Patch Exchange by identifying the exact edition and build, choosing the security update Microsoft lists for that installation, then verifying it with the release-specific guidance and Exchange Server Health Checker. Use Exchange Emergency Mitigation only as a temporary control while preparing the update. After patching, keep monitoring for suspicious files and behavior: an update fixes known vulnerabilities, but it does not establish that a server was never compromised or is now clean.
How do I choose the right Exchange Server update?
Exchange updates are version-specific. Before downloading or installing one, inventory each server’s Exchange edition, cumulative update (CU) and build, server role, and whether it is exposed to the internet. Use Microsoft’s current Exchange Server update-status information and Exchange Server update FAQ to check the applicable update and support path. Do not choose an update based only on its release date or assume that an update for one CU applies to another.

Use the Microsoft security-update article for the exact Exchange release and CU, and follow its installation instructions and prerequisites. Microsoft’s update-status and support guidance can change, so consult the live documentation when planning each update rather than relying on an older patch list.
How do I install and verify the security update?
- Confirm applicability. Match the server’s installed edition, CU, and build to the Microsoft update article. If you manage multiple servers, check each one rather than assuming they share the same update path.
- Follow the matching article. Obtain the update and use the installation procedure Microsoft documents for that release. Do not substitute instructions or a package intended for a different Exchange version or CU.
- Check the result. Follow the article’s verification guidance and run Exchange Server Health Checker as Microsoft recommends. Review its output for whether the update is installed and whether additional actions are indicated.
- Investigate errors by their exact symptoms. Do not apply a fix for one post-update failure to a different problem; use Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance that matches the observed error.
For example, Microsoft’s July 14, 2026 security-update article for Exchange Server 2019 CU14 covers KB5103214 and recommends Health Checker to confirm installation and identify additional actions. That example applies to the release named in that article; it is not a universal update recommendation or proof that it is the right update for another Exchange installation.

If OWA or ECP reports a specific assembly-loading error
Microsoft documents a case in which OWA or ECP fails after an update with the message “Could not load file or assembly Microsoft.Exchange.Common.” For that documented symptom, its troubleshooting guidance directs administrators to reinstall the security update from an elevated command prompt and restart the server. Treat this as a symptom-specific remedy, not a general procedure for every failed update or post-update error.
Can Exchange Emergency Mitigation replace a security update?
No. Exchange Emergency Mitigation (EM) can reduce exposure while an update is being prepared, but Microsoft describes its mitigations as temporary interim fixes, not a replacement for the security update that fixes the vulnerability. Where applicable, the service can apply mitigations for known threats, including URL Rewrite rules and service or app-pool mitigations.

How can I check for web shells?
Monitor Exchange client-access paths, including ClientAccess and FrontEnd locations, for unexpected file creation. Microsoft’s security guidance describes suspicious .aspx and .ashx files in these areas. An unfamiliar file is a lead to investigate, not proof of compromise: correlate its creation time and path with the process that created it and other endpoint or server activity.

- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
- Investigate unexpected files in Exchange client-access locations, including their timestamps and initiating process.
- Use behavior-based endpoint detection and response where available, and investigate related process activity rather than judging a file by its extension alone.
- Consider AMSI-supported inspection of Exchange requests as another detection layer. Microsoft’s Exchange guidance describes AMSI and Defender-based approaches for investigating web-shell activity.
- If activity suggests compromise, follow your incident-response procedures to scope and contain it. Applying an update alone does not determine whether an attacker left files, persistence, or other signs of access.
Web shells can be disguised, so monitoring should not rely only on a filename or a one-time scan. File and process behavior, request inspection, and endpoint investigation provide complementary signals; detection helps with investigation but cannot guarantee that every compromise will be found.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep patching and detection in separate parts of the workflow
Use Microsoft’s current update and support guidance to select and verify the fix for the installed build. Use EM, where applicable, to reduce exposure temporarily while arranging that fix. Continue monitoring and investigating suspicious activity before and after patching. These controls address different risks and are most useful when treated as complementary rather than interchangeable.
