To improve YouTube livestream quality, match your codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to the upload bandwidth and encoding capacity you can sustain—not simply the highest settings available. Leave network headroom, test with realistic motion and audio, check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, and monitor stream health while live. If viewers report buffering or poor quality, first determine whether the issue affects one viewer, one network, or viewers across different networks.
Choose settings that your connection and encoder can sustain
Live settings work as a set: codec, ingestion resolution, frame rate, and bitrate all affect the bandwidth and processing needed to deliver a stable stream. YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, and up to 60 frames per second. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its published figures are starting targets, not a guarantee that a particular connection or computer can sustain them.

Check upload bandwidth and leave headroom
YouTube says total outbound stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Measure upload capacity where and when you will stream; download speed does not tell you how much upstream capacity the encoder has. Other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. A speed test is a useful check, but it does not guarantee the connection will sustain the same rate throughout a broadcast.
If your setup sends a primary and backup stream, count both bitrates before applying the headroom margin. YouTube’s streaming advice is to account for primary plus backup plus 20% when using a backup encoder. See YouTube Help: Streaming tips.

Pick resolution and frame rate for the content
Higher resolution and frame rate can require more bitrate and encoder capacity. Choose a combination suited to the material and available connection; a lower, stable setting is preferable to a high setting that repeatedly drops frames or loses connection. Test using the actual scenes, movement, audio, and overlays you plan to broadcast.
Use appropriate keyframes, audio, and color settings
- Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- For SDR, YouTube’s advanced guidance specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR. Its guidance specifies 10-bit HDR.
- For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio, it recommends 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 over RTMP or RTMPS requires AAC.
- Advanced guidance also includes square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. These settings may be handled by the encoder or workflow rather than exposed as manual controls.
- For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S), notes that AV1 is not supported for HDR, and describes HLS as an option when an encoder lacks required RTMP capabilities. AV1 streams at 3840×2160 and above require at least two tile columns.
How do I stop my YouTube livestream from buffering?
First decide whether buffering is happening for one viewer, people on one shared network, or viewers using different networks. That distinction helps separate a local playback problem from an audience-network or stream-wide issue.

Connect the TWC29 via its 5ft USB cable to a USB 2.0, 3.0, or 3.1 port—and use OTG with supported mobile devices—and you're ready to go. The adjustable universal clip attaches firmly to laptops and desktop monitors, giving you a stable mounting point out of the box.
- One viewer reports buffering: ask what device, app, and connection they are using, then compare with your own playback. The cause may be local to that viewer.
- Several viewers on one network report it: investigate that network’s capacity and competing traffic.
- Viewers on different networks report it: check the encoder output, YouTube stream health, source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, local archive, and outbound connection.
YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. Choose lower latency when quicker interaction matters enough to accept that tradeoff; if audience interaction is not central, prioritize playback resilience. YouTube’s improve-for-low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams, which use normal latency. See YouTube Help: Stream latency.

Check the image being sent by the encoder before changing multiple settings. If it already looks blurry in the encoder preview or local recording, inspect the camera, video source, scaling, and encoder settings. If the source looks clear but the stream does not, compare the selected bitrate with YouTube’s recommended target for that codec, resolution, and frame rate, and check stream-health messages for connection or encoding problems. Viewers may also see different playback quality depending on their playback conditions; compare from more than one viewer device or network before concluding the whole stream is affected.

Preflight the stream before the scheduled start
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use that time to verify the entire path, not just whether the encoder says it is connected.
- Select a sustainable configuration: choose codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on measured upload capacity and the 20% headroom recommendation. Include a backup bitrate in the calculation if applicable.
- Test the full scene: send representative motion and audio, and check overlays, audio routing, and any backup path. YouTube Help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Check Live Control Room: inspect the preview and stream-health messages before telling viewers the event has started.
- Verify viewer playback: confirm the event appears on the channel or watch page and check playback on a viewer device, including mobile where relevant.
- Confirm local recording: make sure the archive file exists, is intact, and continues to grow while the test is running.
- Monitor during the event: keep an eye on picture, audio, health messages, encoder load, and the local recording.
- Stop in the right order: stop the YouTube event, then stop the encoder after the event has ended.
YouTube recommends testing primary-to-backup failover as part of preparation when a backup path is in use. Its operational suggestions are in Streaming tips.
Protect your stream key and choose viewer controls deliberately
A YouTube stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and authorizes YouTube to accept it; YouTube describes it as being like the stream’s password and address. Keep it secret and out of screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new key. YouTube’s stream settings also include DVR, which lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue from their paused point. Details are in YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

- The stream looks or sounds poor in the encoder: check which audio and video sources are routed to it, review encoder errors, inspect CPU load, and check the local archive. Update the encoder software if needed.
- The encoder preview is healthy but the live feed degrades: test the outbound connection under stream conditions and account for competing network use. Contact your ISP if the connection itself is problematic.
- A third-party encoder will not start the stream: YouTube advises obtaining a new stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder.
- Only some viewers have trouble: compare their devices and networks with other viewers before changing encoder settings.
