How DoorDash text ordering works
In its September 30, 2026 announcement, DoorDash described a text-based consumer ordering experience powered by AI. Instead of starting with a restaurant search, you can text what you want—such as a particular dish, a type of meal, or a request for a local recommendation. DoorDash says it searches nearby restaurants and their menus, then suggests a cart in the conversation.

1. Apply for beta access
Use the waitlist linked from DoorDash’s announcement. The company says U.S. users can apply, but does not promise immediate admission or state that the feature is open to everyone.
2. Text what you want
Once you have access, describe your order in ordinary language. DoorDash says you can ask for a specific dish, request a recommendation based on your mood, or say “order my usual.” You do not need to phrase the request as a rigid command.

3. Review the suggestions
DoorDash says the service searches local restaurants and scans menus to build a suggested cart. It can also text food photos from a restaurant’s DoorDash store page. Check the restaurant, items, quantities, and any other order details against what you intended before moving ahead.
4. Confirm and check out in the thread
DoorDash says customers can confirm the order and complete checkout in the text conversation without opening the app. Treat the proposed cart as something to review, not an automatic order: confirm only when the items and details are right.

What the text-ordering beta says it can do
DoorDash describes the experience as able to draw on a person’s usual picks and saved preferences. For group orders, the company says it can handle multiple quantities and mixed dietary preferences; it also says some users may receive proactive prompts about a usual order. These are capabilities described by DoorDash, not independently verified results.

DoorDash has several distinct ordering and delivery paths. They differ by audience and availability, and should not be treated as interchangeable.

What DoorDash MCP allows an organization to do
MCP is a separate developer integration, not another way to join the consumer text beta. DoorDash’s MCP documentation describes a private beta for corporate and organizational ordering and says consumer-facing integrations are not currently supported. After a user authorizes a connected client, documented agent capabilities include searching, building a cart, managing delivery details, submitting an order, checking status, retrieving a receipt, and reordering.
DoorDash documents OAuth authorization for MCP. It says the agent acts with a user-scoped token rather than directly receiving or handling the user’s DoorDash credentials. That authorization model is specific to the MCP integration; it is not a requirement users need to configure for the consumer text beta.
