Photograph wallpaper in three complementary views: a straight-on image that shows enough of the pattern to understand its repeat, a close-up that reveals the finish, and a room-context image that helps shoppers judge scale. Keep lighting and camera settings consistent across colorways, use a gray card as a white-balance reference, and state the repeat, match type, colorway, and finish in the listing. A photo can help shoppers assess appearance, but it cannot guarantee identical color on every screen or in every room.
Prepare the sample and camera
Use a clean, flat sample or representative panel. Remove distracting objects, smooth out folds where possible, and make sure the design is not hidden or cut off unintentionally. Preserve the material’s natural surface rather than flattening or altering it to make the image look more uniform.

A phone or camera can work. Choose a setup that lets you keep the camera steady, focus on the printed surface, and repeat the same lighting and white-balance approach for related images. A tripod and diffused light are optional aids, not requirements.

Make a straight-on design view
For the main design image, position the camera square to the sample, with the camera sensor parallel to its surface. This practical alignment helps prevent motifs from looking skewed. Keep the relevant sample area in frame and focus on the printed surface. There is no established universal camera angle or listing-photo alignment standard for wallpaper, so treat this as a way to make the image easier to interpret, not a marketplace compliance rule.

Show enough area to explain the repeat
A tight crop may make an attractive motif detail but conceal how the pattern repeats. Include enough of the design to show a complete motif or repeat when the sample allows. The Wallcoverings Association notes that most wallpapers, except some textures and murals, have a pattern repeat. It defines vertical repeat as the distance from a point in the design to the next identical point vertically. If your photo is only a crop and does not show the full repeat, label it as a crop rather than implying it represents the whole layout.
Repeat and matching information help buyers understand how adjacent strips relate. Straight-drop wallpaper aligns at the same point across adjoining panels; a half-drop design offsets every other panel by half the vertical repeat. State the listed repeat and match type when known instead of expecting shoppers to infer them from one image.

Add a texture detail and a room-context view
Use a separate close-up to show texture, sheen, or embossing. A flat image cannot fully communicate tactile qualities, so describe the finish in the listing text as well. A room-context image serves a different purpose: it helps a shopper imagine scale and styling, but should not replace the straight-on design image.

Keep colorway photos consistent
Changing light sources or camera settings between colorway shots can introduce differences that look like product-color changes. Avoid combining window daylight with household lamps of a different color in the same setup. Photograph related samples under the same illumination and use consistent exposure and white-balance settings.

A neutral gray card photographed under the same light can provide a white-balance reference in your camera or editing software. It is a practical reference, not a screen-calibration system and not a guarantee that every display will show the same color.
Make restrained edits: correct white balance and exposure consistently, but do not recolor the wallpaper or erase visible texture. Keep an untouched original and inspect the exported images to make sure edits have not shifted the color or softened the surface detail.

Build an image set around buyer questions

These views complement one another; there is no single image that communicates repeat, surface, and room scale equally well. Include the pattern repeat, match type, colorway, pattern number, and finish in the listing where those details are available. A pattern number identifies a design and colorway; a dye-lot or run number identifies rolls printed in the same print run. Different run numbers may reflect tonal or manufacturing variation, so do not imply that separate lots will look identical.

Light in the room, photography, and a shopper’s monitor can all affect how wallpaper appears. A product-image disclaimer in a Kelly Wearstler wallpaper specification sheet puts it this way: “This image is for illustrative purposes only. The colors shown are accurate within the constraints of lighting, photography and the color accuracy of your monitor.” Use a similarly restrained note if useful, without suggesting that the image is a color guarantee.

Encourage shoppers to consider a physical sample when exact in-room color or tactile feel matters. Seller guidance from Spoonflower recommends assessing samples in the intended room across daylight and evening lighting, checking pattern dimensions, and evaluating texture. A listing photograph is a visual aid, not a substitute for seeing and touching the material in every buyer’s own setting.
Check marketplace image rules before uploading
Marketplace image requirements vary by platform and category, and no universal wallpaper-specific pixel size, crop, or required image sequence is established here. An older Amazon lighting-category guide calls for color images, the complete product, a simple clean background ideally pure white, and only items included in the offer. That is category guidance, not a wallpaper-specific or guaranteed-current rule. Check the current requirements for the marketplace and category where you list before uploading.
