Put durable team guidance in a repository-level CLAUDE.md, then use imports to keep detailed instructions organized. A useful prompt pack makes project conventions easy to find, specific enough to follow, and simple to update as the codebase changes.
Where should shared Claude Code instructions live?
Anthropic documents CLAUDE.md as project memory: a place for instructions Claude Code should use when working in a project. The memory guide gives project architecture, coding standards, and common workflows as examples. Keep the shared starting point in the repository so teammates can work from the same guidance. See Anthropic’s Claude Code memory guide.

Think of the file as an index and a set of high-value rules, not a transcript of everything the team knows. It should orient Claude Code to the project and point to more detailed material where needed.

Anthropic’s prompt guidance recommends clear, direct instructions and examples. It also describes using structure such as XML tags to distinguish instructions, context, examples, and inputs when that separation helps. Apply those ideas to the team’s own conventions rather than treating any one layout as mandatory. The Anthropic prompting guide covers these general principles.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Project purpose and architecture
Give a short description of what the project does and explain the parts Claude Code needs to understand before making changes. Prefer details that help it choose where work belongs over broad background that does not affect a task.
Coding conventions
Replace vague directions such as “write clean code” with observable choices: the established pattern to follow, where related logic belongs, or what a change should preserve. Include exceptions only when they clarify a real decision.

Routine workflows
Document common tasks the team expects Claude Code to assist with, such as the project’s established development workflow. Keep steps aligned with current practice, and link or import deeper instructions rather than duplicating a long procedure in the entry point.
Examples of preferred requests
Include a small number of examples that show the team’s expected level of context and the form of a useful result. Keep examples representative and update them when conventions change; stale examples can teach the wrong behavior.

How can you keep the pack readable and current?
Claude Code memory files can import other files. Use that capability to keep CLAUDE.md concise while organizing detailed guidance in separate documents. For example, the entry point can direct Claude Code to focused files for architecture, conventions, or a recurring workflow. The memory guide also recommends regular review so the information remains current.
Assign a clear owner or review responsibility as a team practice. Revisit the pack when tools, conventions, or workflows change, and remove instructions that no longer describe the project. This is a practical maintenance approach, not a prescribed Anthropic review schedule.

How do teammates start Claude Code with the pack?
Claude Code can be started from the CLI with an initial query. The team should agree on its startup and permission expectations so a shared prompt pack does not leave individual users guessing about how a session begins or what it may do. Anthropic’s CLI reference documents command-line usage; consult the current reference for exact syntax because CLI options may change.

When should you add MCP prompts?
MCP is optional. A configured MCP server can make prompts it supplies available as slash commands, and project configuration can be committed so teammates share that setup. This is a separate mechanism from repository-level project memory: use CLAUDE.md for durable project guidance, and add MCP when connected tools provide reusable prompts that are useful to the team. See Anthropic’s Claude Code MCP guide.
Quick Recap
| Approach | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Project CLAUDE.md and imported files |
Durable, repository-level team guidance | The team must keep the files accurate and organized. |
| MCP server prompts exposed as slash commands | Optional reusable prompts supplied by connected tools | Requires a configured MCP server and is distinct from basic project memory. |
Team review checklist
- Instructions describe specific choices or steps rather than relying on broad adjectives.
- Examples reflect the project’s current conventions.
- The entry point is concise, with detailed guidance organized in imports where appropriate.
- Someone is responsible for reviewing the pack when tools or workflows change.
- Teammates understand the expected startup and permission practices.
- MCP is included only if the team has a configured server and a clear use for its prompts.
