How to Place an Image on the Screen with HTML or JavaScript Canvas

Use an HTML img element for ordinary page content. For a game scene, load images and draw the background before the foreground on a canvas.

For an ordinary webpage image, add an HTML <img> element inside the page body. For a game scene where a car sits over a street background, draw both images onto a <canvas> with JavaScript: load the background first, then draw the car at its coordinates. An HTML tag placed inside a JavaScript function is not valid JavaScript.

Choose HTML or canvas based on what you are building

Approach Use it for Where the code goes
HTML <img> An image displayed as regular page content In the HTML document body
Canvas drawImage() A composed scene, such as a background with a car positioned over it JavaScript that draws to a canvas element

These approaches solve different problems. An <img> is the simplest choice when the image is just part of the page. Canvas is useful when your code needs to position and redraw multiple images as one scene.

Display an image with an HTML element

Put the image element in the document body, not inside a JavaScript function:

<img src="Ballistic.jpg" alt="A car on a street" width="300" height="200">

The src value must point to a file the browser can load. In this example, Ballistic.jpg assumes the image is reachable at that relative path from the page. The alt text describes the image for readers who cannot see it, and the width and height set its displayed dimensions.

An <img> element does not need a closing </img> tag. If it does not appear, check that the file name, capitalization, extension, and location match the path in src. Also check the browser’s developer tools for a failed image request; the SitePoint discussion does not establish why the original poster’s local image failed.

Draw a background and car on a canvas

For a street scene with a car positioned on top, create a canvas and use JavaScript to draw each image. The canvas must be present in the HTML:

<canvas id="scene" width="600" height="400"></canvas>

Then load the images and draw them after they finish loading. This example scales the background to fit the canvas and places a smaller car image over it:

document.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded", () => {
  const canvas = document.getElementById("scene");
  const context = canvas.getContext("2d");

  const background = new Image();
  background.src = "street.jpg";

  background.onload = () => {
    const scale = canvas.width / background.naturalWidth;
    const backgroundHeight = background.naturalHeight * scale;

    context.drawImage(background, 0, 0, canvas.width, backgroundHeight);

    const car = new Image();
    car.src = "car.png";

    car.onload = () => {
      const x = 250;
      const y = 250;
      const carWidth = 80;
      const carHeight = 50;

      context.drawImage(car, x, y, carWidth, carHeight);
    };
  };
});

Change the file paths and dimensions to match your assets and canvas. The background is drawn first; drawing the car afterward puts it in front. The example preserves the background’s aspect ratio by calculating its displayed height from its natural dimensions. If that height is larger than the canvas, part of the image extends beyond the visible area; adjust the scaling or positioning to suit your scene.

Why an image tag inside a JavaScript function fails

HTML markup belongs in the HTML document. A JavaScript function body must contain JavaScript statements, so typing <img src="..."> directly inside it will not display an image. In a canvas scene, JavaScript creates an image object with new Image() and asks the canvas context to draw it with drawImage(). For regular page content, place the <img> in the HTML instead.

What this does—and does not—do for movement

The canvas example demonstrates image loading, layering, and drawing at chosen coordinates. It does not implement arrow-key input or a continuous game loop. To move the car, separate JavaScript must update its x- and y-coordinates in response to keyboard input and redraw the scene; the background should be drawn again before the car each time. The SitePoint thread describes that later goal but does not supply the movement code.
