How to Password-Protect phpMyAdmin Securely with htpasswd

A practical, layered method for protecting phpMyAdmin with Apache Basic Authentication and htpasswd, including exact directives, safe file handling, HTTPS requirements, PHP-FPM troubleshooting and hardening.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The secure pattern is to put Apache Basic Authentication in front of the phpMyAdmin URL, store that web password in an htpasswd file, and keep phpMyAdmin’s own MySQL authentication enabled. The two controls do different jobs: htpasswd stops an unauthorised web request before phpMyAdmin loads, while MySQL users and privileges decide which databases and operations are available after login.

Use this procedure for an Apache deployment. Serve the protected URL over HTTPS only, keep the password file outside the public document root where practical, and treat the web-server gate as an additional layer rather than a replacement for database permissions.

What htpasswd protection actually does

Apache Basic Authentication challenges a browser when it requests the phpMyAdmin location. The browser must supply a username and password that Apache can verify against the configured password file. Only then does the request continue to PHP and phpMyAdmin.

This gate is independent of phpMyAdmin’s login screen. A person can pass the Apache challenge and still be rejected by MySQL, or can authenticate to phpMyAdmin but have access limited by MySQL grants. The arrangement is therefore layered:

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
  • Apache and htpasswd: controls who may reach the phpMyAdmin application.
  • phpMyAdmin authentication: establishes a MySQL session using the selected authentication mode.
  • MySQL authorization: controls databases, tables and operations for the MySQL account.

Do not confuse a successful Basic Authentication prompt with database authorization. The web password is not a MySQL password unless you deliberately make them the same, which is unnecessary and weakens separation.

Before you change the configuration

Confirm the deployment and URL

Identify the Apache virtual host, directory or location block that serves phpMyAdmin. The correct place varies by installation: some packages expose a dedicated alias, while others place phpMyAdmin inside a site’s document tree. Put the authentication directives in the configuration that actually handles the public phpMyAdmin URL, not in an unrelated virtual host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm administrative access

You need permission to edit Apache configuration, create a file readable by the Apache account, reload Apache and inspect its error logs. If a hosting provider does not expose those controls, the provider must apply the change or provide an equivalent access-control feature.

Plan the password-file location

Keep the file outside the public document root whenever possible. A browser should never be able to request it as a static download. The example path used in phpMyAdmin’s setup documentation is /usr/share/phpmyadmin/passwd; use the path appropriate to your installation and ensure Apache can read it while ordinary web users cannot.

Use HTTPS first

Basic Authentication sends credentials in a form that must be protected by TLS. Do not expose the challenge or the protected phpMyAdmin URL over plain HTTP. Redirect HTTP to HTTPS at the server edge, and serve the application only through the HTTPS endpoint. The phpMyAdmin project’s security recommendations also advise HSTS for HTTPS deployments.

Step 1: enable Apache authentication support

Apache must have its authentication and authorisation support available before it can process the directives. On a managed system this may already be enabled; on a self-managed server, install or enable the distribution’s Apache authentication module according to that distribution’s procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After enabling it, determine whether your package uses a central virtual-host file, an included directory fragment or a per-directory configuration. Keep the change in version-controlled configuration when your operating practice supports it. Avoid placing credentials or password-file contents in a web-accessible PHP or HTML file.

Step 2: create the htpasswd file

Create a new password file with the -c option and choose a distinct web-gate username:

htpasswd -c /usr/share/phpmyadmin/passwd username

The command prompts for the password without displaying it. The -c option creates or replaces the file, so use it only when creating a new file. Running it again on an existing file can remove the users already stored there.

When adding another person later, omit -c:

htpasswd /usr/share/phpmyadmin/passwd another_username

Protect the file with filesystem permissions that allow the Apache account to read it but do not grant unnecessary access to other users. The exact owner and mode depend on the operating system and how Apache is launched; verify them against the account named by your service configuration rather than copying a permission value blindly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a password must be changed or a user removed

Use the normal htpasswd management operation for the existing file, always omitting -c. Make a backup before editing a production file, and verify that the resulting file remains readable by Apache. A change to this file affects the outer web gate; it does not change any MySQL password or grant.

Step 3: add Basic Authentication to the phpMyAdmin location

Add these directives to the Apache virtual host, directory or location configuration that serves phpMyAdmin:

AuthType Basic
AuthName "Restricted Access"
AuthUserFile /usr/share/phpmyadmin/passwd
Require valid-user

AuthType Basic selects HTTP Basic Authentication. AuthName is the realm label displayed by the browser. AuthUserFile points to the password file created in the previous step. Require valid-user allows any username present in that file.

If you need to limit access to a named set of web users, use an appropriate Apache authorisation rule instead of allowing every entry. Keep the password-file path exactly aligned with the real filesystem location and do not use a URL in AuthUserFile.

Scope matters

Applying the directives too broadly can lock an entire site or expose an unintended path. Applying them too narrowly can leave an alternate phpMyAdmin alias unprotected. Check every public URL and alias that reaches the application, including an administrative hostname if one exists. The protection should cover the complete phpMyAdmin entry point, not merely one static directory.

Step 4: reload Apache and verify the gate

Reload Apache using your operating system’s normal service-management procedure. A reload applies configuration without unnecessarily terminating existing connections; if the configuration parser reports an error, correct it before attempting another reload.

Test from a private browser window or a clean browser profile so previously cached credentials do not hide a problem. Check the sequence below:

  1. Request the HTTPS phpMyAdmin URL without credentials. The response should produce a Basic Authentication challenge.
  2. Cancel the prompt or submit an incorrect password. The request should not reach the phpMyAdmin login page.
  3. Enter a valid htpasswd username and password. The request should proceed to phpMyAdmin’s normal login page.
  4. Sign in with a permitted MySQL account and confirm that its expected databases and operations are available.
  5. Repeat the test with an account that should not be allowed through the web gate, and confirm that it is rejected before phpMyAdmin loads.

This test separates the two authentication layers. If the browser never receives a challenge, Apache is not applying the directives to the URL you tested. If the challenge works but phpMyAdmin cannot see the request’s credentials, inspect the PHP execution path described below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: preserve phpMyAdmin’s own authentication

The Apache gate is an outer control. Continue using phpMyAdmin’s cookie or HTTP authentication against MySQL unless you have a documented reason to choose another mode.

Cookie authentication

Cookie authentication generally suits shared hosting and multi-user deployments because each person enters a MySQL username and password through phpMyAdmin rather than placing a database password in config.inc.php. phpMyAdmin maintains the authenticated session in its normal way, while Apache still controls entry to the application.

HTTP authentication inside phpMyAdmin

phpMyAdmin’s HTTP mode allows login as any valid MySQL user. It can be useful where the application itself should use an HTTP challenge, but the browser’s handling of Basic Authentication has an important limitation: browsers may retain the credentials, so there is no normal phpMyAdmin-style logout that reliably forgets the web password.

Config authentication

Config authentication can expose the MySQL username and password to anyone who can read config.inc.php. Avoid it unless the file and the host are tightly controlled and you have accepted that exposure. It also changes the operational model: database credentials are kept in configuration rather than entered by the user.

Mode Where credentials are stored or entered Separate Apache gate? Logout behaviour Typical fit
Cookie Entered by the user in phpMyAdmin; session is maintained by phpMyAdmin Yes, when combined with htpasswd phpMyAdmin can end its session normally; the browser may still retain the Apache credentials Generally the safer default for shared hosting and multi-user deployments
HTTP Supplied through an HTTP challenge for a valid MySQL user Yes, when an outer htpasswd gate is also configured Browser credential retention limits normal logout Deployments that specifically need HTTP-mode MySQL login
Config Stored in config.inc.php Yes, when htpasswd is configured Depends on the application session, but the configured database secret remains on disk Only tightly controlled hosts where the file and permissions are rigorously protected

Whichever phpMyAdmin mode you select, MySQL privileges remain the final authority over database access. The htpasswd file does not grant, remove or alter a MySQL privilege.

PHP-FPM and mod_proxy_fcgi: forward the Authorization header when needed

When PHP runs behind Apache’s mod_proxy_fcgi and PHP-FPM, the web server may authenticate the request but fail to pass the Authorization header to the application. If phpMyAdmin’s HTTP authentication does not receive credentials in that arrangement, apply the documented header-forwarding adjustment where appropriate:

SetEnvIf Authorization "(.*)" HTTP_AUTHORIZATION=$1

Place the setting in the applicable Apache context for the PHP-FPM deployment, then reload Apache and repeat the private-window test. Do not add the rule indiscriminately: confirm that this is the execution path and that the setting is acceptable for the rest of the virtual host. The rule forwards the header; it does not replace the AuthType, AuthUserFile or Require directives.

Hardening beyond the password prompt

Keep the channel encrypted

  • Serve phpMyAdmin on HTTPS only.
  • Consider HSTS once HTTPS is correctly deployed across the relevant host and subdomains.
  • Do not treat an HTTP Basic challenge as safe on an unencrypted connection.

Reduce the exposed installation

  • Remove phpMyAdmin’s setup directory after configuration.
  • Remove the tests directory unless you are actively developing or testing the installation.
  • Deny direct access to auxiliary libraries/ and templates/ paths.
  • Protect temporary files and confirm that they cannot be downloaded through the web server.

Maintain the application

Keep phpMyAdmin updated in response to the project’s security announcements. Do not leave production error display enabled: verbose errors can disclose paths, configuration details or other information useful to an attacker.

Limit database identities

Use phpMyAdmin’s AllowDeny rules to restrict which MySQL users may enter where that policy fits your deployment. Consider a policy that denies root access through phpMyAdmin with AllowRoot. A web gate that admits only trusted operators is stronger when those operators also use least-privilege MySQL accounts.

Separate sessions on shared servers

If phpMyAdmin shares a server with other PHP applications, use separate session storage. Session boundaries should not depend on another application’s files, cookies or cleanup process.

Watch failed attempts

Where available, configure failed phpMyAdmin login attempts to be logged to syslog. A fail2ban policy can consume those logs and block repeated attacks. Logging and blocking complement the Apache gate; they do not make an unencrypted connection safe and do not replace timely updates.

Troubleshooting by symptom

No password prompt appears

  • Check that you requested the exact URL and hostname covered by the protected virtual host, directory or location.
  • Check for an alternate alias, reverse-proxy route or second entry point to phpMyAdmin.
  • Confirm that Apache reloaded the file you edited and that its configuration parser accepted it.
  • Check that the request is reaching Apache rather than another front-end web server whose configuration needs to enforce HTTPS or access control first.

The prompt appears, but valid credentials are rejected

  • Verify the AuthUserFile path character for character.
  • Confirm that the file was created with htpasswd and that you did not accidentally recreate it with -c while adding a user.
  • Check that the Apache account can read the file and that directory permissions allow traversal.
  • Inspect Apache’s error log for a permission, syntax or authentication-provider error.

The gate succeeds, but phpMyAdmin shows a login or header error

  • Determine whether PHP is running through mod_proxy_fcgi and PHP-FPM.
  • If it is, apply the documented SetEnvIf Authorization forwarding rule where appropriate and reload Apache.
  • Check that phpMyAdmin’s selected authentication mode matches your intended flow; an outer htpasswd account is not automatically a MySQL account.

Users can enter phpMyAdmin but see too much or too little

Review MySQL grants and phpMyAdmin’s AllowDeny policy. The htpasswd file answers “who may reach the application?”; MySQL privileges answer “what may this database user do?” Correcting one layer cannot compensate for an error in the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A user cannot log out completely

This is expected for browser-managed Basic Authentication. Closing the phpMyAdmin session does not necessarily clear the browser’s cached HTTP credentials. Use a private browser window for temporary access, close that window when finished, and understand that changing or removing the htpasswd entry is the administrative way to invalidate the web gate for that account.

Operational checklist

  • Apache authentication support is enabled.
  • The protected directives are attached to every public phpMyAdmin entry point.
  • The password file is outside the public document root where practical.
  • The file was created with htpasswd -c only once, and later users were added without -c.
  • Apache can read the file, while unnecessary local users cannot.
  • HTTP is redirected or rejected so credentials travel only over HTTPS.
  • An unauthenticated private-window request receives a Basic challenge.
  • A valid web-gate account reaches phpMyAdmin; an invalid one does not.
  • phpMyAdmin’s cookie or HTTP authentication still reaches MySQL as intended.
  • MySQL grants, AllowDeny and any root policy match the operator roles.
  • The setup and unnecessary tests directories are removed.
  • Auxiliary directories and temporary files are not directly downloadable.
  • Production error display is disabled, updates are monitored and failed logins are logged where possible.
  • PHP-FPM header forwarding is configured only when that deployment requires it.

What to remember

Use Apache Basic Authentication and an htpasswd file to protect access before phpMyAdmin loads. Use HTTPS so the web password is not exposed in transit. Keep phpMyAdmin’s own authentication and MySQL privilege model in place, because the web gate does not authorise database actions. On PHP-FPM deployments, verify that the Authorization header reaches the application. Finally, remove setup and test exposure, restrict auxiliary paths, monitor failures and keep phpMyAdmin current. The phpMyAdmin project’s setup and security documentation, checked on 2026-10-14, supports this layered approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does htpasswd replace the phpMyAdmin or MySQL password?

No. It authenticates the request at Apache. phpMyAdmin still authenticates a MySQL user, and that user’s MySQL grants still control database access.

Why should I never use -c when adding a second user?

-c creates a new password file and can replace the existing entries. Create the file with -c once, then add users to the existing file without that option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the same username in htpasswd and MySQL?

You can, but the names belong to separate authentication systems and do not need to match. Keeping the web-gate credentials separate from database credentials makes the security boundary clearer.

What if I cannot edit Apache configuration?

Ask the hosting or server administrator to apply the directives, create and protect the password file, enforce HTTPS and verify the URL scope. Without control of the web server, you cannot independently guarantee an Apache-level gate.
