To pair Joy-Con 2, attach them to the powered-on Switch 2, or open HOME Menu > Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold a controller’s SYNC button for at least one second. Pair a Switch 2 Pro Controller from the same screen, or connect it by USB. To check charge, open HOME Menu > Controllers; the screen shows approximate battery life for each actively paired controller.
Pair Joy-Con 2
Attaching Joy-Con 2 to the console is the quickest option. Turn on the Switch 2 and slide the controllers onto the console until they are securely attached. They are ready to use and pair wirelessly as well, so you can detach them afterward. Nintendo documents this and the wireless procedure in its Joy-Con 2 pairing instructions.

Pair wirelessly
- On the HOME Menu, select Controllers, then Change Grip/Order.
- On the Joy-Con 2 you want to pair, press and hold the SYNC button for at least one second. Its player LED indicators remain lit after pairing.
- Choose the grip you will use. For two-controller play, press L on the left controller and R on the right, or press ZL and ZR. For individual horizontal play, press SL and SR on each controller.
Pairing connects the controllers; selecting the buttons for your grip tells the console how you intend to hold them.
Pair through the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip
You can also attach Joy-Con 2 to the separately sold Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip and connect the grip to the Switch 2 dock with its included USB-C cable. This is distinct from attaching the controllers directly to the console.

Pair a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
The Switch 2 Pro Controller can pair wirelessly or through USB. Nintendo’s Pro Controller pairing instructions describe both routes.
Pair wirelessly
- On the HOME Menu, select Controllers, then Change Grip/Order.
- Press and hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second. The player LED indicators remain lit when it is paired.
Pair through USB
Turn on the console and connect the Pro Controller to it with the included USB-C cable. Alternatively, place the console in the dock and connect the controller to the dock by USB.

From the HOME Menu, open Controllers. Nintendo says this screen displays approximate battery life for each controller actively paired to that Switch 2. It does not promise a numeric percentage for each controller.

The console battery display is separate. Press ZL and ZR together to show the console’s percentage temporarily. In handheld or tabletop mode, you can also tap the battery icon at the top right. To keep the console percentage on the HOME Menu, go to System Settings > System > System Battery (%) and turn it on. These options show the console’s charge, not a controller’s.

Charge Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller
Charge Joy-Con 2
Joy-Con 2 charge while attached to the Switch 2 if the console is connected to its AC adapter and is powered on or in Sleep Mode. For detached controllers, use the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip (model BEE-010, sold separately): connect the grip to the dock with its included USB cable, or connect it directly to the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter (NGN-01). Nintendo estimates about 3½ hours for a full Joy-Con 2 charge.
Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 charging instructions cover these methods. The older Joy-Con Charging Grip and Joy-Con Charging Stand (Two-Way) cannot be used with Joy-Con 2.

Charge the Switch 2 Pro Controller
Connect the controller’s included USB charging cable to a USB port on the Switch 2 dock, or connect the controller directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter with that cable. The console does not need to be docked when the controller is connected to the dock for charging. See Nintendo’s Pro Controller charging instructions.

Older Switch controllers
The original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con and original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but original Joy-Con cannot attach to the Switch 2 console. The older Joy-Con charging accessories are not compatible with Joy-Con 2. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance distinguishes the generations.
Joy-Con 2 power or charging problems
If a Joy-Con 2 will not turn on, its battery indication seems inaccurate, or it loses charge unusually quickly, follow Nintendo’s troubleshooting sequence:
- Confirm you are using the Switch 2 AC adapter marked NGN-01 and check the adapter for damage.
- Press the controller’s SYNC button once to reset it.
- Attach the controller to the console again, charge it, and check the battery indication on the Controllers screen.
Nintendo estimates a full Joy-Con 2 charge at about 3½ hours. If a controller charges but will not fully charge or does not hold charge, Nintendo directs users to service. See Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 power troubleshooting.
Do not apply battery figures for the original Switch Pro Controller to the Switch 2 Pro Controller: Nintendo’s cited figures of approximately six hours to charge and up to 40 hours of runtime concern the original model, and Nintendo says runtime varies with software and functions. The cited Switch 2 Pro Controller charging instructions do not state an equivalent charge-time or runtime figure. See the original Pro Controller FAQ.
