Use Collections to group books, library views and filters to find them, and Remove Download to clear device storage without deleting a cloud-backed purchase. Kindle menus vary by device and app; the detailed view instructions below are for Kindle Scribe.
1. Create a small set of Collections around how you read
Collections are Kindle’s built-in way to group books and documents. Amazon describes them as folders, and a title can belong to more than one Collection. Start with a few useful groups—such as “Next reads,” “Read,” “Reference,” or a genre you browse often—instead of creating a separate category for every subject.

Collections organize your library; they do not contain or replace the book files. Amazon says deleting a Cloud Collection removes the collection, not the books or documents in it. Amazon’s Collections help also notes that older collections marked “Local Collection” are available only on the device where they were created.
2. Add a title to more than one Collection
Use overlapping categories when they make a book easier to find. For example, the same novel could appear in both “Mystery” and “Next reads.” Amazon’s Kindle Scribe guide confirms that an item can be added to more than one collection.

3. Switch to Collections view for category browsing
On Kindle Scribe, the library guide documents Grid, List, and Collections views. Collections view is useful when you want to browse your groups rather than scan every title. Scribe’s settings also let you choose whether collections appear only in Collections view, whether favorites appear in the library, or whether all collections appear. Those labels and options are device-specific; check your own Kindle’s menus rather than assuming the same controls exist in every app or model. See the Kindle Scribe User’s Guide.
4. Use filters to narrow what appears
Collections are durable categories; filters temporarily narrow the library view. On Kindle Scribe, selecting Downloaded shows content stored on the device. Clearing that filter reveals cloud content as well.

If a book seems to have vanished, first set the library to All and clear active filters. Amazon’s troubleshooting help also recommends syncing and checking the sort order, including Recent, when content does not appear where expected: Troubleshoot Kindle Content Not Appearing in Your Library.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →5. Download only the books you expect to read soon
For cloud-backed purchases, keeping only near-term reads downloaded can make the on-device library less crowded and free device storage. The books remain available in your Amazon library for later download. This is separate from organizing them into Collections: a collection’s visibility and whether its books are downloaded are different things.

Be cautious with files transferred by USB. They may not be archived in Amazon’s cloud, so removing their device copies can mean losing access to those files.
6. Choose Remove Download—not permanent deletion—for device cleanup
Use Remove Download when you want to clear a cloud-backed book from one device while keeping it in your account. You can download it again later. Permanently delete is different: Amazon says it removes the content from the cloud account and devices. Check the action label before confirming any deletion. Amazon’s Kindle Scribe guide explains both options.

Loans have a separate rule: returning a Kindle Unlimited or Prime Reading title removes it from your library; that is not the same as removing a personal purchase’s download. Amazon describes the mobile-app steps in Remove Books from Your Mobile Kindle App.
7. If a Collection is missing on another device, check sync and downloads
Collections created on a registered device or on Amazon’s website do not automatically download to other devices, according to Amazon’s e-reader help. On supported e-readers, open Library, choose Collections, open the collection menu, and select Download all items to download its contents. Sync may also be needed for library changes to appear.

Cloud Collections can sync across supported devices and apps using the same Amazon account. Older “Local Collection” groups are limited to the device where they were created, so their absence elsewhere does not necessarily mean the books are missing. Follow Amazon’s Download Collections to Your Kindle E-Reader steps for supported readers.
Windows app version note
Amazon’s Windows help states that the Legacy Kindle app, previously called Kindle for PC, is unsupported as of June 30, 2026. Because that date has passed, check Amazon’s current Windows guidance before following older instructions for creating Collections in that app. The support notice appears in Create Collections in Kindle for Windows.
