For a local, automated YouTube playlist, organize and audit your files first, then load the videos into OBS Studio’s VLC Video source. VLC must be installed, and OBS documents loop and shuffle controls for that source. OBS plays and encodes the feed; YouTube hosts the live broadcast. Keeping those jobs separate makes it easier to find whether a problem is in the files, playback, encoding, or delivery.
1. Organize the video library before building the playlist
OBS does not require a particular folder structure or filename scheme. A consistent catalog is still valuable: it helps you confirm what is queued, spot missing or duplicate files, and put episodes or related clips in the intended order.

Use names that explain both content and sequence
Choose a pattern you can apply across the collection, such as Series - Topic - 001 - Title.mp4. Include sequence numbers where order matters, and keep titles meaningful enough to identify a file without opening it. Use leading zeroes (001, 002) so names sort predictably in file managers. These are organizational suggestions, not OBS requirements.
Keep an inventory and divide the collection when useful
Maintain a simple catalog with each filename, its topic or series, and any sequence number. Split a very large collection into themed groups or separate playlists if that makes review and scheduling easier. OBS’s documentation describes playlist functionality but does not specify a maximum playlist size or a built-in rule for turning a folder into an automatically maintained playlist.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Plan storage and backups around your own library
Keep the media in a stable location and retain a backup if losing the collection would be costly. An external drive may suit some libraries, but there is no universally required capacity, drive type, speed, or model established here; choose storage based on your files and backup needs. If you move or rename files after adding them to a playlist, check that the source paths still resolve.
2. Build an ordered, looping playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. For 64-bit OBS, the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source. In your OBS scene, add a VLC Video source, then add the video files you want in its playlist. Consult the OBS Media Sources guide for the current controls: OBS Project: Media Sources.
- Set playback behavior. Choose Loop if playback should restart after the final item. Choose Shuffle only if randomized order is appropriate; it is not a substitute for a deliberate sequence.
- Check what happens when the source is hidden. OBS documents options to continue, pause, or stop playback while the source is not visible. Set this deliberately, especially if scenes switch during the stream.
- Review the queue. Confirm the first few items and the intended transitions, then check that the playlist’s final item leads to the expected behavior at the end of the queue.
For dependable ordering, number files and inspect the playlist itself rather than assuming a folder’s display order will become the desired playback order. OBS documentation does not establish a folder-watching feature that automatically adds new files to the playlist.

3. Connect OBS playback to a YouTube live broadcast
The local playlist and the YouTube event are separate parts of the workflow. OBS plays the source files, composes the scene, encodes the audio and video, and sends that feed. YouTube’s documentation distinguishes a liveBroadcast (the viewer-facing event) from a liveStream (the incoming audio-video feed); it also describes binding them and documents an ongoing 24/7-feed use case. See Google for Developers: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
- Create or configure the YouTube live broadcast. Use YouTube’s live-stream setup to create the event and obtain the connection details for your encoder.
- Configure OBS for that broadcast. Enter the stream connection details in OBS using YouTube’s current encoder workflow. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- Choose settings your connection can sustain. YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution, codec, and frame rate. Check the current table before setting the encoder, and select a bitrate reliable for your actual upload connection rather than choosing a higher setting it cannot hold. YouTube recommends RTMPS for its general encoder workflow. Reference: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Test before going live. Preview representative clips with both movement and audio. Confirm that the video fits the scene, audio is audible, and the stream reaches YouTube before relying on it for a long run.
- Monitor stream health. During the event, check YouTube’s health indicators as well as OBS playback. YouTube’s API exposes stream state and health fields, including configuration issues, which can help separate delivery trouble from a local playlist problem: Google for Developers: LiveStreams.
YouTube’s ingest settings can change, so use its current guidance when configuring a real broadcast. The HLS ingestion workflow is a separate protocol-level option, not a way to organize local video files; most users building an OBS playlist do not need to implement it.

4. Troubleshoot the failure at the right layer
| Symptom | Likely area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source choices | Local software dependency | Install VLC and verify that its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. |
| A playlist item does not play | File path or media playback | Confirm the file still exists at the path in the playlist. If files were moved or renamed, restore the path or update the playlist; test the item locally. |
| Videos play in an unexpected order | Playlist organization | Review the order in the VLC Video source, turn off shuffle for sequential playback, and use consistent sequence numbers when assembling the queue. |
| Playback pauses or stops after a scene change | Source visibility behavior | Check whether the VLC Video source is configured to continue, pause, or stop while hidden, and choose the behavior that matches your scene setup. |
| OBS plays correctly, but YouTube reports a problem | Encoder or delivery | Check YouTube’s stream health and configuration issues, then verify the broadcast connection details and that the selected encoder settings are supported and sustainable on your upload connection. |
| Video reaches YouTube but audio or motion is unreliable | Test coverage or stream settings | Test representative moving footage and audio before the event; compare resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate with YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. |
5. A cloud option when the home computer should not run continuously
For a local DIY setup, OBS needs access to the media files and the computer must remain available to play, encode, and send the feed. If you want uploaded recordings to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a home computer or connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.
- Nothing has to stay on at home.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded, at one flat price per slot.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.

6. Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Before scheduling a large playlist, verify that you have the rights needed to stream every video and its audio. A file being stored locally does not establish permission to broadcast it. Also assess whether the channel’s content meets YouTube’s current policies, including rules relevant to reused content and monetization; a technically healthy stream does not guarantee policy eligibility. Use YouTube’s current policy guidance for your channel and region before making a long-running broadcast.
