How to Pass JavaScript Rendering Options to a Screenshot API with Make

Send a screenshot API a JSON request from Make’s HTTP module, using the provider’s exact JavaScript field and response format. Includes a RenderScreenshot example and troubleshooting.

Use Make’s HTTP app to send a screenshot API a JSON request containing the target URL and the JavaScript option documented by that provider. In the RenderScreenshot example below, injected scripts go in page.scripts; another provider may use a different field, authentication method, or response format.

Choose a Make route: native app or HTTP

If your screenshot provider has a Make app that exposes the JavaScript option and any interactions your workflow needs, its ready-made capture action may be the simplest route. Make lists GetScreenshot actions for webpage and element captures, as well as workflows that pass captures to cloud storage or email: Make integrations.

Use Make’s HTTP app when you need to call an API endpoint directly or pass a documented option that the native module does not expose. Make describes its HTTP app as a way to connect workflows to APIs and configure requests, including JSON bodies: HTTP app documentation.

Check the screenshot API’s schema first

Make transports the request; the screenshot API defines its endpoint, authentication, accepted JavaScript field, and response contract. Before building the scenario, check those details in the selected provider’s current API reference. The example here uses RenderScreenshot’s POST endpoint, https://api.renderscreenshot.com/v1/screenshot, with Bearer authentication and a JSON request body. Its documented injection field is page.scripts: RenderScreenshot API documentation.

Do not assume that another API accepts this endpoint or body shape. Confirm whether scripts must be strings, URLs, or another structure, and whether the response is an image/PDF binary, a URL, or JSON.

Configure the Make HTTP request

  1. Add Make’s HTTP > Make a request module to your scenario.
  2. Set the method to POST and the URL to https://api.renderscreenshot.com/v1/screenshot.
  3. Set the request body type to JSON, using Make’s structured data fields or a raw JSON body.
  4. Add an Authorization header with the value Bearer YOUR_API_KEY. Use Make’s secure credential handling where available; do not put a live key in a shared scenario body. Make has described secure keychain handling for API keys in its HTTP app: Make HTTP app announcement.
  5. Map the page URL into the required url field, then add the JavaScript under the provider’s exact documented field name.
  6. Run the module once and inspect the output bundle before mapping it to a storage, email, or other downstream module.

Example JSON body for RenderScreenshot

{
  "url": "https://example.com",
  "page": {
    "scripts": [
      "window.exampleFlag = true;"
    ]
  }
}

RenderScreenshot also documents an object form for an externally hosted script, such as { "url": "https://example.com/script.js" }, inside the page.scripts array. Use only scripts you control or trust, and verify the provider’s current accepted syntax before relying on it.

Map the screenshot response into the rest of the scenario

RenderScreenshot documents successful responses as screenshot binary with an image or PDF content type, plus an X-Cache-URL response header. If Make exposes the image as binary data, map the output’s file name and data fields to the destination module. If your chosen provider instead returns a downloadable URL, Make documents using HTTP > Download a file before passing the file to another module: Download a file.

Inspect the actual successful run rather than assuming the result format from the request configuration. Header availability and bundle field names can differ between APIs and Make modules.

Choose only the rendering options your workflow needs

The RenderScreenshot reference lists optional settings beyond scripts, including viewport dimensions, output format and quality, page styles, clicking a selector, hiding or removing elements, blocking ads and trackers, cookie banners and chat widgets, PDF page setup, and caching. Check the API reference for exact field names, defaults, and limits before adding them. A provider’s available controls are not necessarily available in Make’s native app.

  • Need injected behavior? Add the provider’s script field and confirm whether it accepts inline strings, external script URLs, or both.
  • Need a particular page state? Check for documented waits or interactions rather than assuming script injection alone waits for the page to update.
  • Need a file in a downstream module? Establish whether the response is binary or a URL and map or download it accordingly.
  • Need a native Make module? Verify that its exposed options cover the same behavior; otherwise use HTTP.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Authentication error The key is missing, invalid, or sent using the wrong authentication scheme. For the RenderScreenshot example, check the Authorization: Bearer header and confirm the credential is valid in the provider account.
Request rejected or validation error The endpoint, method, JSON structure, or option names do not match the provider’s schema. Confirm the POST endpoint, required url, JSON content type, and page.scripts structure against the provider’s current API reference.
Screenshot arrives without the expected JavaScript effect The script field is unsupported, malformed, or not appropriate for the intended page state. Check the provider’s accepted script format and whether its API offers a documented wait or interaction option for the page.
Downstream file module receives no usable file The API returned a URL or structured response, but the scenario treated it as binary, or the binary fields were not mapped. Inspect the run output. Map file name and data for binary responses; use HTTP > Download a file for a returned URL.
Scenario works for one provider but not another Request fields, authentication, and response format are provider-specific. Rebuild the request from the second provider’s documentation instead of copying RenderScreenshot’s schema.
