There is no single re-pairing sequence for every smart TV remote. Whether you need to pair it again—and how—depends on the TV or streaming device, the remote type, and the model’s software. Identify those first, then use the matching manufacturer instructions rather than trying button combinations from another brand.
Before you start, identify the remote and device
“Smart TV remote” can mean an infrared remote, a Bluetooth remote, or a platform-specific voice or touchpad remote. Their pairing steps are not interchangeable. Find the TV or streaming-device model and check whether the remote is the original one; consult that model’s support page if the buttons or menus do not match the instructions below.

A factory reset may restore the device to initial setup. Roku says its reset returns the device to factory-default configuration, so setup must be completed again. Sony specifically notes that Touchpad remote pairing must be activated again after a factory reset. A reset does not guarantee that every remote needs re-pairing.
Pairing instructions for common platforms
Roku voice remotes
If you can navigate the Roku device with another working remote or the Roku mobile app, open Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote > Continue and follow the prompts. Roku’s voice-remote pairing instructions also describe pairing after restarting the device:

- Unplug the Roku device, wait at least five seconds, plug it back in, and wait for the Home screen.
- On a remote with a pairing button, hold that button for five seconds, until the status light flashes. If there is no pairing button, hold Back + Home for five seconds, until the light flashes.
- Make sure the device and remote are both in pairing mode, then follow any on-screen prompts.
If pairing does not start, Roku recommends restarting the device and checking for obstacles, distance, or interference. Its mobile app can provide temporary control when no physical remote is available. Before resetting a Roku device, Roku advises having your account credentials, Wi-Fi details, app sign-ins, and any parental-control PIN available; the reset erases preferences and unlinks the device from the account. Samsung Smart Remote
For the Samsung Smart Remote covered by Samsung’s troubleshooting instructions, stand within one foot of the TV and hold Return + Play/Pause together for at least five seconds, or until the TV displays a message that the remote is connected. This guidance follows the remote reset described on Samsung’s support page. If your remote or TV has different buttons or menus, check the exact model’s instructions.

Sony Google TV and Android TV
For supported Sony Google TV and Android TV models, the pairing menu route in Sony’s Bluetooth pairing instructions is Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Remote control > Connect via Bluetooth > Connect a new remote. Follow the on-screen prompts. Sony notes that a low remote battery can prevent pairing. The path and procedure vary by model year and software version.
Sony says Touchpad remote pairing must be activated again after a factory reset. Its reset guidance also cautions that on-screen steps can differ by model and operating-system version; see Sony’s factory-reset guidance.

For the BRAVIA 6 specifically, Sony’s help guide says initial setup prompts pairing with HOME + BACK. To pair again, hold those buttons for approximately three seconds, or use Dashboard > All settings > Remotes & Accessories. Keep the remote within one meter and wait for the TV to finish starting and launching background processes before entering pairing mode. These directions are for that model, not a universal Sony sequence.
Amazon Fire TV
Amazon’s Fire TV remote reset help page indicates that the device should be plugged in and that an on-screen remote-detection error message is part of the process. Because the available instructions do not establish the full procedure here, use Amazon’s current directions for your specific Fire TV device and remote rather than guessing a button combination.

If the remote still will not connect
- Wait for startup to finish. Confirm the TV or streaming device has reached its setup or home screen before pairing.
- Check power. Replace depleted batteries or charge a rechargeable remote. Sony identifies low battery as a possible pairing problem.
- Move closer. Follow the distance in the matching model instructions: Samsung’s cited procedure says within one foot; Sony’s BRAVIA 6 guide says within one meter.
- Use only the matching sequence. Do not combine button steps from different brands or remote generations.
- Try temporary control if available. Roku explicitly recommends its mobile app as an alternative when the remote is unavailable.
- Check the exact model’s support page. If pairing still fails, contact the manufacturer. A replacement remote needs to be compatible with the device and may need to support functions such as Bluetooth, voice, TV power, or volume.
