Measure completed outputs, retries, turnaround and operations effort against On-Demand and AWS Elemental MediaConvert using your own files and settings.
When Spot makes sense for video transcoding
Spot is worth testing when jobs can wait in a queue, be retried, or resume from checkpoints without breaking a delivery deadline. AWS Batch recommends jobs of 30 minutes or less, or longer jobs that can resume from a checkpoint, as patterns suited to Spot. These are practical recommendations, not technical limits or guarantees against interruption. AWS advises against jobs lasting an hour or more when interruptions cannot be tolerated. AWS Batch Spot best practices and AWS Batch Spot versus On-Demand guidance.

AWS advertises Spot savings of up to 90% compared with On-Demand. That is an AWS-stated maximum, not a typical result or a forecast for a particular transcoding pipeline. Actual Spot prices and capacity vary, and the cost of redoing interrupted work can erase some or all of the compute-rate difference. AWS EC2 Spot best practices.

Use Spot when interruption is recoverable
- Jobs are divided into short, independently schedulable units, or long jobs can checkpoint.
- Inputs, job state and completed outputs survive the loss of a worker, for example by residing in S3.
- The queue can absorb a delay caused by retries or a temporary lack of Spot capacity.
- Re-running a job is safe and does not create corrupt, duplicated or misleading outputs.
Prefer another capacity strategy when timing is critical
If an encode cannot tolerate interruption and missing its deadline is more expensive than the potential compute saving, evaluate On-Demand or a Spot-first design with an On-Demand fallback. AWS Batch documents both approaches; their cost and deadline behavior depend on queue configuration, capacity availability and your workload, so validate them before relying on the fallback.

Calculate cost per successfully completed output
Compare the same representative workload on Spot, On-Demand and, where appropriate, MediaConvert. Do not compare only hourly EC2 rates. A useful measure is the total cost of workers and related processing divided by the number of successfully completed outputs. Include time and operational effort separately so a cheaper compute bill does not hide a slower or harder-to-run pipeline.
Build a representative test set
- Include the codecs, resolutions, frame rates, source lengths and output ladders you actually process.
- Use the same encode settings and output requirements for each option.
- Run in the Region and capacity pools you intend to use; do not assume one instance family or Spot pool is universally cheapest.
- Record elapsed time, successful outputs, retries, interrupted work, and the compute and service charges incurred.
Compare the outcomes
| Option | Evaluate it against | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| EC2 Spot with AWS Batch or an EC2 fleet | Cost per completed output, retry and checkpoint behavior, capacity flexibility, and turnaround | Potentially lower compute rates than On-Demand, balanced against reclamation and capacity uncertainty. |
| EC2 On-Demand | Interruption cost, delivery deadlines, and capacity needs | Avoids Spot reclamation risk for the instance, but EC2’s hourly price is static and generally higher than Spot. |
| AWS Elemental MediaConvert | Required features and outputs, normalized output minutes, tiers, volume, and infrastructure effort | Managed per-output-minute charges use feature multipliers; the total cannot be fairly compared with EC2 hourly rates alone. |
MediaConvert offers Basic and Professional tiers and charges by normalized output minutes, with feature-dependent multipliers and tiers. Its total depends on output settings and volume. Compare current pricing for your Region and configuration with the full cost of running and operating your EC2 workflow. AWS’s VOD cost example is configuration-specific and depends on inputs such as source size and output count; it is not a general price quote. MediaConvert pricing · AWS VOD cost example.

Design transcoding jobs to survive Spot interruptions
AWS describes the difference between On-Demand and Spot this way: “The only difference between On-Demand Instances and Spot Instances is that Spot Instances can be interrupted by Amazon EC2, with two minutes of notice, if Amazon EC2 needs to reclaim the capacity.” AWS also warns that interruption notices may not arrive before every interruption. Build recovery around durable work and retries, not around always receiving time to shut down gracefully. AWS Spot best practices · Prepare for Spot interruptions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep workers replaceable
- Put source media and completed outputs in durable storage, such as S3, rather than relying on a worker’s local disk.
- Represent work as queue messages or independently schedulable jobs, with state that remains available if a worker disappears.
- Use short jobs where possible. For longer jobs, checkpoint if the encoder or workflow supports it; otherwise plan for the possibility that an interruption means restarting that unit.
- Make retries idempotent: a repeat run should safely replace or verify an incomplete output rather than publish a partial file as complete.
Handle warnings and retries
Listen for rebalance recommendations and interruption notices to stop taking new work and save progress when there is time, but ensure the workflow still recovers when no notice arrives. For AWS Batch, AWS recommends one to three automated retries as a starting point and documents support for up to ten. Choose a retry count based on the cost and duration of your jobs, and monitor repeated failures so a persistent encoding or input error does not cycle indefinitely. AWS Batch Spot best practices.

Choose instance pools and allocation strategy
Do not tie a flexible workload to one instance type and one Availability Zone solely because that pool showed a low price. Allow compatible instance sizes and families, and use multiple Availability Zones where your architecture permits. AWS’s general Spot guidance suggests flexibility across at least ten instance types where practical; this is a guideline, not a requirement for every workload. Benchmark candidate pools for codec performance and price/performance rather than assuming a family is best.
Match allocation to the cost of restarting work
For EC2 Fleet, AWS recommends price-capacity-optimized for most Spot workloads. It considers both price and capacity. AWS identifies capacity-optimized as a possible fit when restart costs are high, including media rendering. Avoid optimizing only for the lowest observed price if the pool is scarce or the cost of repeating work is significant. EC2 Fleet allocation strategies.

Make the capacity decision against a service objective, not just an hourly rate. If work can wait or retry without breaching its deadline, Spot may be a reasonable first choice. If a queue is time-sensitive, compare an On-Demand baseline with a Spot-first queue that can fall back to On-Demand. Before enabling fallback, test what happens during a capacity shortage: a fallback can protect turnaround but may raise spend, so set a budget and verify the queue’s behavior under the conditions you expect.

Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Jobs restart from the beginning after a worker disappears | Work is too large to retry cheaply or progress is stored only on the worker | Split work into shorter units, checkpoint where supported, and store state and outputs durably. |
| Workers are not available from the preferred pool | Spot capacity varies by instance type and Availability Zone | Broaden compatible instance types and usable Availability Zones; evaluate an allocation strategy that weighs capacity as well as price. |
| A retry produces a partial, duplicate or conflicting output | The job is not idempotent or incomplete files are treated as finished | Write to a temporary or unique destination, verify completion, and publish or replace the final output only after success. |
| Spot savings disappear in the completed-output calculation | Interrupted work, retries or longer turnaround add substantial cost | Measure the full cost per successful output on representative media and compare with On-Demand and MediaConvert. |
| A deadline is missed during a capacity shortage | The queue has no tested capacity fallback or the workload cannot tolerate delay | Test a Spot-first/On-Demand fallback or choose On-Demand for the deadline-critical portion; validate cost behavior in advance. |
