The best mobile broadband plan is the one that works where you need it, fits your data use and costs less over your actual period of use—not necessarily the one with the biggest allowance or lowest advertised monthly price. First check local 4G or 5G coverage, then choose between a data SIM, USB dongle or Wi-Fi hotspot and compare the full cost and terms.
Choose the connection format that fits your devices
Mobile broadband uses a data SIM to connect to a mobile network. The SIM plan and the device are separate decisions: buying a dongle or hotspot does not automatically provide data.

| Format | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Data SIM in a cellular laptop or tablet | A device with a built-in cellular modem and SIM slot. | Confirm the device supports the network technology and SIM format used by the plan. |
| USB dongle | One computer that needs a direct mobile connection. | Confirm compatibility with your computer and that the dongle supports current 4G or 5G service. |
| Mobile Wi-Fi hotspot (MiFi) | Several devices, or a laptop or tablet without a built-in cellular modem. | Check how many devices it can serve and whether its network bands and SIM are compatible. The hotspot shares its cellular connection over Wi-Fi. |
Three describes its 4G/5G MiFi devices as pocket-sized routers, while Vodafone distinguishes a dongle for a laptop or PC from a hotspot that connects multiple devices (Three; Vodafone).
Check coverage where you will use it
National coverage figures are useful context, not a prediction of reception in a particular room, building or stretch of road. Ofcom’s Spring 2026 Connected Nations update reports coverage as of January 2026: good 4G geographic coverage from all mobile network operators across 84% of UK landmass; predicted 4G coverage from at least one operator across 96%; and outside-premises 5G coverage ranging from 76% to 94% by operator (Ofcom).

- Check the intended home, workplace and travel areas using the operator’s coverage map or Ofcom’s coverage checker.
- Where possible, test the network with a low-commitment option before taking a longer contract or buying a bundled device.
- Check the exact device’s network compatibility as well as signal coverage; a plan cannot make an incompatible device work.
Ofcom says UK operators have completed their 3G switch-offs, so a 3G-only dongle is not suitable for current UK service (Ofcom). Choose equipment that supports 4G or 5G.
Match the data allowance to your use
Estimate monthly use across every device that will share the connection. Video calls, streaming, software updates and multiple users can consume data quickly, so an allowance that suits occasional browsing may not suit remote work or regular video. Compare your likely usage with the plan’s allowance and check exactly what happens when it runs out: the provider might restrict access, offer add-ons, charge for extra use or renew data on a schedule.

Plan ranges and restrictions are provider- and product-specific. Three’s June 2026 mobile broadband price guide lists options from 2GB through unlimited on selected packages and describes a 1,000GB cap intended to identify commercial use. These are examples, not standard rules across the market (Three). Check the current terms for the precise plan you are considering, including any fair-use rules.

Compare the full cost and commitment
Short-term and longer plans serve different needs. Three lists no-commitment PAYG data SIMs as well as 1-, 12- and 24-month mobile broadband plans. Vodafone lists 30-day, 12-month and 24-month choices. EE publishes mobile broadband plans and separate data SIM and Wi-Fi terms. Availability and terms can change, so check the live offer and linked contract documents before signing up (EE; Three; Vodafone).

Compare the total you expect to pay for the period you will use the service, not just the first monthly charge. Include the device’s upfront or monthly cost, minimum term, early termination charges, any change after a promotion, scheduled price rises and charges for use beyond the allowance.
Price-adjustment terms vary and may change. Vodafone’s page displays 24-month hotspot and dongle plans with scheduled rises in 2027 and 2028. EE says plan prices increase annually after the minimum term. Three’s June 2026 guide says its monthly charge increases by 4.5% each April. Treat these as terms of the cited offers and documents, not universal market rules, and verify the current wording and amounts before purchase (Vodafone; EE; Three).

Check roaming and inactivity rules separately
A domestic data allowance does not necessarily apply in the same way abroad. Three’s published terms say selected plans allow up to 12GB in listed Go Roam destinations, subject to conditions and eligibility; other plans may differ (Three). Before travelling, check that your specific plan includes the destination, the roaming allowance and any extra charges or fair-use conditions.
PAYG data packs can also have expiry or inactivity rules. Three’s data-only PAYG page says packs are time-limited and an unused SIM is deactivated after 18 months. Check the exact pack’s validity and the provider’s current inactivity terms if you expect to use the SIM intermittently (Three).

Use this checklist before choosing
- Will the network provide usable 4G or 5G coverage at your actual locations?
- Do you need a SIM for a cellular device, a USB dongle for one computer, or a hotspot to connect several devices?
- Does your equipment support the plan’s network technology and SIM format?
- Is the allowance adequate for your devices and activities, and what happens when it is exhausted?
- What is the total expected cost, including device payments, scheduled rises and out-of-allowance charges?
- Does the contract length and cancellation policy suit how long you need the connection?
- If you will travel abroad, are your destinations and likely usage covered by the plan’s roaming terms?
