How to Optimize Windows and Graphics Settings for 4K Gaming

A hardware-aware Windows 11 guide to smoother 4K gaming: select the right GPU, configure HDR safely, choose between render scaling and upscaling, and tune demanding graphics settings without relying on a universal preset.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable way to optimize 4K gaming is to establish a measured baseline, make Windows use the intended GPU and display mode, then tune the game’s render resolution and quality settings one change at a time. A 4K monitor does not guarantee a particular frame rate: performance depends on the GPU, processor, game engine, refresh rate, HDR capability, and the image-quality compromises you accept.

Use the procedure below to get a clean starting point on Windows 11, understand when HDR and upscaling apply, and diagnose common display-mode problems without relying on a universal preset.

What “optimized 4K gaming” actually means

4K output is normally 3,840 × 2,160 pixels. The game may render at that resolution, or it may render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct the image to a 4K output. Those are different workloads. Native 4K usually gives the clearest fine detail but requires substantially more GPU work; render scaling and upscaling can increase frame rate while introducing softer detail, shimmering or other artifacts.

There is no single best 4K configuration for every PC. A 60 Hz display has a different target from a 144 Hz display, and a demanding ray-traced game needs different compromises from a competitive title. Treat the following settings as a controlled starting process rather than a promise of a particular FPS increase.

  • Target: choose a frame-rate goal that matches your display and the game. Consistent frame pacing is usually preferable to a high but unstable counter.
  • Image priority: decide whether native detail, HDR appearance or higher frame rate matters most for the game you are playing.
  • Repeatability: compare changes in the same scene, replay, built-in benchmark or save position.
  • Scope: change Windows settings for compatibility and presentation, and use in-game controls for most image-quality decisions.

Prepare a baseline before changing anything

Record the current configuration

Write down the game’s output resolution, refresh rate, graphics preset, render scale, HDR state and upscaler mode. Also note whether the game is exclusive fullscreen, borderless or windowed. Capture an FPS reading and, if available, a frame-time graph in a repeatable scene. This gives you a reference when a change looks better but performs worse, or vice versa.

Confirm the display path

In Windows, select the intended monitor under Settings > System > Display. Confirm that Windows is set to the monitor’s intended resolution and refresh rate. Then check the game’s own Display or Graphics page; some games keep a separate refresh-rate selection. A 4K panel can run at a lower refresh rate than its advertised maximum if the connection, port, cable or Windows setting does not support the desired mode.

Do not assume that a 4K label means the display supports HDR. Open the Windows HDR controls for the selected display and check the listed capabilities before enabling HDR.

Set the correct GPU in Windows 11

On a desktop or laptop with more than one GPU, Windows can assign a game to a lower-power integrated processor instead of the discrete or high-performance GPU. Windows 11 provides a per-app preference so you can correct that without changing every application.

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Find the game in the app list. If it is not listed, use the option to browse for its executable file.
  3. Select the game and open Options.
  4. Choose High performance when the game should use the discrete/high-performance GPU.
  5. Select Save, then completely close and restart the game.

The preference is per app. A single-GPU desktop does not need this change, and assigning every program to the high-performance GPU can increase power use on a laptop. If the game still uses the wrong adapter, verify the game’s own renderer selection and the driver installation before changing unrelated Windows settings.

Test Windows 11 optimizations for windowed games

Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft describes it as a presentation-path improvement for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed modes. It can reduce frame latency and allow features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays.

  2. Turn on Optimizations for windowed games.
  3. Restart the affected game.

This is not a blanket optimization for every title. It does not apply to all graphics APIs, and it is not a replacement for exclusive fullscreen when a particular game performs or behaves better there. Auto HDR can turn the optimization on automatically, according to Microsoft. If a game’s borderless mode develops flicker, incorrect HDR or input-latency issues, turn the feature off for that test and compare the same scene.

Enable HDR only when the complete setup supports it

Check the monitor, connection and Windows capability report

HDR requires a compatible display and a PC/display connection that can carry the selected resolution, refresh rate and HDR signal. In Settings > System > Display, select the HDR-capable display and open its HDR controls. Windows shows capability information that can help distinguish an HDR-capable panel from a 4K panel that only accepts SDR.

Turn on HDR and Auto HDR

  1. Select the intended display in Windows Display settings.
  2. Enable Use HDR.
  3. Enable Auto HDR if you want Windows to adapt supported older SDR games for the HDR display.
  4. Launch the game and adjust its own HDR calibration controls, if present.

Auto HDR expands the color range and brightness of supported older SDR games. It is a display and image-quality feature, not a guaranteed performance improvement. HDR can look different from one panel to another, so use the monitor’s picture mode and Windows’ SDR/HDR brightness balance controls rather than copying one universal slider value.

Laptop power behavior

Windows may disable HDR on battery to conserve power. Microsoft warns that allowing HDR while on battery reduces battery life. For a laptop, check the power state before diagnosing a change in HDR appearance or availability; connect AC power when testing a consistent gaming configuration.

When HDMI HDR does not work as expected

If the display supports HDR over DisplayPort but the HDMI connection does not provide the desired mode, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance suggests trying DisplayPort. First verify that both the PC and display have the required ports and specifications. If HDMI is the only available option, the same guidance lists reducing the refresh rate as one possible troubleshooting step.

A DisplayPort cable is therefore a conditional connection fix, not an FPS upgrade. Changing cables cannot increase the GPU’s rendering performance by itself.

Choose output resolution, render resolution and refresh rate

Keep output and render resolution separate

Set the game’s output to the display’s intended resolution when possible, then look for a separate Render resolution, Resolution scale or upscaling control. Some games expose only one resolution selector. Microsoft notes that most games supporting fullscreen or exclusive fullscreen let you change render resolution in their own settings.

Lowering render resolution reduces the number of pixels the GPU must shade and can raise frame rate, but it also reduces fine detail. A 90% scale is not a universal recommendation; the visible result depends on the game’s reconstruction method, anti-aliasing and motion. Change it in small steps and inspect foliage, thin geometry, text and distant objects for softness or shimmer.

Match the refresh-rate goal

Choose a refresh rate that the system can sustain in the game you actually play. If frame rate frequently falls below the display’s refresh range, reducing an expensive quality setting or using a suitable upscaler can produce steadier motion than leaving every option at its highest value. Do not raise the refresh-rate setting in Windows and assume the game can render at that rate.

Use an in-game upscaler before a driver-level override

When a game provides a supported upscaler, test its quality presets in that game. AMD describes FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) as reconstructing an image from lower-resolution frames. Game-integrated implementations can use title-specific motion data and optimizations, so AMD recommends the integrated option over Radeon Super Resolution when the game supports FSR.

How to evaluate an upscaler

  1. Leave the output resolution at the display’s intended resolution.
  2. Select the game’s upscaler and start with its highest-quality mode.
  3. Compare the same scene with the upscaler disabled and enabled.
  4. Check moving foliage, particle effects, hair, wires, distant signage and camera pans for artifacts.
  5. Record the frame rate and frame-time behavior, then test a lower-quality preset only if you still need more performance.

Upscaling is a per-game choice. A mode that looks clean in one engine may produce ghosting or shimmering in another, so do not transfer a preset blindly between titles.

Radeon Super Resolution

Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) is AMD’s driver-level spatial upscaler. AMD says it activates when the game is set below the monitor’s native resolution, requires supported AMD hardware and software, and works in exclusive or borderless fullscreen modes. AMD recommends using FSR inside games that provide it, because the game-integrated path can be better optimized.

Windows Automatic Super Resolution

Windows Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is separate from both game-integrated upscalers and RSR. Microsoft limits it to eligible devices and supported games. Current requirements include Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, supported processor and device families, current graphics and neural-processor drivers, and compatible resolutions. Hardware eligibility can change as Microsoft and device vendors add support.

Auto SR currently does not support HDR content. If you want HDR in a game, Microsoft’s guidance says to turn Auto SR off for that game. This makes Auto SR unsuitable for a configuration whose priority is simultaneous HDR and automatic super resolution.

Adjust demanding graphics options in a controlled order

After Windows and display settings are correct, use the game’s own Graphics menu. Lower only one setting at a time and repeat the same scene. This identifies which compromise is buying the frame rate you need instead of leaving you with an unexplained low-quality preset.

Setting or control First question to ask Typical trade-off Where to change it
Output resolution Is the display receiving its intended 4K mode? Changing it alters output sharpness and GPU workload. Game Display/Graphics menu; verify in Windows.
Render resolution or scale Can the game render below 4K while retaining a 4K output? Lower internal resolution can raise FPS but soften detail. Game Graphics menu.
Upscaler quality Does the title provide an integrated reconstruction method? Higher quality generally preserves more detail; lower quality gives the GPU less work. Game Graphics menu.
Anti-aliasing Are edges visibly jagged after other changes? Higher anti-aliasing can improve image quality at an FPS cost. Usually the game; avoid global driver overrides without a specific reason.
Shadows, volumetrics and reflections Which effect is consuming the most GPU time? Reducing expensive effects can improve performance while preserving output resolution. Game Graphics menu.
Texture quality Does the GPU have enough video memory? Lowering textures can reduce memory pressure but makes surfaces less detailed. Game Graphics menu.
HDR/Auto HDR Does the display and connection support HDR? Can improve brightness and color range; does not guarantee higher FPS. Windows Display settings and, where available, the game.

AMD’s driver guidance treats default driver settings as a reasonable starting point for most users. Prefer game-level controls first, and use a global driver override only when you have a defined compatibility or image-quality reason.

A complete tuning sequence

  1. Set a target. Choose the frame rate and image-quality priority appropriate for the display and game.
  2. Record the baseline. Note resolution, refresh rate, graphics preset, render scale, HDR and upscaling state.
  3. Verify Windows display mode. Select the correct monitor and intended resolution and refresh rate.
  4. Assign the GPU. On a multi-GPU system, choose High performance for the game in Settings > System > Display > Graphics, save and restart.
  5. Test windowed optimization. If the title is a compatible DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 game in windowed or borderless mode, enable Optimizations for windowed games and restart.
  6. Configure HDR. Enable Use HDR and, if desired, Auto HDR only after confirming display support. Disable Auto SR when HDR is required.
  7. Confirm the game output. Set the intended output resolution and refresh rate in the game.
  8. Test the integrated upscaler. Start at its highest-quality mode and compare a repeatable scene.
  9. Reduce expensive settings. Adjust shadows, volumetrics, reflections, anti-aliasing or other demanding options in measured steps.
  10. Keep the winning configuration. Revert any change that worsens image quality without meeting the frame-rate target.

Borderless mode has poor latency or inconsistent behavior

Confirm that the game uses DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 and that it is actually running windowed or borderless. Test Windows 11’s windowed-game optimization with a restart. Compare against exclusive fullscreen in the same scene; the feature is not intended for every API or mode.

HDR is missing or looks wrong

  • Check that the selected display is HDR-capable rather than merely 4K.
  • Confirm the connection supports the chosen resolution, refresh rate and HDR signal.
  • If HDMI fails while DisplayPort HDR is supported by both devices, test DisplayPort.
  • If HDMI is the only option, test a lower refresh rate as Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance suggests.
  • On a laptop, connect AC power and check whether Windows disabled HDR on battery.
  • Adjust the monitor’s picture controls and Windows SDR/HDR balance instead of copying a fixed value.

Auto SR and HDR will not work together

This is an announced feature limitation, not necessarily a fault with the game. Windows Auto SR currently does not support HDR content. Turn Auto SR off when HDR is the priority, then use the game’s own supported upscaler if one is available.

Frame rate remains below target

Verify that the GPU assignment, output mode and refresh rate are correct before lowering image quality. Then test render scale or a supported upscaler, followed by the game’s most expensive effects. Compare frame time in a repeatable scene; a lower but steadier rate can feel better than a fluctuating peak.

The image is softer or shows shimmering after upscaling

Return to the highest-quality upscaler preset or native render resolution and inspect motion-heavy details. If the artifact remains, disable the upscaler for that title and lower a different graphics option instead. Reconstruction quality is engine-specific, so a setting that works in one game may not be suitable in another.

What not to assume about 4K optimization

  • A 4K monitor is not automatically HDR-capable.
  • HDR and Auto HDR change presentation, not guaranteed performance.
  • A DisplayPort cable can solve a conditional HDR connection problem; it does not create extra GPU performance.
  • Auto SR is not available on every Windows 11 gaming PC and has current hardware, driver, game and resolution requirements.
  • RSR is an AMD feature with specific hardware, software and display-mode requirements.
  • There is no evidence-based universal “ultra 4K” preset that applies across GPUs and games.
  • Global driver overrides are not a substitute for the game’s own graphics controls.

How to compare two settings fairly

Use the same save point or benchmark, camera position, weather and time-of-day conditions. Change one variable, allow the scene to settle, and record both frame rate and visible image quality. Compare motion as well as a still screenshot: ghosting, shimmer and dropped frames often appear only while moving. Keep a short note of each test so you can return to the last configuration that met your target.

When comparing upscalers or render scales, judge at the display’s normal viewing distance. Zoomed screenshots can exaggerate small differences that are invisible during play, while a moving camera can reveal artifacts that a still image hides.

Bottom line for a smooth, clear 4K setup

Start in Windows 11 by selecting the correct high-performance GPU, verifying the monitor’s real resolution and refresh rate, and testing windowed-game optimization only when the game and mode qualify. Enable HDR only after confirming display and connection support, and remember that Auto SR currently conflicts with HDR. In the game, preserve the 4K output, then use render scaling, an integrated upscaler and carefully chosen quality reductions to reach your frame-rate target. Measure every change in the same scene; the best configuration is the one that delivers stable motion and acceptable image quality on your particular hardware.
