FAT32 is mainly useful when a particular device requires it, and it cannot store a single file at or above 4 GiB. If you need to write to the drive from both Windows and Mac, consider exFAT: macOS can read NTFS but does not write to it by default, and Apple recommends exFAT for Windows-compatible volumes larger than 32 GB. Back up the drive before formatting; formatting erases its files.
How to choose between FAT32 and NTFS
- Windows only: Choose NTFS for general-purpose storage, particularly if you need files larger than 4 GiB or NTFS features such as access-control lists, file-system encryption, built-in compression, or metadata-only journaling. Microsoft lists those features for NTFS, not FAT32. Microsoft’s file-system comparison
- Windows and Mac, with writing from both: Consider exFAT rather than FAT32 or NTFS. Apple identifies exFAT as Windows-compatible and recommends it for Windows-compatible volumes above 32 GB in its Disk Utility instructions. That recommendation does not guarantee support on every other device. Apple’s Disk Utility formatting guide
- A device or application specifically requires FAT32: Use its stated format requirement, after checking the documentation for your exact model. Support varies, so do not assume a television, console, camera, router, or other device accepts a particular file system.
- You need to keep files already on the drive: Copy them to a separate location before formatting. Apple states, “Formatting a disk or volume erases all the files on it.”
What FAT32 and NTFS can store
The clearest practical difference is the maximum size of one file. Microsoft documents FAT32’s maximum file size as 4 GiB. A file that is 4 GiB or larger therefore cannot be stored intact on a FAT32 volume. NTFS supports much larger files, although the limits supported by Windows depend on the Windows version and volume configuration.

Microsoft’s comparison lists a maximum NTFS file size of 264−1 bytes. Its separate NTFS overview describes a maximum volume and file size of 8 PB for Windows 10 version 1709 and later, and Windows Server 2019 and later, with 2,048 KB clusters. These are configuration-specific limits, not a guarantee that every Windows system can create or use a volume of that size. Microsoft’s NTFS overview
File-system differences that affect everyday use
| Question | FAT32 | NTFS | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can it store a single file of 4 GiB or more? | No. Microsoft’s documented maximum file size is 4 GiB. Microsoft | Yes, within the applicable Windows and volume limits. Microsoft’s published maximums vary by configuration. Microsoft | For large video files, disk images, or other large files, FAT32’s limit may rule it out. |
| Does it provide the listed Windows file-system features? | Microsoft’s comparison does not list metadata-only journaling, access-control lists, file-system encryption, or built-in compression for FAT32. Microsoft | Microsoft lists metadata-only journaling, access-control lists, file-system encryption, and built-in compression for NTFS. Microsoft | Choose NTFS if you need these Windows-specific capabilities. |
| Can a Mac write to it by default? | Apple lists MS-DOS (FAT) as Windows-compatible. Apple | No. Apple says macOS may read NTFS volumes but does not write to them by default. Apple Support | If you need native Mac writing, NTFS is not the straightforward choice. |
| What does Apple recommend for Windows-compatible formatting? | MS-DOS (FAT) for volumes of 32 GB or less. Apple | NTFS is not writable by macOS by default. Apple | Apple’s Disk Utility guide recommends exFAT above 32 GB. Check requirements for any other device that will use the drive. |
Can a Mac write to NTFS?
Not by default. Apple says a Mac may read an NTFS-formatted drive but does not write to it by default. If you need to save or change files from both Windows and macOS, exFAT is a practical alternative identified by Apple as Windows-compatible. Apple’s size guidance is specific to Disk Utility: MS-DOS (FAT) for Windows-compatible volumes at or below 32 GB, and exFAT above 32 GB. This is not a compatibility guarantee for every operating system or device.

Before you format the drive
- Copy any files you want to keep to another drive or storage location.
- Check the exact requirements of every computer or device that will use the drive, especially older or specialized equipment.
- Choose the file system based on the largest individual files you need to store and whether the drive must accept writes from a Mac.
- Format only after confirming you selected the intended disk or volume. Formatting erases the files on the selected disk or volume.
