Keep approved visual-test baselines as versioned assets with stable names that identify the UI state and rendering project. Compare them in a controlled environment, decide which branch supplies the accepted reference, and require review before updating snapshots. For a small team, Playwright snapshots committed beside tests are a practical starting point; hosted services such as Chromatic and Percy provide alternate branch-aware histories and approval workflows.
Choose where baselines live
Keep Playwright snapshots with their tests
Playwright stores snapshots in a directory alongside the test file by default. Commit that directory to Git so reviewers can inspect image changes with the code that caused them. If that layout does not suit a larger repository, configure snapshotPathTemplate to place snapshots consistently elsewhere. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

Use a hosted service when its workflow fits
Chromatic links snapshots to Git commits and documents branch-specific baseline behavior. Percy offers different approval units depending on its mode: Git mode approves or rejects a complete build, while Visual Git supports approval of individual snapshots. These are workflow differences, not interchangeable ways of storing the same files; choose based on who approves changes and how much history the team wants to manage. See Chromatic’s branch and baseline rules and BrowserStack’s Percy baseline-management overview.

Give every baseline a stable identity
A useful identity tells a reviewer what UI state was captured and under which rendering project it was produced. Use descriptive test or component names rather than generated labels that are difficult to map back to the interface. Include browser and platform in the filename or path, or use the project name for multi-project Playwright configurations. Playwright documents these approaches in its snapshot guidance.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Also make environment part of the comparison key. Browser, operating system, fonts, and rendering configuration can change pixels without a product regression. Record the relevant project context through your test configuration and naming convention, and avoid comparing a baseline produced under one setup against captures from another.
Keep capture and comparison environments consistent
Generate baselines and run comparisons in the same environment whenever possible. Playwright explicitly recommends using the same environment for both; a CI container can help keep runs consistent across operating systems. Treat changes to the browser version, OS image, font stack, or rendering settings as a deliberate migration: establish a new controlled baseline rather than accepting unexplained widespread diffs. Playwright’s continuous integration guidance covers CI setup.
Hosted capture can centralize review, but check the service’s capture and environment settings against the match your tests require. Chromatic describes cloud capture for Playwright tests in its Playwright setup documentation.

Define branch ownership and inheritance
Write down which baseline a feature branch should compare against. Common policies include the branch’s own last accepted baseline, the baseline of the branch from which it started, or the latest accepted baseline merged from an integration branch. Do not leave this implicit: two developers may otherwise interpret the same visual change against different references.
With repository-managed snapshots, branch behavior follows your Git conventions and the snapshot files selected for that branch. Hosted services may apply their own baseline-history rules. Chromatic documents that merge shape and configuration can affect baseline selection; rewriting Git history without a follow-up build can also leave its baseline history divergent. Review its branching and baselines documentation before choosing a merge or rebase policy.
Make updates reviewable, not automatic approvals
Update a reference only after a reviewer confirms that the new appearance is intended. In Playwright, --update-snapshots regenerates references; running that command is not approval by itself. Include changed images with the UI change in the pull request, explain intentional visual differences, and investigate unexpected changes before committing updated references.

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
In hosted workflows, choose the approval unit deliberately. Percy’s Git strategy treats approval as a whole-build decision, while Visual Git allows snapshot-level decisions. BrowserStack recommends Git for most teams and Visual Git when tests run separately from the development pipeline or snapshots are approved individually. Confirm that the chosen granularity matches how your team reviews visual changes: Percy baseline management.

Preserve Git context in CI
Visual workflows can use commits and pull requests to associate builds with branches and select baselines. Chromatic says Git must be available to its CLI for commit and pull-request association, so ensure CI checks out repository metadata rather than running without it. Playwright supports CI runs in containers and after successful deployments, including tests against a deployment target URL; see Chromatic’s Playwright setup and Playwright CI documentation.
A practical setup checklist
- Choose storage: commit Playwright snapshots beside tests, customize
snapshotPathTemplate, or use a hosted service whose history and approval model fit your team. - Name the reference: use a stable test or component identity and include browser, platform, or project context.
- Pin the comparison environment: run baseline generation and CI comparison with the same browser and rendering setup; use a container where useful.
- Set branch policy: state which branch baseline is inherited and how accepted changes reach other branches.
- Protect updates: review diffs and require explicit approval before regenerated snapshots become the new reference.
- Keep Git metadata available: configure CI checkout and build association when the selected hosted workflow depends on commits or pull requests.
Troubleshooting common baseline problems
Many snapshots change without a corresponding UI change
Check whether the browser, operating system, fonts, or rendering configuration changed between baseline generation and comparison. Restore the controlled environment or intentionally establish a new baseline after validating the migration.

A feature branch shows unexpected differences after merging
Check the team’s documented inheritance policy and the service’s branch-selection rules. For Chromatic, inspect how the merge shape and configuration affect the selected baseline; if Git history was rewritten, a follow-up build may be needed to realign its baseline history.
A hosted build is not associated with its pull request or commit
Verify that CI provides Git data to the service’s CLI. Chromatic explicitly requires Git availability for commit and pull-request association.

If you need a clean capture of a page for inspection or documentation rather than a repository-managed visual-test baseline, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo.

Can a ScreenshotNeo capture replace committed Playwright visual snapshots?
No. A one-off API capture does not establish the repository-managed snapshot identity, environment, and review workflow described above.
