Keep original videos separate from playback-ready copies, generate an explicit playlist manifest from approved files, and store the encoder configuration, logs, and local recordings in their own locations. This makes the rotation easier to review and update, while reducing the chance that temporary, duplicate, or excluded files slip into a 24/7 stream. The layout below is a practical convention, not a directory standard required by YouTube.
Use separate folders for different jobs
A growing library is easier to manage when each folder has one purpose. This suggested layout adapts a community VPS example; its paths are not mandatory for YouTube or every server.
/srv/youtube-stream/
media/
source-video/ # original files; keep as received
stream-ready/ # playback copies used by the encoder
audio/ # optional separate audio assets
excluded/ # items deliberately kept out of rotation
playlists/
video.txt # generated, ordered list of stream-ready files
config/ # encoder settings; protect credentials
logs/ # service and encoder logs
recordings/ # local recording or archive copies
The example layout is shown in the public 24/7 YouTube Stream setup and operations notes. Treat it as an example rather than a tested guarantee of availability or performance.
What belongs where
- source-video/: untouched originals. Retaining them means you can make a new playback copy later without having to retrieve the source again.
- stream-ready/: copies selected for playback. Normalize a copy only when consistency or compatibility calls for it; do not replace the source just to change an encoder format or resolution.
- audio/: optional separate audio assets, if your workflow uses them.
- excluded/: retired, rejected, or otherwise deliberately omitted items. Keeping them outside the active selection helps prevent accidental playback.
- playlists/: the ordered manifest that defines what the encoder should play. Generate it from an explicit selection, not a broad wildcard that could scoop up temporary or duplicate files.
- config/: encoder settings and service configuration. Protect this location, especially if it contains a stream key.
- logs/: encoder and service output to consult when playback or reconnects fail.
- recordings/: local archive files, if you record the outgoing stream. Monitor their growth and disk consumption.
Use stable filenames and back up the playlist manifest with your configuration if preserving the rotation order matters. These are operational practices, not official YouTube file-management rules.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Build a playlist that reflects the intended rotation
Think of the manifest as the reviewed boundary between your library and the live encoder: it should contain only approved, stream-ready files, in the order you intend to play them. A folder full of media is not itself a reliable playlist policy.
- Receive and inspect: put incoming files in
source-video/and keep the originals unchanged. - Select: decide which files are approved for this channel and rotation. Keep excluded or retired material out of the active selection.
- Prepare only when needed: create playback copies in
stream-ready/when you need consistent playback or compatible media. Test representative audio and motion at the intended output settings; YouTube recommends testing with content similar to the real stream. - Generate and review: rebuild the ordered manifest when files or ordering change. Review it before restarting the encoder, and back it up if the sequence matters.
- Keep the selection maintainable: use stable names and an explicit list so additions, removals, or rejected items do not silently alter the rotation.
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance concerns the stream output; it does not mean every stored source file must use the recommended streaming bitrate or codec.

Set the VPS encoder output for YouTube
Choose output settings for the stream you plan to send, rather than treating source-file properties as a platform requirement. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. For H.264, it specifies constant bitrate encoding, recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its current H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 720p60. These are YouTube’s output recommendations, not a promise that a particular source file will look good at those settings or that every VPS can sustain them. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current guidance.
For an ordinary encoder workflow, prefer RTMPS. It is RTMP over SSL; Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance specifies a valid RTMPS endpoint and port 443. Keep the stream key private: treat it like a credential, do not commit it to a public repository, and do not place it in publicly readable scripts.

Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps to configure the server URL and stream key in your chosen encoder. The exact controls depend on the encoder; the available guidance does not establish one universal VPS command or GUI path.
Size and operate the VPS from the actual workload
There is no responsible one-size-fits-all CPU or RAM specification here. The important distinction is whether the encoder re-encodes media or stream-copies files that are already compatible: transcoding adds compute demand. Either approach still depends on stable outbound connectivity. Pick a target resolution and bitrate, verify that the VPS can sustain the work, leave network headroom, and monitor the live output rather than assuming the configuration is healthy because the process is running.

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% bandwidth headroom and advise checking outbound capacity, accessibility, local archive growth, and continuing audio/video quality. The VPS example demonstrates looping local files with FFmpeg under systemd with automatic restart; it is one possible design, not a guarantee of uninterrupted availability or a YouTube requirement.
Continuous viewing and replay archives are different goals
A single uninterrupted broadcast is not a dependable way to obtain a complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving a replay matters, keep a local recording backup and decide whether to end and restart broadcasts on a schedule. There is no universal schedule: the choice depends on whether uninterrupted viewing, manageable archive segments, or both matter more. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Monitor local recording growth and disk use, and set a retention or rotation policy before recordings fill the VPS. YouTube also recommends checking that local archive files exist and that their size is growing.

- Place incoming media in
source-video/, inspect it, and preserve the original. - Approve the files intended for rotation; keep excluded or retired content out of the active playlist selection.
- Prepare playback copies only when needed, then test representative audio and motion at the actual output settings.
- Regenerate and review the ordered playlist manifest after any library or ordering change.
- Protect configuration and credentials, then start the encoder with the YouTube server URL and private stream key.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, confirm the watch page is accessible, and monitor outbound traffic, disk use, encoder logs, and local recording growth.
- If the stream stops or quality degrades, use the logs and live health information to distinguish a media or encoder problem from a network or service restart; verify the playlist and output settings before bringing the encoder back up.
YouTube recommends checking stream accessibility and continuously monitoring quality. A process manager can restart a failed encoder process, but that alone does not establish that the broadcast, media, network, or YouTube archive is healthy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining a VPS, encoder, manifest, and recording policy is more work than you want, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
