How to Pair a Plantronics Headset and Set Up Mac Audio

Pair your headset in macOS Bluetooth settings, then select it separately for sound output and microphone input. Adapter compatibility depends on the exact model.

Put your Plantronics or Poly headset into its model-specific pairing mode, connect it in Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth, then select it separately for sound output and microphone input in System Settings > Sound. A USB adapter may be needed for some models or setups, but BT600 and BT700 adapters are not universal requirements.

Connect the headset over Bluetooth

  1. Turn on the headset and use the pairing or discoverable-mode procedure for that exact model. The control differs across headset styles, so consult its instructions rather than assuming one button sequence works for all Plantronics devices.
  2. On your MacBook Pro, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth.
  3. When the headset appears in the device list, select it to connect. Apple’s Mac Bluetooth guide explains that the accessory must be turned on and discoverable.

Choose the headset for listening and speaking

Bluetooth pairing does not necessarily make the headset the Mac’s active device for both audio roles. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound, then select the headset under Output for playback and under Input to use its microphone. Apple’s Sound settings guide covers choosing Mac sound devices.

If you use a calling app, also check its audio settings and choose the headset or its adapter as the microphone input if needed.

Decide whether to use a USB Bluetooth adapter

Some Plantronics or Poly headsets are supplied with a USB Bluetooth adapter. Poly’s BT700 quick-start guide instructs Mac users to select the Poly BT700 for sound input and output; its 2021 instructions use the older “System Preferences” wording. On current macOS, these choices are in System Settings > Sound.

Whether an adapter is appropriate depends on the headset model and the adapter’s compatibility. Confirm the exact model and whether the adapter uses USB-A or USB-C before connecting or purchasing one. The headset title alone is not enough to establish that a BT600 or BT700 will work. If the headset supports wired USB or audio, that may be another option, but the model documentation must specify the cable and Mac port requirements.

Connection option When it may fit Check first
Direct Bluetooth The headset supports Bluetooth and you want a wireless connection without a separate adapter. Use that model’s pairing procedure, then choose it for both input and output.
Compatible USB Bluetooth adapter The headset was supplied with an adapter, its instructions specify one, or an adapter needs to be re-paired. Verify headset compatibility, adapter model, and USB-A or USB-C connector.
Wired USB or audio The particular headset supports a wired connection. Check the headset documentation for cable and Mac port requirements.

Fix common connection and audio problems

The headset does not appear in Bluetooth

  • Check that it is powered on and in pairing or discoverable mode, not merely switched on.
  • Follow the pairing instructions for the exact model; controls vary between headset designs.

The Mac says it is connected, but sound comes from the Mac

Open System Settings > Sound > Output and select the headset or its USB adapter. Pairing alone does not guarantee that macOS has selected it for playback.

Music sounds worse when a call starts

macOS Bluetooth audio can change when an app uses the headset microphone. Apple explains in its April 23, 2025 support article that audio quality and volume are reduced when Bluetooth headphones are used for both listening and microphone input. Quit apps using the headset microphone when you do not need it, or reselect the headphones in Control Center > Sound for listening. Apple also recommends checking that System Settings is not left open displaying Sound settings.

A USB adapter no longer connects to the headset

Adapter re-pairing depends on its model. HP/Poly provides separate instructions: BT700 re-pairing uses Poly Lens Desktop App, while the BT600 procedure uses its own pairing controls. Follow the guide for your adapter and headset rather than applying one model’s procedure to another.
