NGINX Gateway Fabric implements the Kubernetes Gateway API with NGINX as its data plane: you define traffic entry points and routing with Kubernetes resources, while the controller provisions the NGINX resources that handle traffic. It can organize connectivity, but it does not remove the need to choose a supported version, configure network exposure, and plan production security.
How NGINX Gateway Fabric handles traffic
F5 describes NGINX Gateway Fabric as “a Kubernetes Gateway API implementation which uses NGINX as the data plane.” The fabric controller observes Gateway API resources. When a Gateway is attached to the fabric’s GatewayClass, the controller creates an NGINX deployment and Service in that Gateway’s namespace. Each Gateway can provision a separate data plane, which lets operators define distinct traffic entry points and isolate their configuration where appropriate. F5’s gateway architecture documentation explains the relationship between the resources.

A Gateway does not, by itself, guarantee that clients outside the cluster can reach an application. The Service type, the cluster’s networking and the environment’s load-balancing support all affect reachability. Application routes are expressed separately: HTTPRoute resources can attach to a Gateway and direct matching requests to application backends.

Compatibility is version-specific. F5’s technical specifications list NGINX Gateway Fabric 2.7.2 as compatible with Gateway API 1.6.1 and Kubernetes 1.32 or later; the same release table lists NGINX Open Source 1.31.6. These are the versions in the documentation checked in 2026, not a timeless compatibility guarantee. Confirm the current technical specifications and supported-version table before choosing versions or relying on support for a particular route or policy.

- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
Install the standard Gateway API custom resource definitions (CRDs) before installing the fabric, and use a Gateway API version supported by the selected fabric release. The Helm installation guide documents Helm 3.0 or later, with separate installation paths for NGINX Open Source and NGINX Plus. The Plus path requires additional setup. Choose between them based on licensing or subscription requirements and the features your deployment needs; the documentation does not establish a universal winner.
Choose how Gateway traffic reaches the cluster
The Helm guide documents LoadBalancer as the default Service type for a Gateway and NodePort as an alternative. The appropriate choice depends on what the cluster supports, how clients reach it, and how your team operates network access.

| Service type | What to verify |
|---|---|
| LoadBalancer | Confirm that the cluster environment provides a load-balancer implementation and that its assigned address is reachable from the intended clients. This is the documented chart default. |
| NodePort | Confirm that clients can reach the relevant node addresses and allocated ports, and that firewall and network policies permit the intended traffic. The chart documents this as an alternative. |
Neither choice is universally preferable: a Service declaration only helps if the cluster’s network path makes it reachable and your operational controls support it. See the Helm guide’s Service configuration when setting the Gateway Service type.
Install and try it without treating the quick start as production guidance
F5’s quick start says, “This document is for trying out NGINX Gateway Fabric, and not intended for a production environment.” Its local example uses kind and calls for Docker, kubectl, Helm, Go and curl. It demonstrates the basic sequence—install Gateway API resources, install the chart, create a Gateway with an HTTP listener, then attach HTTPRoute resources—but a working local example is not a production deployment plan. Follow the quick start for a trial and the installation guide for installation choices. For production, configure secure authentication certificates as appropriate to your environment.

- Design for Raspberry Pi: Supports installation of 4 Raspberry Pis and 4 ssds, compatible with any 2.5” Solid State Drive (7mm/9mm) and Rpi 4B/3B+, and other B/B+ models.
- The SSD mounting bracket also has two holes reserved for the SD card extension adapter ASIN: B09CKRDFTH, which allows you to access the SD card from the front of the rack.
- Easy to Setup: Just use two included thumbscrews to mount the rackmount, which adopts a screw-in design, which helps you install and replace quickly and easily, no tools needed!
- Applications: This is a hardware solution to get ingenious use of the Raspberry Pi, with this kit and open source software OpenMediaVault, you can use the Pi as a NAS Server, Surveillance station, or even a Web server.
- Optional accessories: Single mounting bracket: B09GFQLPTY; Micro SD card extension adapter ASIN: B09CKRDFTH. I/O Panel: B09FXRQPFM
- Verify versions and prerequisites. Select a supported Kubernetes and Gateway API combination using the current technical specifications; ensure Helm 3.0 or later is available if using Helm.
- Install the Gateway API CRDs first. Use the version supported by the NGINX Gateway Fabric release you selected, as described in the Helm installation instructions.
- Install NGINX Gateway Fabric. Follow the documented Open Source or Plus path, accounting for the additional setup required by the Plus path.
- Configure the Gateway’s network exposure. Decide whether the Gateway Service should use LoadBalancer or NodePort based on cluster support and the route clients need to take into the cluster.
- Create and connect traffic resources. Define a Gateway with the needed listener, then attach HTTPRoute resources for application traffic. Validate routing and reachability in your own cluster before relying on it.
Review extensions and telemetry for your environment
The API reference lists extension resources including AuthenticationFilter, RateLimitPolicy, UpstreamSettingsPolicy, WAFPolicy and ObservabilityPolicy. Their presence in the API is not evidence that every feature is enabled, appropriate, or supported in every configuration. Check the relevant extension documentation and version compatibility before adopting a resource.
F5’s product telemetry documentation says telemetry is enabled by default, sent once every 24 hours to an F5-managed service over HTTPS, and can be disabled during installation. F5 also states that it does not collect personally identifiable information. Review the vendor’s details and your organization’s privacy requirements when planning a deployment.

When this approach fits
NGINX Gateway Fabric is relevant when a team wants to use Kubernetes Gateway API resources with NGINX handling data-plane traffic, and can operate the controller, its generated deployments and Services, and the cluster networking behind them. The docs establish supported versions, resource behavior and installation paths; they do not establish performance benchmarks or prove that it will simplify every deployment or replace an existing ingress solution. Evaluate it against the routes, policies, exposure model and operational requirements you actually need.
