First identify which Google service you use. Google Books on the web stores titles in personal collections, while Google Play Books uses shelves and adds reading-progress filters, downloads, series tools and bulk actions. The menus and what happens when you hide, delete, download or export a book differ between them. The sections below give the correct procedure for each service.
Google Books and Google Play Books are different libraries
People often use “Google Books library” to describe two related products. Your web-based Google Books library is centered on collections such as Reading list and Books you’ve read. Google Play Books is the ebook-reading service, with shelves, device synchronization, progress states and offline downloads. A title saved in one service is not necessarily managed through the same menu in the other.

Organize a library in Google Books on the web
Open Your library and review the built-in collections
- Open Google Books and choose Your library.
- Review the existing collections, including Reading list and Books you’ve read.
- Open a collection to see the books already assigned to it. Use collection search when you need to locate a title without browsing the entire list.
Collections are labels for organizing titles; they do not create a second copy of a book. A single book can belong to one or several collections, so you can place a novel in both a genre collection and a current-reading collection.

Create a collection
- From Your library, choose the option to create a new collection.
- Enter a collection name. Use a name that describes a decision you will make later, such as “Read next,” “Reference,” “Short stories” or “2026 reading.”
- Add an optional description if the purpose will not be obvious from the name.
- Save the collection, then add books to it from each title’s menu.
Keep names mutually exclusive when you want a clean browse experience. For example, use “To read” for status and “History” for subject rather than creating several collections that mix both ideas. Because books can be in multiple collections, you can still combine those dimensions without duplicating entries.
Add or remove a book
To add a title, open the book’s menu and select the existing collection, or create a new one from that flow. To remove it, open the relevant collection, open the book’s More menu and choose Remove from collection. Removing a title from one collection does not remove it from other collections.
Search, share and delete collections
Use the search control inside a collection to find a title in that group. A collection can be made public with its sharing control, so check the visibility setting before sharing a collection that reveals your reading interests.
Deleting a user-created collection has a more serious effect than removing one book: Google says the deletion also removes the books, labels and notes inside that collection. If you only want to change the organization, remove titles individually instead of deleting the collection. Google documents XML export for bookshelves in Classic Google Books; the documented path requires switching back to that classic interface before exporting.
Export a Google Books bookshelf when you need a backup
XML export is documented for bookshelves in Classic Google Books, not as a general export button in every current view. Switch to the classic interface first, then follow the bookshelf export path shown there. Treat the XML as a record of bookshelf data rather than a portable ebook file: it does not turn a web collection into EPUB or PDF reading files. If you are trying to preserve titles, labels and notes before reorganizing, export first and then make changes.
Organize Google Play Books with shelves
Create a shelf on Android
- Open the Play Books app and go to Library.
- Open Shelves, then choose Create New.
- Enter the shelf name and save it.
- Select one or more books, choose Add to shelf, and select the shelf you created.
Shelves are user-created groups. A book can be assigned to more than one shelf, allowing combinations such as “Unread,” “Science fiction” and “Vacation downloads.”
Create and fill a shelf on a computer
- Open your Play Books library in a browser and go to the Shelves area.
- Create a shelf and give it a name.
- Select a title, open More, and choose Add to shelves.
- Choose one or more shelves and confirm.
Use an iPhone or iPad
The Google Play Books help instructions also include shelf creation and assignment for iPhone and iPad. Open the app’s library and look for the shelves control; select a title and use its organization menu to add it to a shelf. Labels can vary by app release, so update the app and consult the current in-app help if the shelves button is not visible. The same principle applies as on Android: shelves are groups, and adding a title to one does not require removing it from another.

Open the shelf, select the title, and choose Remove from this shelf. This changes the shelf membership, not your ownership of the book. If the same book is on another shelf, it remains there.

Manage many Play Books titles at once on Android
Android supports bulk actions, which is faster than opening each title separately.
- In Library, press and hold a book to enter selection mode.
- Tap additional titles to select them.
- Choose the action you need. Available actions can include adding to a shelf, downloading, removing a download, marking books finished or not finished, changing Family Library sharing, or hiding titles.
- Review the selection before confirming, especially for hide, download removal and Family Library changes.
Bulk selection is useful after importing or purchasing several books, but it is also easy to apply the wrong status to a mixed selection. If a group contains both finished and unfinished books, split it before using Mark finished or Mark not finished. The same caution applies to downloads: select only titles you genuinely need offline, because downloaded files consume local storage.
Find books again with Play Books filters and views
Filter by attributes and reading progress
Play Books provides filters for genre, author, progress and other attributes available in your account. On the computer, open the filters at the top of the library and use the Not Started progress view to find books you have not opened. Filters are especially useful when a shelf is large or when a title’s shelf name is less reliable than its metadata.

If a title disappears, clear filters before assuming it was removed; a filtered result is not the same as the full library.
Browse a series in the right order
On Android, open the series view to browse titles together. You can filter by ownership, distinguishing books you own from books that are available but not owned, and sort a series by series order or reverse series order. Use series order before starting a long sequence; publication order and recommended reading order are not always identical, so follow the order shown for that series when it matches the publisher’s numbering.
Use the alphabetical index for large filtered lists
In list view, an alphabetical index for title or author appears when more than 25 books remain after filtering. Google’s help page specifies app version 2023.04.17.00 or later for this index. If the index is absent, switch to list view, reduce or remove filters to check how many books remain, and update the app if necessary. The index is useful for jumping through a long author list, but it is not a substitute for accurate shelf names or metadata.
Check version-dependent features
Some Android filters require app version 5.3 or later. Applying multiple filters quickly requires version 2023.04.17.00 or later. These thresholds describe the versions identified in Google’s help documentation and may change as the app is updated. Check Play Store → profile picture → Manage apps & device before troubleshooting a missing filter. An older app can still show your books while lacking newer sorting, filtering or indexing controls.

When uncertain, hide or remove the download first. Those choices are easier to reverse than permanent deletion, and they avoid confusing a storage problem with an ownership problem.

Hiding, deleting and removing a download are not the same
Hide a purchased title
Hiding removes a purchased Play Books title from the normal library and from devices, but keeps it on the hidden shelf on the web. Use this when you want a cleaner everyday view without giving up the purchase. A hidden book is not permanently erased.
Permanently delete a title
Permanent deletion is a separate action performed through the web library. Google’s computer guidance says a permanently deleted title is removed from the Google Play library on all devices. Treat this as an irreversible cleanup decision: hiding is the safer choice when you may want the purchase later.
Remove only an offline copy
Removing a download leaves the title in your library and only frees local storage. It is appropriate when you still want the book available for streaming or later re-download. Do not use hide or delete merely to reclaim space.

Play Books supports offline reading. On Android, select books and use the download action; bulk selection lets you download several at once. In the app settings, enable the Wi-Fi-only option if you want to avoid using mobile data. Supported devices may also offer an option to store new downloads on an SD card.
Changing the storage setting does not move existing files automatically. Remove the old downloads and download them again after selecting SD-card storage if you need to relocate them. Availability depends on the device and app, so the SD-card control may not appear on every phone or tablet. Check free space before a large batch download, and remember that removing a download does not remove the title from your account.
Export books and understand portability limits
Eligible purchased ebooks can be exported from the Play Books web library as EPUB or PDF. Export is title-dependent:
- Some publishers disable export.
- Rented books cannot be exported.
- Large files may also be ineligible.
- Some exports arrive as an ASCM file and require Adobe Digital Editions to download and open the licensed ebook.
Exporting is not a guarantee that a file will work on every reader. Google states that most books from Google Play cannot be opened on Kindle devices. Check the export options for the individual title before deleting a cloud copy or planning a device migration. An export option missing for one title does not mean your entire library is ineligible; restrictions are applied title by title.

- Subject: A few durable genres or reference categories.
- Series: Let the series view provide order instead of making a separate shelf for every installment.
- Offline: A shelf for books you intend to keep downloaded, paired with the app’s actual download status.
When adding a new title, assign its status and subject immediately. Once a month, use the Not Started filter to find forgotten books, review downloaded files against available storage, and remove titles from temporary shelves when their purpose ends. On the web, review public collection settings before sharing a library link. On Android, use bulk selection for routine changes but confirm destructive actions one group at a time.
Keep naming conventions consistent: choose either “To read” or “Unread,” not both, and use the same capitalization for comparable shelves. Let a title belong to multiple groups when it genuinely serves more than one purpose; avoid creating near-duplicate shelves that make future searches harder. For a large library, combine a durable subject shelf with progress filters instead of creating a shelf for every month or trip.

A book appears in the wrong product
Confirm whether you saved it in Google Books or purchased it through Play Books. Google Books collections and Play Books shelves are separate organization systems, so adding a title in one does not create a matching group in the other.

A shelf or filter is missing
Update the Play Books app, switch to the correct Library view, and check the version requirement for the feature. Filters and the alphabetical index can depend on Android version, app version, list view and the number of books left after filtering.
A hidden title seems lost
Open the Play Books web library and check the hidden shelf. Hiding removes the title from the normal library and devices but does not permanently delete it.
An exported file will not open
Check whether the title is rented, publisher-restricted or too large for export. If the download is ASCM, use Adobe Digital Editions. Also verify that your target device supports the file and its licensing; Kindle compatibility is not universal for Play Books purchases.
Downloads use more data or storage than expected
Enable Wi-Fi-only downloads, remove offline copies you no longer need, and check whether your device supports SD-card storage. Existing downloads remain where they were saved until you remove and download them again.

A collection disappeared after cleanup
If you deleted a user-created Google Books collection, the books, labels and notes inside it may have been deleted with the collection. For future reorganizing, remove individual titles instead of deleting the entire collection, and use Classic Google Books XML bookshelf export first when you need a record.
