To keep Chrome bookmarks available on your computer, Android device, and iPhone or iPad, sign in to Chrome with the same Google Account on each device and check the sync settings. On a computer, use the bookmark manager to sort links into a few clear folders; export bookmarks to an HTML file before major cleanup or when you need a separate backup.
1. Sign in to the same Google Account on each device
Chrome can save bookmarks to your Google Account so they’re available on devices where you’re signed in. If you use Chrome without signing in, bookmarks can remain only on that device. Google also describes saving existing local Chrome information to your account after you sign in on a computer. Google’s explanation of Chrome sign-in and its computer sync instructions cover these behaviors.

On each device, confirm that Chrome is signed in to the intended account. If you use more than one Google Account, signing in to a different one can make bookmarks appear to be missing even though they remain associated with another account. Review the saved-data or sync preferences as well: the available controls and wording depend on the platform.

Open Chrome and select the profile control to check which account is signed in. Use Chrome’s sync or saved-data settings to review what is being saved. Google’s computer instructions describe these controls and the option to save existing local information to the account: Get your bookmarks, passwords and more on all your devices.

2. Choose a folder system you can maintain
A small set of meaningful folders is easier to scan than a long list of nearly identical categories. For example, you might keep frequently used links on the bookmarks bar and put less-used links into folders such as Work, Reading, or Trips. Create subfolders only when a category grows enough to benefit from them; otherwise, nesting makes bookmarks harder to find.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOn a computer, create folders in the bookmark manager and move links into them. Chrome also lets you drag bookmarks between locations or use its navigation panel. These are organizational choices, not required categories or rules.

3. Add, find, edit, sort, move, and delete bookmarks on a computer
To save a page, select the bookmark control in Chrome’s address bar and choose where to place it. To manage saved links, open Chrome’s bookmark manager from the browser menu’s bookmarks controls. Google’s current desktop guidance describes the available actions and navigation options: Create, find and edit bookmarks in Chrome.
- Find a bookmark: Look on the bookmarks bar, browse in the bookmark manager or navigation panel, or type
@bookmarksin the address bar and search by keywords where that option is available. - Sort bookmarks: The navigation panel offers choices including newest, oldest, last opened, A to Z, and Z to A. The menu also includes sorting by name.
- Edit or move a bookmark: Change its name or folder in the bookmark controls, or drag it to another folder or location.
- Show or hide the bookmarks bar: Use Chrome’s bookmark controls to change whether the bar appears beneath the address bar.
- Delete carefully: Google says a deleted bookmark cannot be recovered. Export an HTML copy first if you want a backup before a large cleanup.
4. Export bookmarks for a backup or browser move
Account sync makes bookmarks convenient to access in Chrome on signed-in devices. An HTML export gives you a separate file that you can keep as a backup or import into another browser. Google documents both export and import: Import Chrome bookmarks and settings.

Google also offers an optional passphrase for Chrome data protected by it. Google says this can prevent Google from reading that protected Chrome data; it does not mean every kind of Google Account data is covered. The sign-in guidance notes that Google Wallet payment methods and addresses are excluded from passphrase encryption. Review how Chrome sign-in works and the computer sync information before choosing a passphrase, since privacy and access implications depend on what you protect.
