1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe fastest WordPress server is not created by copying a popular configuration file. It is created by measuring a representative request, finding the layer that is limiting it, changing one thing, and measuring again. On Ubuntu, that means separating browser, web-server, page-cache, PHP-FPM, OPcache, WordPress, database, disk, and network work instead of treating “the server” as one performance problem.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Start with a baseline, then apply the smallest effective change. Full-page caching and correctly configured OPcache often remove the most repeated work, while theme, plugin, image, database, and worker settings determine how quickly the requests that still need PHP can complete.

1. Establish a baseline before changing anything
Ubuntu’s performance guidance puts the principle plainly: “To tune you need to know your system and workload.” A server with idle CPU can still deliver a slow page if requests are waiting on PHP-FPM workers, a database query, disk I/O, a remote API, or a cache miss. Record evidence for both an anonymous visitor and a logged-in or otherwise dynamic request before selecting a fix.
Measure the user-visible request
Use the same URL, client location, protocol, and test conditions each time. Capture at least:

- Response headers, including cache status and
Cache-Control. - Separate results for anonymous pages, logged-in pages, search, forms, checkout, and other personalized paths.
A simple header check can confirm what the server is returning:
curl -I https://your-domain.example/
For meaningful comparisons, run several requests rather than relying on one sample. Warm the cache deliberately when measuring a hit, and clear or bypass it deliberately when measuring a miss. Do not compare a cold request from one configuration with a warm request from another.

Measure each server layer
While a test is running, observe the resources that can constrain it:
- CPU: sustained saturation, high load relative to available cores, or a single busy process.
- Memory: available memory, swap activity, and whether the kernel is reclaiming aggressively.
- Storage: latency, queue depth, and read/write pressure rather than only total disk space.
- PHP-FPM: active workers, queued requests, worker recycling, request duration, and memory per worker.
- Database: query latency, slow queries, connection pressure, buffer-pool pressure, and storage waits.
- Cache: hit and miss counts, object-cache behavior, cache size, and purge events.
- Logs: web-server, PHP, database, and application errors that occur during the same interval.
Ubuntu profiling and monitoring tools can provide these measurements. The exact bottleneck matters more than a high-level utilization percentage: a low-CPU request waiting on a database lock is not fixed by adding CPU.
Define a target and a rollback
Write down the metric you are trying to improve, such as cached TTFB, uncached checkout response time, or the 95th-percentile duration for a publishing workflow. Change one layer at a time, record the old setting, and keep a tested way to restore it. Ubuntu notes that a tunable can help one workload and hurt another, so a generic “optimal” value does not exist.
2. Keep Ubuntu and the WordPress stack supported
Performance work is harder to trust on obsolete software. Apply security and maintenance updates for Ubuntu, the web server, PHP, MySQL or MariaDB, WordPress core, themes, and plugins. Take a tested backup first, check extension and theme compatibility, and stage updates when the site is business-critical.
The Ubuntu WordPress tutorial documents the conventional Apache2, PHP, and MySQL arrangement and advises obtaining WordPress from WordPress.org rather than relying on the Ubuntu archive package. The important performance consequence is a maintainable, supported installation with a known document root and predictable service versions; it is not that one distribution package is automatically faster.

3. Choose Apache or NGINX from the workload, not reputation
Both Apache and NGINX can serve WordPress effectively. Apache is familiar and has a broad module ecosystem. NGINX serves static files directly and integrates naturally with PHP-FPM and FastCGI caching. Neither is universally the fastest choice: the result depends on your existing expertise, required modules, traffic pattern, cache design, and the proportion of anonymous versus dynamic requests.
| Decision axis | Apache | NGINX |
|---|---|---|
| Static-file handling | Capable, with configuration and modules that many WordPress administrators already know. | Designed to serve static assets efficiently and can keep this work out of PHP. |
| Configuration familiarity | Often easier for teams already using .htaccess and Apache modules. |
Uses centralized server configuration; per-directory rules must be translated rather than copied. |
| PHP integration | Can use PHP-FPM and proxy requests to it. | Uses PHP-FPM through FastCGI and exposes explicit cache bypass controls. |
| Reverse-proxy or FastCGI cache | Possible with a separate proxy or cache layer. | Built-in FastCGI caching can store rendered responses when rules are correct. |
| Operational observability | Use access/error logs and PHP-FPM metrics. | Use access/error logs, upstream timing fields, and PHP-FPM metrics. |
| Best deciding factor | Existing skills, modules, and a measured bottleneck. | Existing skills, static-heavy traffic, and a measured need for explicit FastCGI caching. |
Switching servers without proving that the current server is limiting the request adds migration risk without guaranteeing a gain. If PHP, the database, or an uncached plugin query dominates the response, changing the front end will not solve the cause.
4. Put caching in the correct layer
Caching is not one switch. Each layer removes a different kind of work, and each requires its own invalidation rules.

Set suitable Cache-Control or expiration behavior for versioned images, CSS, JavaScript, and fonts. Long-lived caching is safest when filenames or URLs change whenever the content changes; otherwise visitors can retain old files. Browser caching reduces repeat downloads and bandwidth, but it does not make the first uncached HTML request faster.
Full-page or reverse-proxy caching
A full-page cache stores the rendered HTML for an anonymous, cacheable request. A reverse proxy can answer from that stored response without invoking PHP or MySQL. Filesystem page caching is a slower fallback, but it can still avoid repeating the complete WordPress execution path.
Define the cache key and bypass behavior explicitly. A typical NGINX FastCGI design uses a cache zone, then refuses to read or write cache for requests that can be personalized or mutate data.
- Bypass
POSTrequests and requests with query strings unless a specific query parameter is known to be cache-safe. - Bypass administration and authentication endpoints such as
/wp-admin/,/wp-login.php, and/wp-cron.php. - Handle feeds and sitemaps deliberately; cache them only for the period your publishing workflow can tolerate.
- Bypass cookies that identify logged-in users or commenters.
- Exclude search, preview, cart, checkout, account, and other personalized routes.
- Do not cache responses that set private cookies, return errors, or perform a state-changing action.
When a post, page, menu, widget, or relevant option changes, purge the affected URL and any dependent home, archive, feed, or sitemap responses. A fast stale page is still incorrect. Test purge behavior after publishing, updating, deleting, and changing a theme or plugin.

Object and database caching
An object cache can help when profiling shows repeated database work across requests or when persistent object-cache hits are valuable. Add it for an observed workload, not as a reflex. Document its eviction and invalidation behavior: stale options, user data, or query results can produce confusing application bugs. Avoid installing multiple plugins that each attempt object caching, page caching, minification, or asset rewriting.
Do not stack duplicate cache systems blindly
Two systems that both rewrite HTML, combine assets, or issue cache headers can conflict. A page may be cached at the browser, reverse proxy, and application plugin with different lifetimes, making a purge appear ineffective. Choose one owner for each responsibility, then verify the resulting headers and hit/miss path.
5. Enable and size OPcache
OPcache is a PHP extension that keeps precompiled PHP bytecode in shared memory. Without it, PHP repeatedly parses and compiles WordPress and plugin files. With it, PHP can reuse compiled scripts, reducing CPU work for requests that still execute WordPress.
Check the important capacity settings
Review the active PHP configuration for:
opcache.memory_consumption, the shared memory available for compiled scripts.opcache.interned_strings_buffer, which affects interned PHP strings.opcache.max_accelerated_files, the number of script entries OPcache can track.
Size these values for the actual WordPress core, theme, plugin, and custom-code footprint. A full cache causes evictions and recompilation; an oversized cache consumes memory that PHP-FPM or the database may need. Inspect hit rate, wasted memory, and restarts through your PHP diagnostics rather than copying a generic php.ini snippet.
Invalidate OPcache after code deployment
After changing PHP files, deploying a theme or plugin, or switching releases, invalidate OPcache or restart the relevant PHP-FPM service using your deployment procedure. Otherwise workers can continue executing old bytecode until the configured invalidation behavior notices the change. Test the deployment with a version marker or a known code-path change, and check the PHP error log if the new code is not active.
6. Tune PHP-FPM from measurements
PHP-FPM is the execution pool for dynamic WordPress requests. The right worker count depends on available memory, request duration, extensions, and how much work each request performs. More workers can increase concurrency until memory, CPU, or database connections become the new limit.
Look for worker saturation
Track active and idle workers, queueing, maximum-children warnings, request duration, and worker memory. A queue with idle CPU suggests a PHP-FPM capacity or slow-request issue; a fully busy CPU suggests that adding workers may only increase contention. Check whether long requests are caused by WordPress hooks, remote calls, database waits, or uploads before changing the pool.

Coordinate timeouts
PHP execution limits, PHP-FPM request termination, and the web-server or proxy timeout must be considered together. A lower web-server timeout can terminate a request before PHP reaches its own limit, while a high limit can allow stuck workers to accumulate. Set limits according to the slowest legitimate operation, then investigate anything that regularly approaches them.
After every pool change, recheck memory usage, database connection counts, error logs, and tail latency. A configuration that improves a synthetic burst can make real traffic less stable if it causes swapping or exhausts database connections.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Reduce WordPress application cost
Use a lightweight theme and remove unused code
WordPress guidance notes that a fast, lightweight theme performs more efficiently than a heavy, graphics-laden theme. Remove themes and plugins that are not needed, rather than merely deactivating an unmaintained collection indefinitely. Review plugins that add front-end scripts, scheduled tasks, remote requests, or database queries on every page.
Find expensive hooks and queries
Profile slow requests and identify the hook, shortcode, query, or external call responsible. Separate anonymous page-cache behavior from logged-in, search, checkout, preview, and other paths that must execute PHP. A plugin that is invisible on a cached home page may still dominate checkout latency or administration screens.
Optimize images and static assets
Resize images to the largest display size actually needed, use an efficient web format where supported, and avoid loading full-resolution originals in lists or mobile layouts. Combine this with browser caching for stable assets. Measure page weight and request count after each asset change; aggressive minification or combining can break scripts and may not help HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 delivery.
8. Treat the database as a measured dependency
WordPress documentation recommends InnoDB and describes MySQL or MariaDB optimization as specialized and workload-dependent. Start by finding slow queries, oversized tables, missing or ineffective indexes, connection pressure, buffer-pool misses, lock waits, and storage latency.
Checks to perform before changing variables
- Review the slow-query log during a representative workload.
- Identify tables growing because of revisions, logs, transients, sessions, or plugin data.
- Check query plans and index selectivity before adding an index.
- Measure buffer-pool pressure and disk latency rather than assuming more memory will help.
- Compare active connections with configured limits and the number of PHP-FPM workers.
- Back up the database and test schema or index changes on a staging copy when possible.
Do not paste an arbitrary my.cnf from another server. Ubuntu warns that database tuning varies by application and that changes can exceed file-descriptor or other resource limits. A larger buffer or connection limit is useful only when the workload and available memory support it.
Best Value
9. Avoid premature kernel and system tuning
Kernel parameters, file-descriptor limits, TCP settings, and scheduler choices can matter at unusual scale or under a proven resource constraint. They are not substitutes for fixing a cache miss, a slow query, or a saturated PHP pool. Change them only after measuring the relevant limit, document the previous value, and confirm that the new setting survives a controlled restart without introducing errors.
10. Validate every change and operate the result
Repeat the same baseline procedure after each change. Compare the same URLs, cache states, client conditions, and time window so that the result is attributable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Validation checklist
- Run a cold and warm request and compare TTFB and total time.
- Confirm cache headers and hit/miss behavior.
- Publish or edit content, then verify that the correct pages and dependent archives are purged.
- Log in and confirm that private pages are not served from an anonymous cache.
- Submit a form or other
POSTrequest and verify it bypasses page cache. - Check PHP-FPM health, worker queues, memory, and slow-request logs.
- Check database latency, slow queries, connection usage, and disk waits.
- Review web-server, PHP, database, and WordPress error logs.
- Record the configuration change, measured result, and rollback command or file.
Keep monitoring after deployment. Traffic mix, plugin updates, publishing volume, and database growth can move the bottleneck. A cache-heavy brochure site, a logged-in membership site, and a WooCommerce-style transactional site need different baselines and different cache exclusions.
11. Decide between self-management and managed hosting
Self-managed Ubuntu gives control over the web server, PHP-FPM, cache, database, updates, backups, and observability, but you own patching, incident response, migrations, and recovery. Managed WordPress hosting can be a better fit when the owner cannot reliably perform those tasks.
| Consideration | Self-managed Ubuntu | Managed WordPress service |
|---|---|---|
| Administration | You choose and maintain the stack, updates, hardening, and monitoring. | The provider typically handles a defined portion of platform maintenance. |
| Caching | You design page, object, opcode, and browser-cache rules and purge behavior. | Cache implementation is constrained by the provider’s platform and controls. |
| Backups and recovery | You must test backup restoration and maintain off-server copies. | Backup scope, retention, and restoration support depend on the contract. |
| Performance control | Fine-grained access to NGINX or Apache, PHP-FPM, database, and OS settings. | Less low-level control, with platform defaults and support boundaries. |
| Migration and geography | You plan migrations, regions, DNS, and rollback yourself. | Migration assistance and available locations vary by service. |
| Total cost | Lower service fees can mean higher value for your time and operational responsibility. | Higher recurring cost may buy support and reduced administrative work. |
Choose based on the time and skill available to operate the site, not on a claim that one hosting model is inherently faster. Whichever model you use, demand access to meaningful metrics, clear cache-purge behavior, tested backups, and a documented recovery path.
What a fast Ubuntu WordPress stack actually looks like
A practical architecture is layered: a supported Ubuntu installation; either Apache or NGINX chosen for the workload; PHP-FPM with measured worker limits; OPcache sized to the codebase; a full-page cache for anonymous requests; browser caching for versioned static assets; a measured object cache only where it helps; and an InnoDB-backed MySQL or MariaDB database monitored for slow queries and storage pressure.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The sequence matters more than any individual setting: baseline the request, identify the limiting layer, change one thing, purge or restart only what the change requires, and re-measure. That process prevents a fast cache from hiding broken private-page rules, prevents an oversized PHP pool from exhausting memory, and prevents database or kernel changes from being copied without evidence.
