosen equipment.
Do you need a battery with solar?
Not necessarily. If the goal is to generate solar electricity while the utility is available, a battery may not be required. If the goal is to use solar energy later or keep some loads running during an outage, storage and equipment designed for independent operation are needed. The economics of a grid-connected system also depend on electricity use, system size and production, utility rates, roof sunlight and orientation, and how the utility compensates exported power; there is no universal savings or payback figure.
