You can turn an old NES cartridge shell into a compact RetroPie system, but it is a Raspberry Pi computer in a cartridge-shaped case—not a modified game cartridge that runs on an original NES. The cited project uses a Raspberry Pi Zero, USB hub and gamepad, plus display and power cabling. The “2,400 games” figure is unverified: the project sources do not establish that count or describe a legal preloaded library.
What the NES cartridge project actually is
Raspberry Pi’s Pi Cart project feature describes a RetroPie-enabled Raspberry Pi Zero fitted inside an old NES cartridge shell. The Raspberry Pi connects to a display and USB controller; the shell is just the enclosure. It does not plug into an original NES or make that console run new software.

The project feature describes a four-port USB mini hub to support more than one USB controller. Raspberry Pi estimates assembly at about an hour, but that is the publisher’s estimate, not a guaranteed build time. The finished system’s capabilities depend on the board, software, controller, display connection and games you set up.
What parts do you need?
The older companion Raspberry Pi Official Magazine parts list is a useful reference, not a current compatibility guarantee. Check the board’s connectors and dimensions against the shell, and verify the cabling for the exact board revision you choose.

| Part | Purpose or compatibility note |
|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi Zero | The compact computer used in the referenced project. |
| Old NES cartridge shell | Enclosure only; confirm the board and cables physically fit before assembly. |
| Four-port USB mini hub | Adds USB connections; the project uses it to allow multiple controllers. |
| USB gamepad | The reference parts list names an iBuffalo USB Gamepad. An NES-style USB controller is another option; neither is an original NES controller plugged into the console. |
| Mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable | Display connection listed in the older parts list; check the selected board’s video connector. |
| USB OTG cable | USB connection listed for the reference design; check the selected board’s ports and hub arrangement. |
| Micro-USB extension | Power or access cabling listed in the reference build; confirm the selected board’s power connector. |
| NES security screwdriver | For opening the cartridge shell. |
| microSD card | Holds the operating system and files. Raspberry Pi’s RetroPie guide recommends 8GB for a setup limited to 8- and 16-bit systems and says 32GB is a reasonable choice if planning for more powerful systems later. These are recommendations in that guide, not universal current requirements. |
How to put a Raspberry Pi in an NES cartridge
- Check fit and connectors first. Compare the selected Pi’s dimensions and ports with the cartridge interior. Plan where the display, power, USB hub and controller cables will exit; the cited sources do not provide exact shell measurements or a guaranteed fit for every board revision.
- Open the cartridge. Use an NES security screwdriver to remove the shell screws. Keep the original game board separate; the Pi project replaces the cartridge’s electronics as a computing setup rather than modifying it to run on an NES.
- Prepare the RetroPie storage. Use a microSD card and install/configure RetroPie following the current instructions for your selected board. The Raspberry Pi guide’s card-size suggestions depend on the systems you plan to emulate.
- Arrange the hub and cables. Connect the USB hub, gamepad, display cable and power cabling in a layout that fits without crushing or sharply bending wires. Test access to the ports before closing the shell.
- Test before closing the case. Power the system, confirm that RetroPie starts, check the display and controller, and verify that the required files appear in the appropriate RetroPie console folders. Resolve connection or configuration problems while the shell is still open.
- Close the shell only after a successful test. Ensure the board and wiring are secured and do not interfere with the shell. The cited project does not provide a universal mounting method, so avoid assuming a particular adhesive or bracket will fit every cartridge.
How do you add games to RetroPie legally?
RetroPie software and game files are separate. Raspberry Pi’s setup tutorial describes transferring ROM files into RetroPie’s console folders, but it cautions readers to check that a download site does not supply pirated material. The tutorial points to itch.io homebrew ROMs and officially released Sega ROMs on Steam as examples of sources; check the individual release’s terms and the laws that apply where you live.
Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s guide to playing classic games legally discusses freeware and homebrew, including NES homebrew and a lost NES game released as freeware by its creators. It also warns that unauthorized ports can appear in homebrew catalogues, so a catalogue’s presence alone does not establish that a game is authorized.

Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ says its copyrights cover game code, audiovisual material, music, characters, packaging, manuals, labels and artwork. Nintendo Support states, “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” That is Nintendo’s stated position; it should not be read as a universal ruling on every jurisdiction or every personal-backup scenario.
Does it really hold 2,400 classic games?
The sources describing this build do not verify 2,400 games, explain what platforms or releases would count toward that number, or establish that any preloaded library is legal. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine repeats a broad description of a system that “can hold thousands of games from over three decades of consoles,” attributed to the project creator, but provides no precise count or capacity test. Treat “2,400” as an unsubstantiated title claim, not a measured specification or included bundle.

Actual storage needs depend on the files you lawfully obtain and the systems you intend to use. The Raspberry Pi guide’s 8GB and 32GB card suggestions are tied to its stated use cases; they do not substantiate a 2,400-game capacity. A game count alone also says nothing about whether every title is compatible, authorized or included.

What to check before choosing parts
- Board and shell fit: verify dimensions, ports and cable clearance; the cited sources do not publish exact internal measurements.
- Emulation expectations: Raspberry Pi’s guide presents the Pi Zero as suitable for embedded projects and relatively early systems, not as a blanket recommendation for every console.
- Controller connections: decide whether one USB gamepad is enough or whether you need the hub for multiple USB devices or players.
- Display and power cabling: match cables to the selected board’s actual connectors rather than copying an older list blindly.
- Storage: choose a microSD card for your intended software and legally obtained files, not an unverified game-count headline.
