Yes—Indian travellers can pay by UPI at participating merchants in Qatar, but acceptance is not universal. Enable UPI Global or International in an eligible UPI app, confirm that the specific merchant accepts it, then scan its QR code and check the QAR and INR totals, conversion rate and any fee before authorizing. NPCI’s general limit for ordinary UPI payments is up to ₹1 lakh per transaction; the official material reviewed does not specify a Qatar-specific merchant-payment cap.
Where UPI works in Qatar
UPI in Qatar is a merchant acceptance service, not a promise that every shop or QR code will work. The payment must go through a participating merchant network. Look for a BHIM UPI or partner-network acceptance mark and ask the cashier about that particular location before opening the scanner. An arbitrary QR code or one belonging to Qatar’s local wallet system should not be assumed to accept Indian UPI. The rollout announcements establish specific milestones, not universal coverage. On 11 July 2024, QNB and NPCI International announced an agreement to bring QR-based UPI payments to Qatar through QNB’s merchant network, with planned coverage described across retail, tourist attractions, leisure sites, duty-free shops and hotels. On 25 February 2025, QNB said it was the first bank in Qatar to enable UPI acceptance for merchants it acquired. QNB reported on 22 September 2025 that acceptance was available through POS terminals for QNB-acquired merchants and identified Qatar Duty Free as the first live merchant. That does not establish that every Qatar Duty Free outlet currently accepts UPI. NPCI International’s QNB announcement and QNB’s September 2025 update provide those dated details.

Set up UPI before you pay
For an Indian bank account and domestic mobile number
- Use a UPI-powered app and bank account that support international merchant payments. Check the app or bank’s current eligibility terms.
- In the app, find and activate UPI Global or UPI International for the bank account you intend to use. The exact menu name and availability vary by app.
- Make sure you can access the app and authorize payments while travelling. Follow your bank’s instructions for any required device, SIM or security checks.
NPCI’s international acceptance guidance describes activating the service in a supported UPI app. It does not make every app or account eligible.
If you use an international mobile number as an NRI
NPCI says the international number must be linked to the bank account, and onboarding must be through a UPI app that supports international numbers. Qatar’s +974 country code appears on NPCI’s supported-country list. The participating bank and app lists are indicators of support, not a guarantee that every account or transaction will work; the bank’s terms apply. Pay by scanning the merchant QR
- Confirm the location accepts UPI. Look for the relevant UPI or network-partner mark and ask the cashier before scanning.
- Scan the merchant’s QR using the international payment option in your UPI app. Check that the recipient or merchant name matches the business.
- Review the payment preview. Check the final amount in Qatari riyals (QAR) and Indian rupees (INR), the displayed exchange rate and any fee, as well as the INR amount to be debited.
- Authorize only if the details are right. Keep the app’s confirmation and check that the merchant has received payment.
NPCI says a UPI payment cannot be stopped once initiated. If the app does not show success or the cashier cannot confirm receipt, check the transaction status and complaint route in your app or with your bank before trying again; paying a second time without checking could duplicate the payment. UPI limits, exchange rates and fees in Qatar
NPCI’s general UPI FAQ gives a limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction for ordinary UPI payments. It also lists higher ceilings for specified categories—up to ₹2 lakh for certain categories and up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct transactions. Those category limits do not describe ordinary Qatar retail QR purchases. The official sources reviewed do not state a Qatar-specific merchant-payment cap, and your bank or app may apply its own rules. Do not treat ₹1 lakh as a guaranteed limit for a Qatar payment. There is no single Qatar-wide conversion rate or fee established for every bank and app combination in the official pages reviewed. NPCI instructs users to check the final foreign- and Indian-currency amounts and any applicable rate or fee. Use the payment preview and your bank or app’s current terms to judge the cost of that transaction. Do not assume UPI means no foreign-exchange cost or no fee.

Qatar Mobile Payment (QMP) is Qatar’s domestic interoperable e-wallet system, which supports local QR merchant payments. Qatar Central Bank lists proof of identity (passport and entry visa), a smartphone with internet access and an active Qatar telecom mobile number among the requirements for visitor registration. This is separate from activating Indian UPI Global for an eligible Indian bank account; you do not need to register for QMP merely to use UPI at a participating Qatar merchant.
