To pair AirPods with an iPhone, open the case with the earbuds inside, hold it near the iPhone, then tap Connect when the setup animation appears. For a Mac, Android phone, or other Bluetooth device, put the AirPods into pairing mode and select them from that device’s Bluetooth list. The pairing control depends on your AirPods model.
Pair AirPods with an iPhone
- Go to the iPhone Home Screen.
- Place the AirPods in their case, open the lid, and hold the case near the iPhone.
- When the setup animation appears, tap Connect and follow any on-screen prompts. Tap Done when setup finishes.
- If the animation does not appear, put the AirPods into pairing mode, then open Settings > Bluetooth and tap the AirPods when they appear.
For the model-specific pairing control, follow Apple’s iPhone setup instructions. If the AirPods were previously owned by someone else, that person must remove them from their Apple Account before you can pair and use them.

Pair AirPods with a Mac
If they are already set up with your iPhone
If your Mac uses the same Apple Account, put the AirPods in your ears and check Control Centre > Sound. Select them if they are available.

Pair them from Mac Bluetooth settings
- On the Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Place the AirPods in their case and open the lid.
- Put the AirPods into pairing mode using the control for your model.
- When they appear under nearby devices, click Connect.
If the Mac remains the audio output after pairing, select the AirPods as the sound output. Apple’s Mac and Bluetooth-device setup instructions show the setup route.
Pair AirPods with Android or another Bluetooth device
- Open the other device’s Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
- With the AirPods in their case, open the lid and put them into pairing mode using the control for their model.
- Choose the AirPods when they appear in the device’s Bluetooth list.
Apple describes this as using AirPods “as a Bluetooth headset with a non-Apple device.” Listening and talking are supported; Siri is not available. The steps and labels for opening Bluetooth settings vary by device.

Find the pairing control for your AirPods model
Do not assume every AirPods case pairs the same way. Apple’s current setup pages specify the control by model:

- Models with a case setup button: Press and hold the button until the status light flashes white.
- Specified newer models: Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
- AirPods Max: Use the listening-mode button to enter pairing mode.
Check Apple’s iPhone instructions or Mac and Bluetooth-device instructions for the exact steps for your model.

Switch AirPods between devices after pairing
Pairing connects AirPods with a device; switching determines which already-paired device plays audio. Supported AirPods can switch automatically among supported Apple devices when those devices use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication. You can also select the AirPods manually from the audio-output or Bluetooth controls on the device you want to use. Model and operating-system requirements apply, so check Apple’s current device-switching instructions for compatibility.

If AirPods do not appear in the Bluetooth list
- Confirm Bluetooth is turned on for the device you are pairing with.
- Check that you used the pairing control specified for your AirPods model and that the status light indicates pairing mode where applicable.
- Make sure both earbuds are charging, then try pairing again, as Apple advises in its setup guidance.
- If the AirPods belonged to another person, have them remove the AirPods from their Apple Account before trying again.
