One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo optimize a WordPress RSS feed, adjust its item count and full-text or excerpt setting under Settings > Reading, then open the feed URL itself to confirm the output. If you need a different structure or a new feed address, use a tested customization or redirect rather than assuming a theme’s visible feed link controls the feed.
Choose the right feed and find its URL
WordPress supports several built-in feed formats, including RSS 2.0, RSS 0.92, RDF/RSS 1.0 and Atom, as well as a separate comments feed. These endpoints are not all interchangeable: use the feed that matches your publishing or integration needs. A theme may not display a link to every supported feed, so the absence of a visible link does not establish that the feed is unavailable. See the WordPress Feeds handbook for supported feed types and template tags.

Open the intended feed URL directly in a browser to inspect what WordPress serves. This is more reliable than judging the feed only by a link shown on the site or by a reader that may retain older results.
Set the number of posts and the content length
Go to Settings > Reading. Under “Syndication feeds show the most recent,” set how many posts WordPress includes. Under “For each article in a feed, show,” choose Full text or Excerpt. These are the built-in controls for feed history depth and item content; WordPress documents both on its Settings Reading screen page.
#1 Best Overall
- Internet connectivity
- Displaying RSS feed
- Full text: includes more of each post in the feed, which can make it easier for subscribers to read without visiting the site.
- Excerpt: sends less content per item and may save bandwidth, as WordPress notes in its documentation.
- Post count: determines how many recent entries the feed contains. WordPress does not prescribe a universal ideal count. A larger number may increase response size, and feed readers can impose their own limits, so do not increase it solely to force a reader to import more history.
Choose based on the intended subscriber experience, response size, and how much recent history you want to expose. There is no documented setting that is best for every site.
Verify that the feed reflects your settings
- Save the Reading settings.
- Open the feed URL directly and check that it contains the expected number of posts and the intended amount of each post’s content.
- If a feed reader still shows the old version, compare its display with the direct response. Clear relevant caches, then check whether a plugin or theme is affecting the output.
A WordPress support thread describes caching and plugin or theme conflicts as possible explanations for stale or altered output; that is a troubleshooting example, not proof that caching is always the cause. If the direct response itself does not match the settings, investigate the active cache and plugins or theme methodically. The thread also discusses RSS template and filter examples, including the_content_feed and the_excerpt_rss; treat community code as an example to test, not as a substitute for current developer documentation. See the support discussion.

Use custom code only when the built-in controls are not enough
The Reading screen controls post count and full text versus excerpt. If you need a different arrangement of feed fields or content, WordPress treats feed customization as a separate developer task. Start with the official feeds documentation, make changes on a staging copy, and inspect the resulting feed directly before applying them to a live site. A support-forum example may point to relevant templates or filters, but it does not guarantee compatibility with your WordPress version, theme, or plugins.
If you use the WordPress RSS block to display another feed on a page or post, that changes the block’s presentation, not the content settings of your site’s own outgoing feed. The RSS block documentation covers its display controls.

Keep existing feed links working after a move
If you change a feed address during a migration, redirect the old endpoint to the correct new WordPress feed URL. This gives existing feed links a route forward. WordPress’s Feeds handbook includes rewrite examples; after configuring a redirect, test both the old address and the destination to confirm the redirect reaches the intended feed.
