Google says the usual SEO fundamentals apply: there are no extra technical requirements or special AI markup. Inclusion is never guaranteed, so measure search visibility alongside the visits and outcomes that matter to your site.
What Google requires for AI Overviews
Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be considered for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Its guidance adds no special technical threshold: Google Search Central says there are “no additional technical requirements.” That is an eligibility baseline, not a promise that Google will crawl, index or show a page. Google explicitly cautions that “indexing and serving isn’t guaranteed.”

That makes the sensible goal broader than winning a citation: publish pages that genuinely answer a need, ensure Google can access them, and retain a sound organic Search strategy whether or not an AI Overview appears.

Make the page worth finding
Google’s guidance favors helpful, reliable, people-first content. Give readers something beyond a rearrangement of material they can find everywhere else: original reporting, substantiated first-hand experience, useful comparisons, examples, expertise or a clear point of view. Support factual claims with credible evidence and make the page complete enough to solve the reader’s actual problem.
#1 Best Overall
Do not multiply thin pages to target minor variations of the same question. A focused, well-supported page is a stronger reader resource than several near-duplicates that add no meaningful value. Google’s helpful-content guidance is useful for reviewing whether a page serves people rather than merely targeting Search.
Work through this practical optimization checklist
1. Check crawl access and Search eligibility
- Confirm that robots.txt, hosting, or CDN rules are not blocking Google from accessing important pages or resources.
- Use Search Console to investigate whether the page is indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet.
- Link important pages from relevant parts of your site so users and crawlers can discover them.
- Keep essential information available as text, rather than relying only on images or other formats that may not communicate the content accessibly.
These steps support ordinary Search access; they do not guarantee an AI Overview appearance.

2. Improve usefulness, evidence and presentation
- Answer the reader’s need accurately and directly, then supply the context and detail necessary to act on the answer.
- Add original expertise, reporting, examples or comparisons only where you can substantiate them.
- Use relevant, high-quality images or video when they help explain the subject or serve the reader.
- Make sourcing and authorship clear where they help readers assess the information.
3. Keep technical signals clear and consistent
- Use descriptive headings, sensible page organization, internal links and a mobile-friendly experience.
- Ensure important page information is rendered in a way users and Google can access.
- Keep structured data accurate and consistent with what is visibly present on the page. It can support eligibility for applicable ordinary rich results, but it is not a special key to AI Overviews.
Google says publishers do not need new machine-readable or AI text files, special markup, content chunking, rewritten text for AI systems, or artificial mentions to appear in these features. Its AI-features documentation specifically says there is no need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup for inclusion. Do not spend time on unsupported “AI SEO” tactics at the expense of accessibility or better content.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Use generative AI with editorial review
Generative AI may assist with research or outlining, but it does not verify its own output. Google warns that publishing many generated pages without added user value can fall under its scaled-content-abuse policy. Fact-check claims, review metadata and structured data, and ensure an editor adds real value before publishing. Fluent wording is not evidence.

Measure visibility and business results
Google counts traffic from AI features within overall Search traffic in Search Console’s Web search type. Google also directs site owners to its Generative AI performance report in its AI-features guidance. Review clicks and impressions over meaningful time periods, and segment by query or page when that helps explain what changed.
Clicks are not the whole outcome. Compare search visits with the measures that reflect your goals—such as signups, purchases, qualified leads or engagement—in your analytics platform. Google has said that visitors who click from AI Overview result pages are more likely to spend more time on a site, but it has not supplied a universal numerical effect size for that observation. Treat it as a qualitative statement, not a traffic forecast or guarantee.

A drop in organic visits does not by itself show that AI Overviews caused it. Check the affected pages and queries in Search Console, then look for changes in impressions, position, indexing or technical access. Also investigate security issues, manual actions, recent migrations and whether demand for those searches has shifted.
- Find the scope: In Search Console’s Performance report, compare the affected dates and identify whether losses cluster around particular pages, queries or sections.
- Separate visibility from demand: Review impressions and positions alongside clicks. Use Google Trends to see whether interest in the affected topics changed more broadly.
- Check site health: Investigate indexing and crawl issues, security problems, manual actions and migration history that could affect the pages.
- Choose a proportionate response: Address confirmed technical or content problems. For widespread, substantial losses, review the site’s overall helpfulness and reliability rather than making speculative edits to every page.
Google notes that small position fluctuations can recover without radical changes, and that changes to a site may take weeks or months to show an effect without guaranteeing a visible result. Its traffic-drop troubleshooting guide provides a systematic way to investigate causes instead of attributing every decline to an AI feature.
Quick Recap
Best Value
What to prioritize—and what to ignore
| Prioritize | Do not treat as an AI Overview shortcut |
|---|---|
| Original, useful content with evidence and clear reader value | Mass-producing commodity paraphrases or near-duplicate pages |
| Crawlable, indexable pages that qualify for Search snippets | Assuming eligibility guarantees crawling, ranking or inclusion |
| Accessible text, internal links, sound page experience and accurate structured data | Special AI schema, AI text files, content chunking or rewritten text for AI systems |
| Search Console data paired with conversions and engagement | Unverified claims that a particular tactic guarantees citations or traffic |
