Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo stop buffering, find out whether the bottleneck is the streaming device, Wi-Fi, household traffic, or the connection beyond your home. Test at the affected device while the problem is happening; then improve the Wi-Fi path, reduce competing use, and check playback settings before considering an internet-plan or equipment change.
Find out where the problem is
First note whether buffering affects one app, one device, one room, or several devices at once. A problem isolated to one device or room points first to its Wi-Fi signal, software, or playback capability. If several devices slow down together, look at shared network demand, the modem or router, an ISP outage, or congestion between your ISP and the streaming service. Netflix explains that congestion anywhere along the delivery path—not just inside the home—can affect playback (Netflix: How Netflix streams videos).
- One room or device: check its signal, connection type, software, and playback settings.
- Several devices at once: check household activity, modem/router status, and possible ISP trouble.
- One service only: compare with another service or app before assuming the home network is at fault.
Measure speed where you watch
Run a speed test on or near the affected TV, computer, or streaming device, ideally while the buffering occurs. If possible, compare a Wi-Fi test with an Ethernet test. Repeat at the time of day the problem usually appears. A result from a router or a different room may not reflect the connection at the screen.
Google cautions that speed-test results vary with the test server’s location, time, congestion, device, and Wi-Fi conditions (Google: Test internet speed and improve your Nest or Google Wifi internet connection). Treat a test as a snapshot, not a guarantee of the path to every streaming provider. Compare results with the service’s own guidance and leave capacity for other household use.

| Provider guidance | Published speed figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix playback | At least 3 Mbps for 720p HD; 5 Mbps for 1080p Full HD; 15 Mbps for 4K UHD | Netflix’s recommended stable connection speeds for its playback, not a universal guarantee (Netflix: Netflix-recommended internet speeds). |
| Google household-use estimate | 7 Mbps for one HD video stream; 25 Mbps for multiple HD video streams | Google’s practical household estimates; a different provider and context from Netflix’s resolution-specific recommendations (Google: Test internet speed and improve your Nest or Google Wifi internet connection). |
These figures are not interchangeable measurements of one fixed requirement. Actual playback can also be affected by other users, network congestion, the device, and the streaming service.
Improve the Wi-Fi connection
Change router placement
Move the router and streaming device closer together; if practical, try them in the same room. Put the router in an open spot off the floor, away from appliances and other wireless devices. Walls and metal objects can obstruct or interfere with the signal, so avoid placing the router where those barriers sit between it and the TV. Netflix and YouTube both recommend attention to distance and interference (Netflix: TV show or movie loads slowly or keeps buffering; YouTube Help: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues – Computer).

- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Try Ethernet as a comparison
If both router and playback device have Ethernet ports and you can route a suitable cable safely, connect them directly and test again. Netflix recommends wired or Wi-Fi networking where available (Netflix: How to get the best video quality). If Ethernet helps, Wi-Fi signal or interference is a likely contributor. A cable will not fix a slow ISP connection, congestion beyond the home, or a device that cannot play the desired quality.
Reduce competing network use
Pause large downloads and other high-bandwidth activity while you troubleshoot. Video calls, game downloads, online games, and simultaneous streams all share available capacity. Google suggests reviewing connected-device activity and, where supported, prioritizing a device; prioritization can manage traffic but cannot create more bandwidth (Google: Test internet speed and improve your Nest or Google Wifi internet connection; Google: Troubleshoot slow internet on Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi).

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
For a household with several active screens, do not size the connection around just one stream. Google estimates 7 Mbps for one HD video stream and 25 Mbps for multiple HD streams, while Netflix recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p Full HD playback on Netflix. Use the figures as provider-specific guidance, then account for the rest of your household’s use.
Check playback quality, plan, and device support
- Confirm your streaming subscription supports the quality you want.
- Check that every device in the playback chain supports that resolution, including the TV or display.
- Install current software and firmware for the app, playback device, and TV.
- Review the service’s profile or playback-data setting to make sure quality has not been limited.
- If you have a data cap, consider whether higher playback quality’s greater data use fits your monthly allowance.
Streaming services may adapt picture quality to connection conditions. Netflix notes that playback can start below the target resolution and rise after a short time as the stream adjusts (Netflix: How to get the best video quality). A brief soft picture at the start is not necessarily evidence of a network fault; persistent low quality or buffering warrants checking the connection and settings.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Restart and escalate if needed
- Pause competing downloads and streams, then test playback again.
- Restart the modem and router if buffering persists; allow them to reconnect fully before repeating the test.
- Check whether your ISP reports an outage.
- If several devices still struggle, contact the ISP with the affected devices, the time of the tests, the speed results, and whether each test used Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Netflix advises contacting the ISP when measured speed falls below its guidance (Netflix: TV show or movie loads slowly or keeps buffering).
- If only one device remains affected while other devices work normally, update or troubleshoot that device, or contact its manufacturer.
If you stream live, test upload capacity too
Watching video mainly uses download capacity; sending a live stream also depends on upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom between a live stream’s total bitrate and the available upload bandwidth. For example, do not plan a bitrate that consumes the full measured upload rate; the remaining capacity helps accommodate variation and other network use (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).
For live viewing, YouTube also notes that reducing latency can involve trade-offs; if a stream is unstable, prioritize a reliable connection and test the playback settings rather than assuming the highest-quality or lowest-latency option will suit every network (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues – Computer).
