For better whole-home Wi-Fi, start by placing your Wi-Fi 7 router in an open, central spot, elevated above the floor and away from major obstacles. Then test signal and real performance in the rooms where you use Wi-Fi. If one area remains weak, a compatible mesh point may help—but only if it can keep a strong connection back to the router.
Where should you put a Wi-Fi 7 router?
Place it as near the middle of your home as the modem connection allows. Choose an open shelf or TV stand rather than the floor, a closet, a cabinet, or a corner. A central location helps avoid sending much of the signal outside the home or into the ground, as Ofcom’s Wi-Fi guidance explains.

Keep the router away from large obstructions, especially metal objects, and avoid placing it behind furniture. The fewer walls and obstacles between the router and the device, the better the odds of a strong connection. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance recommends moving an access point toward the middle of a home or room and raising it when possible.

Work around the modem connection
The modem or incoming broadband line may limit where the router can go. Start with the most central open location the cable permits; do not assume that a specific room, shelf height, or distance from a wall is best for every home. Building materials, layout, router antennas, client devices, and nearby interference all affect results.

Try antenna orientations, not a universal formula
If your router has adjustable antennas, try pointing them in different directions. Ofcom suggests orienting multiple aerials in different directions, such as vertically and horizontally. Follow your router’s documentation for model-specific recommendations; there is no single antenna angle or height that suits all devices and homes.
How do Wi-Fi 7 bands affect placement?
Wi-Fi bands involve a range-versus-throughput trade-off. The general tendencies below are not guarantees for a particular router, room, or client device.

| Band | General tendency | Placement implication |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Longer range and better wall penetration, but slower and often more congested. | May be more useful for distant or obstructed devices, depending on interference and device support. |
| 5 GHz | Typically faster than 2.4 GHz, with shorter range and weaker obstacle penetration. | Performance can fall as the path to the device crosses more walls or distance. |
| 6 GHz | Can provide very fast throughput close to the router, but has shorter range and weaker wall penetration. | For distant or obstructed clients, check whether 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz provides a more usable connection. |
Wi-Fi 7 supports 320 MHz channel width in 6 GHz and Multi-Link Operation (MLO), but those features do not overcome physical obstacles. Cisco describes 320 MHz as twice the capacity of a 160 MHz channel; that is a channel-capacity comparison, not a promise that your internet speed will double. Benefits depend on compatible client devices and actual link conditions. See Cisco’s Wi-Fi 7 overview.
Not every device supports 6 GHz, 320 MHz channels, or MLO. Actual speed and latency also depend on signal strength, interference, channel width, and device specifications. ASUS notes that 6 GHz support varies with regional rules and advises trying 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz when a distant or obstructed 6 GHz client has a weak signal: ASUS Wi-Fi 7 guidance. Check your country’s rules and your equipment’s documentation before relying on a particular band or feature.

How to test coverage and performance at home
- Choose a reasonable starting location. Put the router in the most central open spot allowed by the modem connection, elevated above the floor and away from major obstructions.
- Test where Wi-Fi matters. Use the router’s measurement tools, if available, or a Wi-Fi analyzer to check signal in the rooms where you work, call, play, or stream. Also check actual performance on the devices you use there; a strong signal indicator alone does not establish that the connection is fast or reliable.
- Separate weak signal from other problems. If performance is poor, consider whether the issue is weak coverage, channel congestion, interference, or a limitation of the client device. Microsoft advises checking performance in different locations before choosing a channel and notes that channel changes cannot make a weak signal reliable. Channel width and device orientation can also be worth checking.
- Change one thing, then test again. Move the router or adjust antenna orientation and repeat the checks in the same rooms. This makes it easier to see whether a change actually helped.
There is no dependable universal placement distance or guaranteed speed: results depend on the home’s size, construction, layout, the locations where Wi-Fi is used, and the equipment involved. Google describes router and mesh-point placement as an inexact process and recommends retesting after moving points: Google Nest’s placement guidance.
When should you add a mesh point or extender?
Consider extra equipment only after testing the router in a sensible location. For a persistent weak area, put a compatible mesh point partway between the router and that area, in an open spot where it can still maintain a strong connection to the router. Placing a node inside the dead zone may leave it with a weak connection of its own. After setup, check its connection or backhaul quality and adjust its position if needed.

A mesh system may suit several weak rooms or a broader whole-home coverage gap; an extender may suit a single targeted weak spot. The right choice depends on the number and location of weak rooms, the quality of the added device’s link back to the router, compatibility, and how easily you can test and manage the setup. Neither option guarantees a particular speed. Google provides mesh placement guidance, while TP-Link’s guidance describes mesh and extenders as options for different coverage needs. Verify that any mesh point or extender works with your installed router and meets your system requirements.

Placement is only one possible cause. Congestion, interference, channel selection, channel width, or the capabilities of the connected device can limit performance even when signal strength looks good. Check performance in more than one location and with the intended device before changing settings. A wider channel is not automatically better, and changing channels will not fix a weak signal. For multi-access-point or high-density installations, coverage and capacity need to be planned together; closely spaced access points can create co-channel interference. HPE Aruba’s advice on access-point design principles is aimed at enterprise deployments, so it should not be treated as a simple home-placement rule.
